seems absurdly dramatic to think the election won't happen atm. no way he could corral the military and police force across the country to back him in creating a dictatorship. seems extremely far fetched. power structures are way too diverse, with too many factions within them even if there is a small core that would like to see a general trumpo.

seems likely turnout might be even lower for dems than usual in battleground states with people, esp more vulnerable communities, being more scared to hit the polls if overt racial violence from nationalist groups and vigilantism continues to escalate between now and november. i cant imagine that fear affecting the MAGA crowd as much, perhaps even spurring them on but this is pure imaginative speculation. who the fuck knows.

If Biden loses with the country in this state, is that the greatest presidential election L of all time? Feels like he just has to be a warm body right now.
Depends on how much he loses by. If it's similar to Hillary or say, John Kerry in 2004, nah. If it looks like McGovern or Mondale, that's different.

I think Bush in 1992 keeps that title for our lifetimes still probably no matter what happens to Biden. He turned the highest approval rating ever into getting the shit kicked out of him by two trolls and a nobody Arkansas governor with sex scandals in an era when it mattered. 57% of the vote went against Clinton, but Bush was still demolished in the EV with Clinton winning the most states of any candidate even since. And Bush was the incumbent President who also had had eight years as Vice President under a commanding political force.

I mean he made quite possibly the worst possible statement one could make addressing what's going on today, so he's for sure gonna go over Hillary one way or another.

People have been saying that Biden will swing Pennsylvania but did you see those people in Fish Town tonight? We're never getting that demographic back ever. Just something to think about for the calculus.

This unrest may well be good for Trump.  Suburban lawn care and panera enthusiasts who think he’s embarrassing will find him less so after being reminded that The Blacks And Friends can get a little too uppity sometimes, like how people who voted for Obama twice started looking at him less favorably after Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Ferguson, etc.

Depends how low Trump's approval ratings get this summer. He's tracking at about the same as Bush did in the summer of 2004.  Bush had pretty intense vitriol aimed at him from 2004-2006 in wake of the fraudulent wars and Katrina.

I was going to post yesterday asking where all the Never Trumpers (Republican Branch) were hiding the past 2 months.  A wild George Will has appeared!

Quote
Longtime conservative commentator and columnist George Will says voters must do more than reject President Donald Trump in November. They need to vote against his Republican “enablers” too ― especially in the Senate.

tldr: a rule which makes it very, very, very hard to hold police liable in civil proceedings for violating people's constitutional rights.

You can google the phrase and there will be plenty good explanations on the first page of results.

I've shat on Booker a lot over the years but I fux with this. Alas can't help but come back to the fact that even if everything goes perfectly in November, there wouldn't be 60 votes to prevent a filibuster. Obligatory "fuck Beto and Stacy Abrams for not running for senate" comment.

If the democrats don’t go nuclear on the filibuster they’re dumber than shit. Republicans would do it in a split second if it was something they really wanted to get done.

I'm not even sure I support nuking the filibuster. If there was no filibuster, Obamacare wouldn't exist today and a lot of people (including a whole lot of children) wouldn't have health insurance. It would have been repealed, there would have been no "heroic" John McCain moment, etc. And given the current mental and ideological makeup of the republican party, I'm not particularly hip to risk a bad business cycle/recession sweeping President Tom Cotton into office one day wherein he shitcans every past progressive and semi progressive legislative victory imaginable.

There was a time when I would have said that a full repeal was unlikely/illogical but it's quite clear this has nothing to do with logic. It's pure spite politics, and they don't give a shit who gets hurt. Imagine hypothetically nuking the filibuster, enacting M4A, and then watching it get shit canned 4 years later...before it even goes into full effect. Nah I'm good...

I think the Dem agenda relies more on passing a bunch of stuff than the GOP agenda.

Potential Dem legislation: health insurance (public option, drug prices, etc.), family leave, pre-K, student loans, voting access, campaign finance, taxes, bankruptcy, labor, immigration, housing, qualified immunity, gun control. Even if the Senate Parliamentarian gives you a ton of leeway on reconciliation, that still gets you one bite at the apple each year.

The GOP wants to lower taxes on rich people and corporations and pack the courts. So far they've gotten cold feet on privatizing SS, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. It's possible without a filibuster that eventually they pass some shitty stuff on labor, abortion, immigration, law enforcement. ALEC's gotten a lot of stuff through state legislatures so it's not out of the question. But Dubya got bills through by tacking to the center and Trump's produced almost nothing. On balance the Dems should nuke the filibuster and take their chances.

DeWine, a Greene County Republican, proposed creating a centralized state-level board to regulate police, just as the state licenses teachers, nurses, and other professions.

“It should probably, I think, in my opinion, be treated as a profession – which means that the ability to see if someone has done something if they should lose that license...is probably a way that we should look at this.”

The governor also said he wants to ensure that police officers who are fired from one department aren’t able to join another police department.

Other proposals DeWine said he would present to state lawmakers include:

Bolstering police training, particularly regarding overcoming implicit bias, de-escalation techniques, and working with those who have mental-health issues
Recruiting more people of color to serve as law-enforcement officers
Improving police transparency
Creating a list of best practices for all police departments in the state to follow
DeWine said he would unveil more details about these proposals on Thursday.

It’s a start, but not nearly enough. Hopefully this encourages other states to move forward with quick reforms. Sitting around and waiting on the federal government isn’t going to work.
