I felt his second string of tweets explained the context just fine. And his desire to avoid an echo chamber, not that it’s apolitical, but wants to have a degree of sanity. Which I do agree with.

what all this misses, is that there are political actors who want people to not pay attention to politics. For some, having those not pay attention to politics, is just as advantageous for their political stances as having people swallowing propaganda.

Hence how being apolitical is inherently political. It's like wishing for non-wet water. It's a contradiction of terms.

Even though they basically all agree with him you can still see the staff eyeroll at Alex's attempts at political commentary and they've always more or less called every "gaming political controversy" that GAF or ERA would wank about for hundreds of pages stupid and shut it down within like five minutes or less rather than actually discuss it seriously.

GiantBomb is arguably a perfect example of an "apolitical" gaming site because Jeff, Brad, Vinny, etc. (and the late Ryan) all don't really give a shit about it (or agree with each other) so there's nobody to fuel it unless Dan asks something stupid. Even when Patrick was part of it and starting to stretch his progressive performance legs, he'd say his piece and they'd move on, often with Jeff or Ryan basically calling it stupid or something obvious. You can probably count on one, two hands, how many times they've actually seriously discussed one of these "issues" in their ten years in the free content.

As a result, I doubt anyone ever goes "woah, can't wait to hear how the GiantBomb crew discusses this" whenever some stupid "social studies worrier" thing of the week comes up.

Kind of weird to have a topic like this when we just had staff basically tell us to keep our politics out of the US Army Street Fighter V tournament discussion.

Here is a thing your website has to be to be "apolitical":

- No female contributors
- No GLBT contributors
- No mention of marketing that is hostile towards either group (such as the infamous Dante's Inferno ads)
- Absolutely zero discussion of crunch and labor issues, even if they have a huge effect on games
- Absolutely zero discussion of marketing
- Absolutely zero discussion of any story content of any game beyond "X did A. Then X did B. Then Y did C. The End".

Go against any of these lines, and you're political. Do the first two, and you are extremely political and will get a raging mob attacking you for it.

There is a *reason* people sneer at this kind of suggestion. Especially when the website in question previously courted, then outright SUPPORTED a harassment campaign, glorified Milo(!), and its staff made tweets directly supporting the aforementioned harassment campaign while they were trying to doxx and harass people, get women fired, silence women, and made death threats.

I have had women friends over the years but not many. I much prefer hanging out with guys. I dont like being with my girlfriends friends for example. My closest woman friend is great though, shes not your typical girl. No drama gossip or any of that shit. Shes cool.

The problem is, some people think a political message can only be intentional. Sometimes, you can have a political interpretation of something or a message that even the devs didn't even thought. Most of the games with a slight narration have a message. I don't know if Breath of the Wild devs had this message in mind about the developpement of Zelda. Maybe they did, maybe they didn't. In any case, it's a valid interpretation of these scenes, and one that I'm willing to share with you.
The funny thing is, I'm sure most of the people whining about "politics in my games" have games with political messages in their favorite games. In fact, most of the time, the people complaining about "politics in my games" are in fact complaining about "views I don't share or like in my games".
