I read the entire thing and was familiar with him before that AMA and I honestly don't get that impression at all. I mean I'm sure there is a part of him that recognizes that he is profiting off his experience to an extent and that raises some ethical questions that I am sure he looks past to cash those checks, but it is profiting off material aimed at doing what is seemingly a well intentioned and socially beneficial cause.

He seems to have genuinely reformed and deeply loathes the white supremacist movement(just look at his twitter feed) but comes at it from a different place and perspective on how to deal with it(which considering how best to de-radicalize a society or a person is an open question that there isn't a smoking gun answer for right now, so maybe he and his organization is on to something, or maybe they are completely bonkers). One of a rehabilitative and not retributive mindset. Which I think there are quite a lot of very loud voices on Resetera that definitely have a very strict retributive mindset and are fairly hostile to anyone without one.

I hear you and definitely get where you are coming from in that sentiment. I speak from a position where his past actions basically only threaten me philosophically and morally, I as a white christian raised male would have very little to worry about in terms of physical or systemic violence from white supremacists and their proliferation. So I definitely try and respect the anger of people seeing someone like him being given the sort of sympathy and platform to speak of his journey that the people he once violently mobilized against have often been habitually and systemically denied.

Mine is simply that if his and his foundation's work is ultimately helping de-radiclize and transition people in the white supremacist movement, I'm all for it.

I mean it's a fair question to ask, I personally haven't seen any evidence that his organization or he himself are just snake oil salesman trying to profit off bleeding hearts, but maybe so. I think it is clear that many of those people came in to the situation with a bias, made some snap judgements and are simply seeking things to confirm it. Which is sort of the human condition when left unchecked. And knowing their pasts, they seem to be in it for the thrill of the fight, not really to persuade or have conversations.

Not really sure I get all the high-fiving over that if they think they found some smoking guns that prove his entire persona is a lie though. That seems like a really dark place if the presumption(and conclusion) is people are unable to be rehabilitated once radicalized.

I honestly expect some kind of government upheaval because of how fed up people are getting. That's a consequence of Trump's policies...they're so outlandish and blatantly evil that it spurs people from complacency to ACTION. The fact that Trump got elected in the first place is everything that's wrong with modern politics today, and we see the first signs of government resistance with protests trying to block ICE.

The system itself is untenable and needs to be broken down and rebuilt. I know I'll certainly join the protests when the time comes.
