Liked the episode, no idea why they reviewed it but glad they did, I have it on plex so will give it a watch for a laugh in a couple weeks I guess.

HITB has been weird lately, I think they're getting sick of reviewing new films almost, I hope they don't kill themselves at Halloween this year drinking.

I don't have a lot of memories but the third Exorcist has unsettling, spooky parts. The Heretic is a trainwreck trying to juggle some high concepts (telepathy, evil as a disease /meme ?) but it's mostly a bore with only a few fulgurances. A bloated mess but partly palatable one because Boorman sure has an unique way. That theme is great/hilarious tho.

Jay touches on why I never loved the movie. All the build-up in the first two acts are great (and Ellen Burstyn carries it) and then that third act is a bit of a let down.

Poltergeist was the same way.

The Heretic is fascinating fever dream bullshit and I love it.

It's true, but I don't think it has the right pacing to really work. The mental clinic / hypno-machines segments really drag and the traveling bit, while cool, are disjointed.

As to Friedkin's rough, rude and abusive behaviour on set, I would note he has sometimes expressed regrets or at least some reflection (on the car chases for instance, saying he endangered lives, and that if he had to do it again, he wouldn't and nobody should, with how films can be made today) in long form interviews from the last... 15 to 20 years ? Depends on bit on which one you read, perhaps, because he has an habit of changing his mind on a dime and gets a kick out of provocation (though as far I know, not so much on that specifically).

I have only one question regarding Exorcist 2: Is the balcony Regan has in her city apartment something that really existed in the US at the time? The lack of handrail, is Star Wars level of absurdity, and the scariest bit of the film.

sorry to bump this, no the joker review is not posted yet

wanted to speculate on what they will say about it

as I was watching it I kept hearing Jay in the back of my mind saying "we get it" because the whole movie kept overexplaining itself at every turn, whether jokes or making statements on mental health

like when his neighbor comes home to discover him and is freaked out and says "your name is Arthur, right?  from down the hall?" and it's like
we got it, they never really met, it was his delusion, but no they need to show us scenes of him alone to explain

when the little person from work says "hey, the cops never questioned me," just leave a long pause, the cops know it wasn't a short person, got it

I think they'll like it but with reservations, they'll probably say any time anything Batman was referenced it was like whiplash drawing them out of the film

they'll probably like it until the ending when Joker looks into the camera and says "I am mentally ill and have nothing left to live for, you are bad man"

overall I expect it to be called a fusion of a dark character study with a popcorn comic movie, mental illness for the popcorn crowd, but still probably too weird and dark for grandma

They probably will talk more about the controversy and how it signifies that humanity is doomed.

yeah I hope they don't spend too long on it, they at least pay lip service but they also tend to try to focus on the actual film

this time around they might talk about how/whether controversy ends up affecting your final perception of the film, you can't just enjoy it for what it is, you're left with a sense of "THIS is what everyone was up in arms over?"

alright so my expectations were a little off, surprised they liked the third act over the early parts, I overestimated their disgust with comic book elements, they seem to be at the point where they take that in stride (though Jay did say he'd have liked it better if it wasn't a Joker film)

however Mike literally complained about this too:
Quote
when his neighbor comes home to discover him and is freaked out and says "your name is Arthur, right?  from down the hall?" and it's like we got it, they never really met, it was his delusion, but no they need to show us scenes of him alone to explain
:mike

Mike's gotten a lot more positive lately, there've been quite a few recent films where Jay was shocked that he enjoyed it, or he'll argue against Jay negativity

For better or worse, some people will really miss the “she was not real” part. One of my family member that saw the film totally missed this until the flashbacks. Ironically, she only started to really like the film until the third act.

The Ninth Configuration, the other Blatty effort, is an interesting film too. Good atmosphere overall, unique tone, switching from comedy to deep introspection and some visual flair.

It feels like Mike has been intentionally trying to hold back because there have been some embarrassing times where you could tell he was just completely gone and he doesn't want a repeat of that

the Patton Oswalt episode is the best example, he barely says a word the whole time and whenever he does he embarrasses himself, or you can tell he was about to say something and they cut out whatever he said

Overall I liked the halloween one, I was a little annoyed I knew about Shark Exorcist so that one was ruined for me.
But the fact they went into a deeper dive on is she a child or have learning difficulties made the swimming pool scene way funnier than it should had been.

It is ironic that they would've liked the movie more if Arnold and Linda Hamilton weren't in it, but then the movie never would've been greenlit if they sold it that way.

I think they still are in “Force Awakens is the Best Soft Reboot” mentality. Having the same story in such short period of time without Arnold or Linda would have been way worse than they showing themselves as elderly action starts.

I think the idea of Skynet being gone but having still a lot of Terminators around while having a middle age John Connor around would have been probably way better than just another “judgement day is inevitable”. Hell, you can still have that to an extent without using more time travel or having the thread of “machines taking over” so explicit.
