That article on Left-wing smugness comes to mind. So many posts about how deplatforming works. Yet, I don't think the argument against it is really about how effective it is in phyiscally limiting a person's ability to reach an audience. I mean it is self-evident if a person has no platform to speak, then his ability to reach an audience is severely limited. The argument usually is, if you censor an idea it tends to have the opposite affect by making that idea more attractive. In that sense it is really too early to tell. You simply don't know where it will lead. I mean do you think the millions of people who watched Alex Jones have changed their minds now that he has been deplatformed? Maybe it has further cemented in their minds a sense of persecution, that the Establishment is out to get them. Alex is right!

In my mind it is not about whether it works or not--I'm sure there are incidences where it does--it is whether in the long run it is the most effective course of action. Ultimately, the only way to ensure free speech is to allow it for everyone. The only way to find the line that is acceptable for everyone is to not have one in the first place.
