It seems to me tantamount to calling someone a cunt in the street and expecting a constructive conversation out of it. Through appealing to class you are trying to foster mass solidarity. The key word here is 'mass'. It is the mass that have power not the minority. All indentity politics does is divide people in to competing interest groups. And so you have increasing fragmentation of the left coupled with a kind of rhetoric that is really counter-productive in getting the dominant group -- the one that you need to get any deep level change -- on your side.

The thing is, it is not like these people don't know it is counter-productive. If you use that type of rhetoric on any other group they would understand why some members of that group might take issue with it. If they understand why any other group might take issue with it, they understand why white people might take issue with it. I think the real reason they do it is because they think white people deserve it. Well, okay, but ultimately it will achieve nothing.

Maybe it is not about achieving change for them really but rather a form of therapy. Being part of something greater than yourself; to be part of what seems like a worthwhile cause is very attractive. Humans need a purpose.

No, they really don't. I'm sure you would love to support their "right" and see that it's enforced, if even with force, but they absolutely do not have a right to advocate for my extermination. And, let's be honest, the white supremacists who support Donald Trump are ethno-terrorists who envision a future where genocide of non-whites is accepted. Thankfully, we are still quite a few years from that point, though Trump is certainly doing all he can to accelerate the process.

There's a staggering lack of self awareness regarding this talking point and it's something a lot of people in your make assume. Unfortunately (or fortunately?) they do have a right to free speech so long as they aren't saying violent rhetoric (which constitutes as hate speech). What's funny is that this was often said on gaf, a site that regularly allowed users to say things like,"I think all white peoole are racist and I don't trust them" among other things, many of which were said by yours truly. But here's the thing, the same right that allows them to do their right wing shit is the same thing that allowed us to go ham on cacs at ye ol' neogaf: freedom of speech. And when I said freedom of speech, I do not mean within the confines of neogaf (which clearly didn't value free speech) but within the greater scope of the American freedom map. Essentially, unless you're willing to give up both, you shouldn't want one to be taken away. And for that reason, neither should be taken away. The only reasonable recourse is then to do battle, with words, as to why they are wrong and ignoring that, empathizing and trying to understand and what you can do to help.

The way this generation does not value freedom of speech is both shocking and frightening.

Are you seriously drawing a parallel between "I don't trust white people" and "maybe committing genocide against blacks isn't that big of a deal?" Richard Spencer actually voiced the latter. And I don't consider that "speech," as we normally define it. It's incendiary calls for violence that these "free speech" rallies are celebrating. The more you allow them to throw these rallies, the more you contribute to their ultimate goal - normalizing an explicit and unambiguous call to exterminate you and your kind. This is why I shook my head in disbelief at the idiots on GAF who mocked the low attendance at Richard Spencer's speech. He doesn't care about how many people show. His aim is much greater than that.

I did not draw that parallel. You did. You didn't mention Richard Spencer. How am I supposed to know you're referring to that bad haircut art gallery? Let's be honest. Richard Spencer's rhetoric is not being "normalized" and you should stop using that word. Richard Spencer was categorically met with oppositional force in Florida. He has the freedom to say what he wants, but it also allows us to oppose him. You say he's "normalizing" genocide against us, but he had a low turn out. Those people are a vast, vast minority to the point where the majority of the country - even conservatives - are against them.

So no, I'm not drawing a parallel. It's too hard to know what activists deem a nazi these days, so all I had to go on was a guess. I'm very open to free speech, because it's one of the many things Jews didn't have in Nazi Germany. They outright outlawed any way for there to be discourse.

Richard Spencer is not Malcolm X. He's a joke. Expose him as such. He's nothing.
