I actually didn't know that was the dynamic, but I get the logic now that you've laid it out. It's very much a view informed by the politics of trans identity and acceptance, rather than just a normal representation issue. It's not just about casting and representing trans people, you don't want casting that confuses trans people's gender.

I'd have thought a woman playing a woman with a male identity would be an ethically valid performance. After all, a trans man is born with a traditionally female body, but doesn't feel so internally. I'd have thought a cis female performance emulating that inner feeling of masculinity would be within the purview of respect for trans identity. But I guess it's more that Scarlett playing a man implies that trans men are interchangeable with cis women to wider society.

In that GamerGate thread, there are multiple bans on the first page alone. Scroll through the entire thread and you'll see many more bans, including some permanent ones.

I'll frequently click on threads about sensitive subjects such as politics, religion, and debates on current events and then scroll through them just to find another warning/ban. Once I find one, I'll read the reason for the warning/ban and then read the post to see what was so incendiary that it warranted moderation.
