Also if any Smash game was going to get "cookie points" (whatever the fuck that is) for gender inclusivity, it'd be Smash 4. I definitely feel like there was a focus in that game of adding women and female alt costumes.
Smash 64 had
2 female characters: Samus and (debatably) Jigglypuff.
Melee introduced
3.5: Peach, Nana from Ice Climbers, Sheik, and Zelda.
Brawl introduced a grand total of
1 female character: Zero Suit Samus.
Smash 4 on the other hand? Around
10 depending how you count: Villager (not the default tho), Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina, Mii Fighters, Palutena, Robin, Corrin, Bayonetta, Lucina and a Wendy O. Koopa alt for Bowser Jr.
Ultimate has Inkling Girl, Daisy and Pikachu can now be female too. Uh... and that's Nintendo "trying to win cookie points"??
