Ive never played a Far Cry game. Does this game scratch the same exploring itch as the Bethesda Fallouts?

Not at all. They're FPS games with a conventional open world structure, with minor unscripted systems on top to give you something to do as you roam. Pick a mission and go do the objective any way you see fit, fend off animals and random patrols on the way, basically. Addictive in their own way (I compulsively stealth cleared every outpost in FC3), but it's more of a list-ticking excercise than it is about making discoveries.

You're not going to find an NPC off the beaten path who gives you a cool quest for a unique weapon. Or even stashes of goodies, really. There is stuff to collect, but it's either money or crafting mats and all of it is clearly marked on your map so you can run down your shopping list. There may be hidden achievement fodder, but I don't remember.

If you want first-person exploration, I can recommend STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat. But then they're not quite Bethesda Fallout free-roam adventures, either. Much more linear than they seem.

The one add onto Rufus' explanation, and minor disagreement about is 2.

2 had some of those to where you could miss lots of them by doing just the given missions, but it was more because I think they scaled back the scope of the plot and just left them in the game more than intentionally designed to be discovered. IIRC, 2 was even supposed to have the ecosystem but all the animals are herbivores because they couldn't get the carnivores from killing off everything else and starving to death and yanked them completely out of the game. Really, a lot of parts that work in 2 that 3+ never improved upon or made actively worse are probably because they were working but unfinished in 2 and they just lopped off all the unfinished connecting parts to release it. One that really sticks out is how much the game explains to you the time system and its importance, and how much it doesn't actually matter. :lol

But as Rufus said, these are more big dumb open worlds that eventually direct you everywhere as part of a checklist more than they are open worlds with a mainline, a secondary sideline and then stuff peppered about that's world building or sorts that you come upon from exploring. It's closer to something like Borderlands's vision of an open world, where you can bypass all kinds of side shit, but it tells you that it's there. (To use a non-Ubisoft example!)

This game is a goddamned buggy mess. Just one example - I saved and logged out last night after I got the Leadership perk. When I logged in this morning I had somehow lost the perk. Missions were still completed, the 6 needed points were still spent, but I didn't have the perk anymore.

Also, as pretty as it is (and it is pretty, makes me want RDR2 even more), Montana is a fucking boring Far Cry setting.  There's nothing exotic about Montana no matter where you live in the world.  I'm already finding myself playing more out of purchase obligation than being actively engaged.

I love Far Cry 5 and its my favorite in the franchise, by far. Friendly AI, enemy AI, it becomes a magnificent clusterfuck that causes the best open world moments this gen. You use shovels as spears, you can command AI to drive or pilot anything, and you dont know what's gonna happen.

The setting is great and cohesive, I remember shit about the map, landmarks.

I was telling my AI partner to either move, attack, or follow me. That simplicity combined with what they and everything else does is fantastic.

If you mark a point on your map, and have your partner set to follow, hopping in anything as a passenger will make the AI drive or fly. I think.

With Liz and the helicopter in that clip I posted, I never told her to fly, the AI followed me using a helicopter that was next to them.  :lol

I was eventually directing her while I was grappled on. Same with telling her to attack the helicopter. I told her to attack the helicopter, fire arrows was an idea she had lol.

I've seen clips of AI partners bailing out as the pilot from helicopters and planes.

I'm really liking it so far. Some of the game design is a bit flakey tho (resistance bars per region are annoyingly low, and being forced into missions based on those bar checkpoints is annoying as well).

Setting feels great tho (I've never been to Montana), gunplay is good, and I really REALLY like the potential of the arcade mode. Plus, the DLC could be a lot of fun when it arrives.

Ubisoft would be my favorite big publisher this gen.

There are tailing missions and the combat system is more or less the same, except with classes of weapons to use. You have played it right?

Love hate relationship with FC5 but I enjoyed it enough to get the DLC and buy Assassins Creed Origins during the spring sale.

Pros:
Enjoyed all the sections of Montana. Jacobs region did feel a bit like FC4 with all the grappling.
Ammo switching between semi, burst and full auto.  While gun types are limited this helps change things up.
Constant enemies on the road. They are a cult who has taken over a section of Montana. You escaped from them and are slaughtering them. One would expect this. I see many complain about this but I think it was great. Plus getting on the roadways leads to craziness galore.
Hunting and fishing. I prefer to do it for the money.  Great way to infuse some cash when you are looking to buy "X." I was never a fan of the hunt animals to upgrade things. Using the skill points by finding magazines and unlocking challenges worked well for me.
Prepper Stashes. Loved each of the little puzzles to break into the stash. Easily my favorite new thing.
Music. Loved every bit of it. I could sit at the map screen forever.

and

Cons:
Story, especially the constant pulling you from the game. Just breaks what little story there is. We can capture you at any time but are not going to kill you.
Ending. I beat it pretty quick and did not have a clue as to what I would be getting into. The alternate ending is even worse.
Silent player. Kinda expected this when they went with a male and female option with customization.
The guy who sounds like an Indian but looks nothing like one that constantly yaps at you in major fishing sports. Fuck this guy. No I do not want to hear your story.
Weather. It does rain and snow in Montana. I think 3 had some weather but 4 did not.
Postgame. It lets you back into the world to finish stuff up, which based on the ending and some of the post game menu screens come off making you want to sent some hate mail to Ubisoft for such a half assed handling of this. Just revert back to before you started the final confrontation. Easy Peasy.  Nope, not for Ubisoft.

Thankfully I do not prioritize stories in video games, especially open word games. I did not look at any of the notes, once I clicked on them outside of the prepper stash notes. I skipped through every cut scene and have no clue what the first two Faith kidnappings were about since there was no action involved.

I'm at the final confrontation with Joseph. The only interesting area was Faith, and all her segments. I didnt bother completing all the outposts because theres no point. I just run in with my silenced AR and kill everyone without even trying.

The partners make the game stupid easy. Especially the woman with the attack helicopter.

Far Cry 3 is still the best one and they are trying their gosh darn hardest to make an interesting character like Vaas and falling flat every time.

The only partner I used is Boomer and only when I was hunting. They do make parts of the game too easy. The perk that gives you two specialists at one time is basically God Mode. Outposts were my favorite part of the past few games but they were all far too easy in 5. The majority of the Alarms were out in the open and easily sniped without being spotted. There was only one time I was not able to clear all the alarms w/o being spotted and that was due to a cougar rushing me when I was in stealth mode. Did not help that there were not any Fortresses equivalent to what was in FC4. Hoping we get to see some really good user created Outposts in the Arcade.
