I like how Earthbound did it. Not only were enemies visible, you could get a free attack if you snuck up on them and auto-win if you were strong enough.
Mario RPG does that if you jump on them/etc.

edit: actually i think many if not all of the Mario RPG's do this, not just the original...

I liked Paper Mario's system. It wasn't just braindead spreadsheets - you could do action-RPG-like things for perks and boosts, which kept battles feeling dynamic.

I imagine random encounters were originally borne from a technical constraint that caught on because tradition and didn't change for way too long, and will only be adhered to in future by misguided nostalgia fests.

Aeana from GAF would aggressively challenge this notion, but I think in general it bears somewhat true.

i get the dnd origin also, but jrpgs hardly conform to dnd rulesets otherwise. i also get that it allows devs to anticipate and design for a players character progression better if you have a random encounter system so you know at the least they'll be fighting an enemy every 20 steps. im fairly fine with it in older games. i still love BoF, Grandia, FF etc, but it feels very lazy nowadays.

i remember many parts of the first FF, even into the updated versions, where you can spend long periods wandering around the map trying to trigger the random encounters so you can level up enough to take on the next boss :lol

iirc the second game gives them out twice as often to try and prevent this

I like Octopath, even if I basically agree with all of Dunkey's complaints.

I mean how can you disagree? Random battles in 2XXX is fucking awful and JRPG developers need to look at Persona 3, 4, 5 and Final Fantasy 12 to see that having enemies on the board just makes for more engaging tactical play.

Random battles just don't bother me that much, unless the encounter rate is super-high [in Octopath it isn't, and you can get a passive skill that makes them even more infrequent]. And in a game that's so clearly inspired by 16-bit JRPGs, I'd expect them to be there anyway. :yeshrug

Also; Dragon Quest IX (and later instalments), Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Xenoblade. I can't think of a single jrpg where i wouldn't prefer if i could see enemies on map. Fuck random encounters.

I think random encounters are a design thing rather than a technical limitation (Dragon Slayer back in like 1984 had visible monsters). Like others said, it dictates game balance, it makes things a bit more 'shocking' when you never know what kind of enemy group will spawn (will it be a metal slime? :O), it works well in games where resource allocation is a big facet of gameplay, and it also fits if the designer wants to make tight corridor dungeons where dodging enemies might be more difficult. So yeah, usually more abstract, oldskool games. And I'm perfectly fine with it, provided the encounter rate and difficulty is balanced.

Can't think of any games with random encounters nowadays though (Atelier?), unless they're trying to be purposefully retro. Even DQ has moved away from them (though DQ9's take on visible encounters were terrible, you couldn't really avoid the enemies even if you tried).

I don't think the original Mario RPG did anything special for jumping on enemies, not even giving you first strike like in later games. If you have a Star you can blitz through enemies though.

Random battles were definitely a technological constraint that have been kept around due to tradition. Not too mention so few JRPG developers taking the time to balance encounter rates to an enjoyable level.

I liked Paper Mario's system. It wasn't just braindead spreadsheets - you could do action-RPG-like things for perks and boosts, which kept battles feeling dynamic.

There is definitely a fine balance on adding action elements to a JRPG, because you can make the already tedious random battles drag out even more by having the player press buttons even more often. Worst case you end up with a massive snore fest like Xenogears. High encounter rates, tough enemies, long combo input strings.

I was convinced of Lost Level's virtues a few years ago via Sixfortyfive on GAF (there's other, better posts they made, but I can't find them right now.) It's not as perfect as the original, but calling it just a map pack is a disservice. Accurate, but a disservice.

USA gets points for music and style, but I'd rather have platforming substance.

I never really minded random encounters and I'm not much a JRPG nut. It's very much whatever to me.

They don't bother me too much as long as I can successfully avoid them when I want to.

I remember in final fantasy II (American, so like 4 or 5 or whatever it really is) I first beat that game when I was maybe 11 and clocked through the whole game in maybe 24 hours.

The final Tower of Babel was hard as shit without ever stopping to level. I also never realized that you  could use Pegasus to avoid taking damage in that area with the poison floors so I just chugged cure potions every 20 steps.

I’m honestly surprised I ever beat it. A couple Years later I played it again and took my time and was like “fuck I didn’t know you can get meteo!”
