I admit I could be wrong, but from their documentary "How Not to Make a Movie":

IIRC Mike met Jay through various indie Wisconsin film fests when they were in college. Mike had some "pre-RLM" "brand" (for lack of a better term) which had some collaborations with Jay, but Jay also had his own "brand" he was making things under -- mostly really sick, gross-out, John Waters-type short films, which actually got some decent reviews in local papers (I remember, because I remember trying to see how I could watch Jay's early stuff and only found the reviews.) In fact I think right before they joined and created RLM, Mike and Jay had some kind of a falling out. (Looking further into it left me with a grimy feeling so I stopped.)

Everyone else came onto RLM wayyyy later, probably post-Episode 1 review.

Right. My take on those appearances in the Ep1 review is that Mike as RLM was just interviewing his friends (I can't imagine RLM was more than him and Jay back then), some of whom he later convinced to join RLM proper. Maybe. Who knows.

I think is only Rich who doesn’t went to film school but has a pretty decent past in blue collar work (I think he is the main person who design the sets and the Plinketto/WheelsOfTheWorst.

Yeah that's why I used the /middle class because I was unsure and going into film school is kind of a marker here. But there's obviously a lot of blue collar affectation from the whole VCR repair skit to the Midwestern, earnest, low brow, beer drinking, DIY and down to earth style.

Lot of their success probably has to do because nerds audiences loves nothing better than their own kin and they instantly relate to RLM. I know I do. They're living the dream of having become real movie critics from their mancave without having to "compromise" into what was the usual cursus honorum of the cultural elite.

To be honest I don't think their filmmaking is all that hot but they're self aware enough about that to avoid the Nostalgia Critic / Channel Awesome cringe combo of really obnoxious pretentiousness and total technical ineptitude.

Jumping back to Knights of the Old Republic times also makes some amount of sense, as it's really the only untainted part left (and probably the biggest EU piece that hasn't made it over to the new canon yet.) And they can easily do a trilogy there, and handwave any incontinuity or "weirdness" with "Eh it's just a long time ago, things were different."
