Still have to see it but it's quite remarkable how Miyamoto carried his: "Games shouldn't have a story" rule all the way to Hollywood and probably played a big role creating the biggest film of 2023.

I watched several bits of it. It was okay, thanks for the encouragement to give it a chance.

I’m probably the biggest Tobal fan here, and it’s stunning to think what an achievement this was in its day. The truly 3D (sidesteps in real depth, not reorientation like Tekken), game ran at 60fps (edit: spelling) non-interlaced if you had supported S-video, and then here was this whole roguelike quest mode. Amazing.

At my last job, the dev team discovered Tobal 2, and were proud of their skills. I came in without practice, played non-main and switched between all the characters each match, and still cleaned house across the team. One guy stopped my run, he’s a prodigy.

I love that game.

Tobal 2 was one of my first imports. Way back when me and school buddies pooled our money to get it. We had a dedicated paper clip to play imports on my PS1. Think I ended up with most of those CDs. A friend took my FF7 demo disc from Total 1, so call it even.

Tobal 2 is such a stunning looking game for the era, great music too. Tobal no 1 was a lot of fun, especially the dungeon crawl mode, so it's a shame the second game never came to the states. I did eventually import it, along with Internal Section (another fantastic Japan-only Squaresoft release).

Ahh, the days when Square was making amazing and creative non-RPGs along with some of the best RPGs ever. Nowadays SE can barely get the RPG part right
