Somebody at my work explained this for me. And I’m pretty sure she wasn’t joking either.

Okay, so apparently there’s a thing called ‘shame culture’ in which you gain ‘status’ by alerting the tribe of something someone said or did that’s presently incorrect. It doesn’t matter if the incorrect thing wasn’t seen as being incorrect when it actually happened - it only matters that it’s seen as being incorrect now.

Apparently, you ‘score points’ if you come down hard on the person’s behaviour (it’s a way of signalling to the tribe that you’re one of ‘the good guys’). If you’re the one highlighting the bad behaviour then apparently you score major points, or at least get ‘a lift’ from seeing so many people agreeing with you.

The person who told me about this, btw, has happily led me down the garden path about five thousand times now, but like I said above, in this case I think she was being serious. .

Quote from: Frank O'Connor, who is definitely not recovering from a series of strokes and currently on long term leave from being the Development Director of the Halo franchise at 343 Industries
I have no strong feelings about Gordon Ramsay, other than his face is not appetizing, and this isn't in any way a defense of his behavior in that clip or elsewhere - but that "staying at work" phenomenon is quite common and has to be contextualized by the couples involved - soccer players have played the world cup, olympians have competed for gold, husbands have gone to sign house closing contracts and so on and so on. It can be a very reasonable - and perhaps the right thing to do.

A Michelin Star is going to have a gigantic effect on their long term income and life and the legacy they're building for their child - and if the parents are agreed that it's in the best interests of the way they live their lives - then it should be up to them, but it's not at all (on its face) indicative of any moral failing. If he'd stayed in the kitchen because they had some lame celebrity guest, or because truffles had arrived unexpectedly, then sure, but in this specific case, a Michelin star is not a trivial thing - and I'd be surprised if his wife hadn't told him to stay.

I wasn't there, so I have no idea, but I can tell you that if I were in a similar suituation, I don't know what I would do, but I do know what my wife would say, because she'd think about it holistically and rationally and realize that the better thing for her and the child, would be the long-tewrm benefit. Again, I'm not sure what I'd do but inn a world where we did agree to it, she'd have family and friends and I'd Facetime in if I could and so on.

I don't watch late night TV at all. I think it's fair then that I ask a question.

First of all, I believe that the way this woman was spoken to by Gordon Ramsay was highly inappropriate. I would never carry on this way with someone I just met or at all, frankly. It's just not how I was brought up. Your experience may vary.

What percentage of female interviews from late night/casual guests shooting the shit shows have this kind of banter in it?

Would you say it hardly ever happens? Happens more than you'd like? Happens all the time?

Watch any cooking reality show older than 3-4 years and you’ll see a lot of creepy chefs being childish about attractive women.  Definitely one of those industries where women have had to put up with shit.

Things are changing though and that’s good.  Seems like a simple apologize and move on moment.

It's definitely a boy's club and the women that make it far are mostly as raunchy and rough as the guys and engage in similar horseplay and suggestive language.

I'm pretty sure I had 20 years of free FHM subscriptions stacked up from that era when magazines were so desperate for subscribers you could pretty much just get any magazine you wanted for free by filling out a survey (except for, you know, the good ones). I'm hope the people that moved into my apartment when I moved out 6 months later really enjoyed it.

Because society gave less of a shit about stuff like that then, we weren't in middle of a surge of women coming forward to say how prevalent that sort of thing was, and the women that were there were few ready to listen. It didn't make it right, it wasn't right to do at the time. Things change, and now we're in a time where we're more willing to listen to women and hold people accountable for their actions.

Hey you thick skulled fuck. Society did respect women then and now. The only thing that has happened is what went on in private became public. You really think sexual assault on national tv would not have been news then ?

Quote from: Completely healthy and not at all showing signs of needing medical assistance, Frank O'Connor, Franchise Development Director of the Halo franchise at 343 Industries
This sounds like it was written by a 15 year old Nazi who never read a single newspaper.

...

I thought this was going to be a trainwreck, but not a low energy, definitely counterproductive PigPen fly-orbit like this. Here's what I think:

1. He or an idiot like Miller suggested an address from the Oval Office. A know-nothing got him hot and excited for it. They immediately comitted to the Oval Office network plan.
2. They originally planned to do something huge like an emergency order or some sort of presidential power usage but they didn't know what, exactly.
3. All their big ideas were dumb as shit and they got nervous, or were advised not to by Mitch etc. and we got a muted mumbling repeat of the talking points with some new extra lies and really bad presentation.

If I was one of his Nazi cohorts I'd be sweatin' because when Trump reads the response to this on Twitter, or watches the TV follow ups, he's going to be PISSED.

"I asked for a declaration of war on mexico and you made me look dumb!! <throws shoe>

Well, at least it was mercifully short, but my god WTF was the point of it? It made him look clipped and robotic to his fans. He made it 100% political and told about 100 lies. Another own goal with zero benefit and lots and lots of negatives. I think some GOP folks waiting for something with teeth or meat are just going to have to concede it's not coming and that they may have to cross the aisle and vote. Just trash.

Well, like about a hundred other things in the last week, if anyone else had just delivered that speech, their closest allies would be planning their exit strategy, the 25th ammendment and a nationwide apology for the morning news cycle. So it's absolutely the right gif, but if we could time travel to three, eight or twelve years ago and have the sitting president do that speech, it would have been a presidential and potentially constitutional crisis.

So if nothing else, it's a good reminder of how gaslit we are as a nation - all the way through our institutions - and that the GOP enabled, permitted, capitualted to and normalized all this, and never once paused or slowed their existential apoplectic criticism of tan suits and dance gifs. Now what I would add to this obvious rehash of what we've all been saying nonstop since the start (I'd argue that post-southern strategy, the start of the complete abdication of facts by the media writ large, is maybe like Colin Powell's silly easily disprovable vial of "yellowcake uranium") is another obvious rehash, which is that the media (and that has to include big social media) is the only vehicle by which it COULD have been normalized, and their already tattered reputation as the fourth estate - and maybe one of the few that could be gradually fixed through pressure and even legislation in the future.

The media is complicit in this through action, inaction and a venal business model that does not financially benefit from veracity. If there's ever been fresh proof of that, it's what the major networks enabled today and the pure nothing they're going to do to ammend it.
