The "abridged" Princess Bride isn't an actual thing, the "original novel" and "original author" are a fiction. Goldman used the fictitious author and his works a number of times in his novels.

That was part of his satires on the genre.

Everything he says at the start of the book and mostly throughout in his commentaries is actually a framing device with fictional details:
Quote
The Princess Bride is presented as Goldman's abridgment of an older version by "S. Morgenstern", which was originally a satire of the excesses of European royalty. The book, in fact, is entirely Goldman's work. Morgenstern and the "original version" are fictitious and used as a literary device.

Goldman carried the joke further by publishing another book called The Silent Gondoliers (explaining why the gondoliers of Venice no longer sing to their passengers) under S. Morgenstern's name.

Goldman's personal life, as described in the introduction and commentary in the novel, is also fictional. In The Princess Bride, Goldman claims to have one son with his wife, a psychiatrist. In reality, Goldman has two daughters, and his wife is not a psychiatrist.

There's a number of novels that have done this. Can't remember the name but there was a, I think, sci-fi one where the author claimed to have found lost manuscripts of a once super popular but now unknown author's grand masterpiece, but not only was the author slowly degrading with dementia, but his drafts are all written in a personal shorthand. None of this is true, and the main point of the satire was to poke at authors who write these grand universes and lore to the detriment of actually ever writing a compelling story to take place within them.

iirc, Tristram Shandy was once presented as an actual work by the said author; in part because nobody believed that someone would spend the time to make it up

Tolkien's far from the only one to ever do stuff like that, science fiction especially because it tries to explain everything logically/rationally will often spend excessive amounts of time trying to explain how every little thing in the universe works. Even decent science fiction will fall into this trap. Authors will write a first book with just enough world building to write that story. Then start writing sequels and spin-offs that just deluge you with lore.

Before I saw benji's post I was going to say the same thing, I totally fell for it too for years, eventually realizing when thinking about it later that it had to be satire, I mean there was one part where he described the original text having a 100 page diversion on everything Prince Humperdinck packed to go on a trip (or something excessive along those lines)

About to  :nerds :no1curr myself, but a few weeks ago I posted a theory on r/OnePiece that got a couple thousand upvotes.

I just started getting notifications of comments on it again, and someone linked to a page on comicbook.com that quotes my concise, simple theory and then adds 5 paragraphs of fluff around it to turn it into an "article." It also makes my theory sound way more nerdy than my post did. It's their #2 trending article right now.

You're welcome, Megan Peters, for your article. You should probably pilfer better quality posts next time, though.

 :lol

I started getting Google article suggestions for this site on my phone recently.  It's like nothing but clickbait for dumb shit and they always manage to turn what could be summarized in one sentence into several paragraphs.  Stuff like "HUGE NEW CHANGE IN ONE PIECE!!!!" and then you pull it up and it's a Mega Peters "article" about how Nami got a new dress or some crap.

Pogi I read your theory.

https://comicbook.com/anime/2018/11/26/one-piece-anime-manga-theory-luffy-biggest-power/

I don’t know why they made this an article. Oda spent months using Luffy’s fleet as cover pages and he’s against a yonkou. It seems pretty obvious given the stakes that the fleet will come. They lack allies and there’s no other way out of it. This is pretty obvious to me.

Yeah, it wasn't even a groundbreaking theory. I thought it was weird when it took off on reddit. The only reason I brought it up was to highlight the 1v1 caveat as it compares to what Mihawk said. The theory that Luffy's allies will help him take Kaido down was already believed by at least like 50% of the readers.

LotR does get overly detailed (I wish I'd known going in that none of the songs contained important plot points), but sometimes that detail pays off.

One of my favorite villain "Oh crap, I'm screwed" moments of reckoning is in LotR, and it's waaaaaay better than in the movie:

Quote
And far away, as Frodo put on the Ring and claimed it for his own, even in Sammath Naur the very heart of his realm, the Power in Barad-dûr was shaken, and the Tower trembled from its foundations to its proud and bitter crown. The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung.

