This forum is fantastic at giving historical context and a ( democratic leaning) frame of reference for new developments, norms and standards of American politics.

Like, of course I could install ( say) CNN and MSNBC apps on my phone, bit I'd miss the accumulated knowledge of an entire democratic leaning forum. And as someone raised outside of the anglosphere, this knowledge has been instrumental to understand the current state of the US.

Let me be clear: the Iraq analogies have been popping up because you made them in the first place, and while I get what you want to express with that analogy, I think it's overly dramatic.

It's not meant to be dramatic. It's just that I watched Bush and co lead us into an unnecessary, catastrophic war with the best of intentions over the objections of people who saw that even being attempted with the best of intentions, it would end in catastrophe because the people involved did not understand the forces or circumstances with which they were attempting change. And so it becomes the obvious metaphor for me when a group of people think their righteousness is enough to justify overriding the concerns of people who understand the circumstances far, far better than they do.

Truly amazing, they can dress this up all they like but they knowingly tried to secretly force a major change on the whole site. There have been plenty of other changes to this forum that were discussed at length beforehand with proper notifications and ample time to discuss before the change. Yet, the biggest change since the site's inception isn't even afforded a day of discussion. Of course, that means the decision was already made, they weren't interested in any input from members.

This change is some cowardly bullshit.

Also I think it is telling that despite the mod/admin team saying this is not to hide political threads, some users are excited about the thought of not having to engage with political threads. Sounds like a case of design not knowing users' behaviors.

It’s kind of hilarious that there was no official immediate feedback thread after the layout change went live. They really don’t give a fuck.

The only "hilarious" thing here is that a) you accuse us of not giving a fuck despite me being here responding and staff reading the feedback as well and b) this basically serving as a feedback thread, and even if this thread would not exist, I'm pretty sure our members would find ways to make their voices heard. This could have been managed better, but those grand statements you are trying to make are making my eyes roll more than anything

Yep. And they'll come back with "Well you didn't have to join this forum", but since they were essentially the first to market they sort of got to lay claim to all the strong communities looking for an immediate home following the exodus.

It was real smart of them to canvas the community discords and whatnot so quickly and so thoroughly, but I think so many of us bought on to this site in that initial excitement based on promises or expectations that they're struggling to meet. And I know that's not part of their official End User License Agreements or whatnot, but the initial promise was what built the userbase of this site, first and foremost.

Listening to the users first and acting upon their voices should be the cornerstone of this site.

Can y'all even tell us who the "prominent community figures" were that contributed to this current decision? How were they chosen? What was the input process like and for how long did it last before the decision to go-ahead was made? The lack of transparency on this particular part feels quite awful for us apparently non-important community members (aka, most of the users on the site).
