50 bucks here is just about a plate of Japanese style chicken and waffles and a cocktail and I get it like once a week.

Unless you live in Geneva, bullshit.

Here are some more NYC fine dining prices:

$27.95
Lobster, shrimp, clams, sea scallops and New Zealand mussels simmered in your choice of our marinara or green sauce served with saffron rice

$35.95
Three lobster tails, shrimp and scallops with penne in vodka sauce

$28.95
Jumbo shrimp stuffed with crabmeat, served with crisp Spanish style potatoes, saffron rice and fresh vegetables

$42.95
Surf and turf center-cut beef tenderloin and a 7 oz. lobster tail grilled over hardwood coals, served with crisp Spanish style potatoes and sauteed seasonal vegetables

$65.95 (for two)
A presentation of two of whole lobster, lobster tails, prawns, jumbo shrimp, king crab legs, clams, New Zealand mussels and scallops, served with crisp Spanish style potatoes and saffron rice

Where is this from? You keep posting very generic dishes with descriptions that read like they're from 1980's

It's from a restaurant in Newark, NJ.  lol

Fine dining is such a strange term any more. I'd reserve it for places like Canlis, The Herb Farm and French Laundry. Places that involve 4-5 hour dinners at $200-$300 per person. Everything else is just good food.

Man, you guys have to get married already. Gay-married, I suppose. Then your dating costs plummet.
Like last night my wife and I were like, "you wanna get something fancy for dinner tonight? It's Valentine's Day."

"You mean Arby's?"

"No, no, I mean real fancy – like Ruby Tuesdays."

"Oh yeah, that'd be nice."

Then we did it as a carry-out order so we didn't even have to tip 'em.

None of this 'hold on, doll – that lobster bichon frise is like $50 bucks. I ain't buying that for you unless you're puttin' out."
the wife and i got arby's for dinner last night cause i was too lazy to cook :mynicca

Boston's North End is date fucking central.

Yes.

This is where you show your provincialism.

You see high price and you assume high quality.

No, I think it's high quality cause I've eaten there and had my taste buds rocked. It's not that hard to grasp. :lol

Have I had cheaper meals that are better? Sure. But the conversation was about high-end Italian food.

Also, that restaurant is in the North End. :ufup

Let me guess, you run into the Red Lobster in times square because surely at those prices it's the best man can buy?

No?

Actually I don't think I've ever been to Red Lobster. :dunno Boston has too many great seafood places anyways.

In the Caribbean, we call marks like you fat Americans.

I'm most likely skinnier than you breh. :lol

Steak is literally cow with salt. Some recipes add garlic salt.

It's cheap as fuck to make. Have some perspective, please.

This is ignorant as all hell; steak is expensive and typically a loss leader at most restaurants who hope you pair it with apps and drinks.

It's pretty clear james is a cheapass know-it-all, breh. Don't expect much insight or experience here lol.

This place opened up a year or two ago. I believe it’s either the US expansion of some Japanese ramen empire, or it was started by some big Japanese ramen chef. Either way, it’s a Big Deal and you have to stand in line for hours still. I wanted to try it and figured it would have cooled down by now.

I still love it, although I partly go for the karaage most places have.

It is humorous that it's Japan's version of bar food.

Afuri is a ramen chain my wife really likes whenever we go to Tokyo. They specialize in yuzu shio broth ramen, so it's much lighter than your standard tonkotsu pork broth. In any event, it's good and no different than any other ramen place. Stand in line, place your order, pay less than $10 sit at the counter, eat your ramen and leave.

Afuri opened up their first US location in Portland in 2016, so we went down one weekend for some beer and ramen. This place was ridiculous. Super fancy, line out the door of people trying to be seen and the exact same ramen was like $18. WTF.

Alternatives? :dunno

Grain fed

What's the (qualitative) diff?

Flavor, marbling. Grass fed tends to have much less intra-muscular fat and a bolder, "beefier" flavor.

Ugh; "truffle butter/oil" is something I definitely don't dig.

I'm not a fan of it, but to top it off the last time I had anything "truffle" flavored I ended up with the flu that night and it tasted terrible on the way out.

I put truffle in quotes because my understanding is most truffle oil/butter dishes have little or no truffle in them.  I've had actual truffle before in dishes and liked it.

That's not true. Usually truffle butters are made with truffle paste that they buy from specialty purveyors. Truffle paste is chopped up black truffles packed in oil. Some restaurants that go through a lot of fresh truffles will chop up the scraps and make truffle butter like that, so nothing goes to waste.

Whatever the case may be, truffle butter does not belong in ramen

I have a hard time paying for a steak at a restaurant. I'd rather just make it at home.

We have Score 11 A5 Wagyu on the menu, doubt you would find it in the grocery store  :snob

There's a farm about 20 miles from me that raises and sells America Wagyu. Should I buy some?
