The liberal media created Trump and they are reaping the rewards. How some of these Social Studies Warrior idiots don't see this is astonishing. Middle american white folks aren't to blame for this, not sure why no one can see that.
Because it's a patently stupid idea; he lost the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes, how is it that all those non-Trump voters weren't affected by this mystical "Durr he was on TV so much, what else was I supposed to do, NOT vote for him" affect?
People are responsible for who they vote for; this is a far more nuanced topic than to just completely remove "blame" because the media covered Trump more. Someone can argue that he was over-covered and it didn't help things but I still think that's too simple of an analysis. WHY would basically only white Americans turn that coverage into votes? What is it about "over covering" a blow-hard who brags about grabbing pussies that affected these people?
I agree that there are multiple factors for why people voted for Trump. That is often the case. I am reminded however of an argument Brendan O'neill made about the pathologisation of people's views and opinions. So for example, having critical views of Islam can get you branded as an Islamophobe, i.e. you have an irrational fear of Muslims, you are mentally ill, etc. A high percentage of Trump voters had views critical of Islam. Now, the way some people on the Left treat people with views like this really isn't helpful. It is only going to create polarity. To a number of these people they don't see their views as racist yet they are being spoken of as if they're mentally and morally deficient in some way. That is only going to push people away. What's more, it gives the impression the Left is incapable of grappling with complex issues.
The thing is, in the words of Douglas Murray, an absence on one side creates something on the other. If one side says terrorism has nothing to do with Islam, you will create a movement that says, "Wait a minute! it has everything to do with Islam". The Obama administration chose not to brand Islamic Terrorism as 'Islamic' for example. Choosing not to name the issue can create contray forces. In other words, the public hear that it has nothing to do with Islam or notice the failure to mention Islam and are like, "what do you mean it has nothing to do with Islam. Why don't you mention it? We can see it with our own eyes". Then pops up Trump and he tells these same people it has everything to do with Islam. Islam is the problem. And of course there is more truth in what Trump was saying than what the Obama administration was saying. Thats not to say it's absolutely true, just that there is more truth in it. This is the danger.
You're right, there are multiple factors involved, but the Left's vilifying of the other side, of wholes swathes of people, and it's failure to address what are complex issues is definitely part of the reason in my mind.