From all his policies and webs of fear and treachery, from all his stratagems and wars his mind shook free; and throughout his realm a tremor ran, his slaves quailed, and his armies halted, and his captains suddenly steerless, bereft of will, wavered and despaired. For they were forgotten. The whole mind and purpose of the Power that wielded them was now bent with overwhelming force upon the Mountain. At his summons, wheeling with a rending cry, in a last desperate race there flew, faster than the winds, the Nazgûl, the Ringwraiths, and with a storm of wings they hurtled southwards to Mount Doom.

They are not exactly comparable, though. I get why would you prefer one over the other but the audience for LOTR was not exactly the YA Demographic.

Here is one time I remember where a class action had a positive effect. EA claimed everyone who bought the Limited Edition of Battlefield 3 for PS3 would get Battlefield 1943 for free, which they went back on. A class action was started and lo and behold everyone got their game. That firm is actually the same firm me and a bunch of other people contacted when we won Vitas from Taco Bell and they refused to honor us winning and tried to say it was a "glitch", we all ended up getting them in the end.

RedMercury sued Taco Bell and won.

Last time I went to France (my second visit) I had a breakdown and cried softly in a corner next to a statue at a museum on my last day when I had to go to the airport in a few hours. Literally on the verge of a panic attack at the idea of going back to Texas where most people around me are proud of their bigoted, uneducated society of bad healthcare, anti-socialism, working all year long without guaranteed vacation or benefits and crushing student debt until you die, only to be made bankrupt at the slightest life circumstance. And for what? Watching most of the French value culture, history, education, and a sense of social purpose and unity with their fellow countrymen was something I was extremely attracted to. It made going back to the extreme LIE of the American Dream unbearable.

An American with Paris syndrome?  I thought that was only for Japanese.  Dude must be a weeb.

I still don’t get how Tolkien went from the awesome, brisk Hobbit to the tedious, tired LOTR. “Fell off” doesn’t even describe it.

I remember trying to read it in middle school, and I couldn't even get through it after I instituted my "skip all songs" rule. Shut is just boring as hell.

I want to rant about how I basically every time I leave the US to another developed or closely-developing country, I have a PTSD-caliber bout of panic and dread when I have to get back on the plane to go back to the US and its culture, politics, and social systems.

My husbands from California. We are moving wherever for my grad school if I get accepted, but then hopefully we can leave afterward.

We’re considering it. We could live comfortably, probably even have a maid. He’s actually bilingual in English/Spanish just like me (but he also speaks French) and certified in bilingual and special education so he could do really well there with me. The gay culture is more undeveloped and you have to be really careful with being gay in public outside of the urban gay neighborhoods, but overall our quality of life in other aspects would be much more affordable, fulfilling, and in line with our life goals, so we are considering it. I have a family that has lived back and forth in both countries and knows exactly how to support and set us up to live successfully in Colombia. Most of them end up back in Colombia because it’s just more comfortable for us.

I’m considering it because I will need open heart surgery later in life and I don’t know if I can afford it in the US. Colombia has the best cardiac surgeons in Latin America and I have full access to them if I pay into a cheap EPS so I’m considering if we should just go there after I finish grad school in the US. I could he coveted with US STEM degree/experience and native bilinguality.

Lol, yup American and Canadian food culture is shit because of the UK beginnings. Julia Child was a famous chef in the US because she learned French style cooking and taught Americans the basics.

It's getting better in major cities.

If only we had a melting pot of cultures and immigrants to inform our food culture.  Oh well, back to my eel and spleen dessert pie.

I don't think anybody knows what fascism means. :doge

Or they're using Stalin's definiton, where everything is fascism. :trumps
You can see from the start they think xenophobia/racism = fascism. When their examples of fascism are Brexit and an ad run during the Brexit campaign about the threat of immigration to the UK.

This is a common problem among the youth because basically everyone ignores Giovanni and Benito and thinks Hitler was the fascist founding father.

Even if they believe that Hitler was the founder of fascism, they would still be doing wrong comparisons.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_syndrome

Quote
Paris syndrome is a transient mental disorder exhibited by some individuals when visiting or going on vacation to Paris, as a result of extreme shock derived from their discovery that Paris is not what they had expected it to be. The syndrome is characterized by a number of psychiatric symptoms such as acute delusional states, hallucinations, feelings of persecution (perceptions of being a victim of prejudice, aggression, or hostility from others), derealization, depersonalization, anxiety, and also psychosomatic manifestations such as dizziness, tachycardia, sweating, and others, such as vomiting.
