Way back in high school our running back had shit ankles and he used to tape the fuck out of them so he could keep playing. Eventually he started shaving his lower leg so it wouldn't hurt so much to take the tape off. That looked a little silly with his legs shaved half way so he started do the rest.

By virtue of living in the same smallish city I saw him last year as our daughters were in the same swimming class and he's still shaving his legs and we're in our mid thirties now. So maybe there is something to it.

For the US version they changed the mammy to have pink skin and she throws doughnuts instead of farting

And the second boss is a chippendales guy who is possibly gay

Keighley was an okay journalist, actually Schreier is a pretty good comparison because those long form development stories are what Keighley used to do best too. It's weird how like there's only one of those in the industry at any single moment.

Keighley's been a promoter type for a while now, ever since his GameTrailers show really which is why he hosted the VGA's in the first place, he's been more into that. (As well as asking Gabe endlessly for a Counter-Strike 2.) Though on his online show (that is still going?) he did sometimes actually bring up stuff directly with the devs who are there to promote. Though when he did it with Respawn they were pretty clear that it was them wanting to talk about it finally (the divorce from Activision) and I think that's most of it, an opportunity for them to address something. I just remember the last time I saw it was GAF getting all excited about him PUTTING THE SCREWS TO BIOWARE (or whoever it was), when it was an obvious pre-agreed topic and then Geoff was just doing follow up Q's that he had canvassed for on twitter earlier or something so they thought he was going totally off-script when nah. But then GAF/ERA doesn't really understand how journalism, or really anything, like producing food to consume, seems to work, so I can't blame them.

A heavily incestuous relationship between producers and awards ceremonies are the only reason there are awards ceremonies that receive extensive media coverage.

There was the post from ERA trying to explain the Oscars as somehow different because it doesn't show trailers of upcoming films, but everything else about the Academy Awards is an incestuous relationship and has been tied into studio marketing schemes and plans for decades. Premiering "exclusive" trailers probably would be a good idea for reviving the attention paid to the Oscars. Same with songs at the Grammy's, etc.

IIRC, from the MTV oral history book, MTV's VMA's ran into this criticism (and threats) from the establishment due to it initially being totally transparent about the whole affair as incestuous spectacle. That this was happening at the same time Grammy's were going to Jethro Tull and Milli Vanilli created a sort of crisis of confidence for the Grammy's, not MTV or the artists themselves, let alone the fanbases.

That was one reason the VGA/VGX/Game Awards made public the list of who the judges (longterm and big name games journalists) were and made a big deal about how their votes were sequestered from not only the marketing of VGA's but the other judges themselves. Which always makes it funny when people complain when games journalists every year pick the same games that games journalists have wanked over all year and wank over in their own outlet awards. Titles like Dad of War, or Last of Us or Uncharted, are almost laser targeted at them and in increasing ways as the demographics match up, of course they're going to clean up.

When they let fans vote instead everyone whines about how Call of Duty and other big selling titles win.

The AIAS/DICE and GDC awards have always been more diverse and less prone to this narrow groupthink, instead following their own. AIAS's awards were for years jokingly referred to as the game awards for "underrated games from [XXXX]" articles in three or five years. Because it was where stuff like Deus Ex was winning while every one in popular media was selecting Halo or whatever.

Like seriously, I've seen it in virually every thread about the Chinese government for the past few months. Why pretend it's based in racism when it's clearly not?

There was a study that was discussed on this forum recently where it showed that the media was more likely to report on crimes committed by black people, release videos, describe them in more unflattering ways, etc. There was obviously an element of racism, but it was pretty subtle (well, not to black people, but to everyone else). And despite that study, you STILL have people who believe that black people are just more violent and commit more crimes, and don't even realize that their thoughts were based on an already biased information system to begin with.

Similarly, there are threads on China, and that's not the problem, but the responses are incredibly simple minded and reductive, and signals an underlying current of racism/bigotry. You may not pick up on it, especially if you're not Asian, but that doesn't mean it's not there. You're welcome to come into the Asian ERA thread and see our discussions or complaints about this question you're asking. But basically, it comes down to any discussions about China (and Japan) and often incredibly shallow and reflects people's attitudes about how they view those countries, people, and culture. Most of the time, the majority of people have little to no understanding or knowledge but don't bother to educate themselves because they see it as beneath them... again, emblematic of a subconscious predetermined views.

The fact that people HAVE the exact same fears and shallow views of China/Japan/Vietnam/etc, across the years, for different reasons, show this is way more influenced by racism than people here would like to believe.

That so many western Asians all say they sense and feel this, shouldn't be dismissed. I'm not the only one. I was born and raised in the US-- I'm not some CCP agent or whatever-- but it's something I noticed ever since the days of NeoGAF. That attitude was brought over here, too.

I think it's both a conscious tactic on the part of the Chinese government and those who are sufficiently captured by it, as well as being an organic response from the well-meaning but misguided liberal who cries racism any time a cross-border criticism of government, law, ideology, religion, etc is attempted.

Funnily enough, many of us Asian Americans/western Asians view y'all the same way-- a bunch of so-called progressives who are unable to have any self-reflection about your current biases and prejudices because y'all are so sure in your own goodness and righteous and progressiveness.

There's plenty of legitimate cross-border criticism of religions, cultures, and countries, but the fact is that most people here don't offer that and instead echo sentiments that betray not just distaste for a particular form of government but also of those people. That's when it crosses into racism.

I extend to you the offer to please feel free to come by Asian GAF and see what we're discussing, what we're saying, and how we feel. It's pretty messed up that so many people feel like they're completely justified in ignoring actual Asian voices.
