Reading this thread is illuminating about just how many people defend the sort of power structures that private ownership entails.

I've always had a thing for Emi. She's a year younger than me (she's 18, I'm 19), but she's probably the cutest girl you'd ever meet. She's about 5'4" (Small but so much confidence she doesn't seem it), medium length light brown hair, and perfect curves. I mean she had the best ass in the entire school. When I arrived, we went up to her room and spread out on the floor with the assignment in front of us, then Emi told me "You can get started on that. I'm gonna go get a snack" and quickly disappeared. It seemed a little rude, but I also thought her forcefulness was pretty sexy.

Nearly thirty minutes later she came back to the room and I was laying belly down on the floor almost finished with her math assignment. She came over and laid down on top of me, peaking her head around from behind mine and wrapping her arms around my neck.

"Keep going, your almost finished," she said, when I started to hesitate, then ruffled my hair a little bit and called me a "good boy" when I continued working.

I finished up the last few problems and flipped around onto my back, so I could lean in for a kiss, but as soon as I done that, she lifted her torso up, so she was sitting on my chest instead of laying on me.

She really had the higher ground so I just stopped struggling to lean forward and laid there in defeat. She seemed to like that because she giggled a little bit then moved forward, securing the her dominance over me.

"Do you think I'm pretty?" she asked

I nodded eagerly and she giggled again all the while moving herself forward so that I was mere centimeters away from her crotch. I was so excited, that I didn't even notice her reach down to pull my head into her nether region. She was so strong that I was forced to smell her womanhood until I started to get dizzy from lack of air.

Right as I thought I would pass out she let go. I inhaled deeply for the whole ten seconds I was free, and then she pulled my head back in for more. This continued over and over again until I was so disoriented that I couldn't move.

Emi stood up and turned around then slid of her spandex shorts. I was regaining consciousness and getting turned on at the same time when she sat back down on me, only this time with her ass on my nose.

Dropping in to "well, actually" someone who does this professionally is not trying to engage in a discussion. Women, and particularly ones who are visible and outspoken online, are constantly inundated with this kind of "constructive dialog." Particularly from men.

Things like this don't happen in a vacuum. He may have been well meaning, but to someone who's fed up of getting these comments all the time it's not just a one off occurrence. It's a constant barrage. People love to mock "sensitive SJWs" for talking about microaggressions but this is exactly what happens. The amount of people in here acting like she's somehow beyond the pale for calling him a fucking asshat is just absurd to me. She was frustrated. I think that's totally justifiable. The ginned up effort to get her fired is nearly as pathetic as the company actually bringing the axe down. It's literally the GG playbook again. Because a women dared to be mad online. This absolutely would not have happened if it was a man who was replying like this. So, to boil this down.

- The "content creator" committed an act of misogyny with his attempt to mansplain her job to her, regardless if that was his intention

Price was the target of a misogynistic hate campaign. The @s towards here and other female devs is 99% GamerGaters and about 1% Guild Wars players. This is their standard mode of operation, they suddenly show up no matter the size of the community when they finally corner a target they've been chasing.

So, let's review:

- There is an active, prolonged campaign against women in the games industry.
- This campaign is actively managed and participated in by GamerGate, and can be confirmed by simply searching their subreddit.
- ERA has done a really, REALLY poor job of not giving GamerGate a free megaphone here, proved by facts and community feedback in the relevant community threads, because your "process" is so easily metagamed that I've almost wanted to become a troll account just to prove how broken it is because your moderators hands are so fucking tied not even Houdini could ban an obvious troll account
- Developers are not your property, are not on the clock 24/7, do not owe you a smile, and do not owe you the response you think you deserve
- The things people are claiming these devs on twitter owe them can all be obtained through the company's official support methods, you don't need to go after devs personally
- Critiquing games is okay, constructive critcism is great. Asking for someone to be fired because your feelings got hurt is bullshit, especially when male devs do it all the time and don't get a peep, and a bunch of people actually praise or like smartass male devs (see how many people brag about being blocked by Kamiya) while female devs doing the same are "misrepresenting their company" makes you immediately suspect as to your actual reasons for supporting Price's firing. As it should.

Thanksfully, the industry is about 90% on Price's side on this matter. O'Brian has done more damage to the industry as a whole than the mob could have ever done to his company. It's so fucking ironic that people want devs to be more open and "honest", and when they are, they want them to go back to being PR-laden call center script interactions because some people can't seem to remember that gaming is a hobby, not a goddamn identity and lifestyle.

On the Jessica Price firing, I agree with ArenaNet here.

This is exactly why I would have fired her without question. She lacked restraint and a respect for the players. Her gender should not a play a role in this. ArenaNet fired both Price (female) and Fries (male, who also took her side). Firing both was of them was SPOT on.

Her ego is her problem. She had a chance to teach, ignore or debate and instead chose instead to rant. My advice on your next job: stay off social media until you learn restraint.

The biggest reasonable reaction, at MOST, to this should've been people calling for a boycott of ArenaNet or something.

I can see the point of wanting insulting customers to have consequences.

But that consequence shouldn't be getting fired.

I fear for a world in which working for a company means you're eternally bound to be agreeable to people just because they're customers.

Personally, I think devs should just stop talking to gamers. Gamers have shown repeatedly that they can't be civil or reasonable and that the second they get their feelings hurt they start massive campaigns to harass and target people. Very few other mediums put up with allowing their employees to be treated like this routinely. And watching people in here defend this sort of stuff is just depressing, but not unexpected. Gamer entitlement in the guise of consumer rights continues to be one of the worst things that has happened to the industry. No one owes you an explanation. No one owes you a conversation. Buy the game or don't, but the idea that your purchase gives you the right to hound and terrorize developers is one of the most deeply fucked up notions held by a lot of otherwise reasonable people.

I was thinking about this earlier, like starting from the standpoint of "people shouldn't be fired for their behavior on social media, especially when a mob gets involved."  I don't think it's tenable.  There's just a huge difference between saying something that would normally get you written up or fired, and saying something possibly innocuous that attracts the ire of thousands.  The latter doesn't automatically absolve you, and the two can add up to be worse than just one or the other.

Like if you work at Subway and tweet "I'm gonna piss in every Mexican's sub today," and have employers who never check social media, it's pretty likely that an angry internet mob is going to form calling for your head long before your boss finds out about it.  Were you fired due to "mob justice" or because you were a racist dick and also public about it?

With this ArenaNet story, what if the tables here were turned?  A male dev gets tweeted at by a woman and he replies "lol as if any women know a thing about video games."  Should that attitude put you in jeopardy?  Doesn't it mean your work at the company as a writer is going to reflect those beliefs as well?

No, we're not saying that at all. We've been saying no response would not have resulted in this outcome for many pages. That wouldn't "extend or withdraw" anything.

But apparently by isolating to a small subset of arguments then expanding it to a major position you can argue against is par for the course.

The ability for this to happen is part for the course with regard to private property.

That it doesn't always happen is circumstantial. Every day, someone may have the abiltity to murder you without consequence, and they often choose not to.

The point is rather that the ability for this to happen at all shouldn't exist. At the very least, the ability to deprive someone of a secure existence should reside within a much greater community than a group of owners of private property.

This argument is much closer to an argument about whether a slave owner should or should not have beaten or killed a slave. It's on that same moral and structural level.

On a completely disregarded level would be a conversation about whether the master-slave relationship is one that should continue to exist.

I don't see that level of argument about this case. There's room for it, though.
