This post is something else
One of my co-workers is both trans and black. I work with him on a daily basis and he's an amazing individual. I can't even fathom the challenges he's had to deal with as a Caucasian cisgendered heterosexual male but I treat him with the same level of respect and attention I afford everyone else and I hope that's enough. I have a simple philosophy of treating everyone else how I'd like to be treated in return if I was in their shoes and it's a philosophy that has gotten me through life rather effectively.
Hey, that's my philosophy too and it really does work!
I've also had the opportunity to work a considerable amount of time in Manila where the Filipino culture is much more accepting and welcoming of its transgender population which I think is awesome.
I mean, yes... they're more accepting of it, but an American trans community would almost certainly say it's for all the wrong reasons. Basically, it boils down to "If you're gay, you must want to be a girl, so go be a girl". You will almost
never meet a normal male gay guy in the Philippines (or Thailand). Every single gay person you meet will be this ultra-feminine type who have probably incorporated women's fashion and/or makeup into their wardrobe somehow. Hell, it's almost as if the trans movement as we know it in the west pretty much doesn't exist there.
My wife is Filipino and she refused to believe that my brother was gay when she first met him because he has a beard and dresses like a hobo. It happened again and again and again when a showed several of her friends and family over there his photo, too
