The film has some controversies, so it was not exactly a favorite.

Such as what? I'm not familiar with this movie.

IIRC the gist of it is that it's pretty watered down all around and that the white character is the protagonist while the black one is the supporting one. In short that it's more of a fluffy feel good movie for white liberals than a socially conscious one.

And I would think a lot of people on ERA are just displeased with that film and would have preferred for others to win (not necessarily Black Panther lol).

Bring back Chappelle Show

If you go back and watch it, it's full of good sketches, but also some really awkward ones and then it has some that aren't PC. It's not like it wasn't uncontrovertial at the time, but they got away with it.

I mean, Comedy Central before the 2010s was pretty un-PC if you ever watched Strangers with Candy. Essentially, I don't think it would work unless they tweaked it lots.

I thought Green Book was pretty good, wouldn't consider it particularly a feel good movie even though that's what I expected when going to see it. Personally thought the snobby, intelligent black dude and the dumb ass white guy dynamic was new to me, at least outside of the buddy cup genre, so I don't get all the complaint treating it as just another white saviour movie.

I don't particularly care for Oscars and shit but it's already a huge honor to be acclaimed with such rewards, especially for a mainstream popcorn flick like Black Panther.

I mean if you believe it's all backdoor politicking and optics, that all those technical awards are meaningless consolation prizes (though it wouldn't surprise from someone equating the massive work going into the costume department of a sci-fi extravaganza to a stereotypical statement about Black people fashion sense), wouldn't it make a Best Picture win worthless too ? Why even care at that point ? Cinema is so fucking vast and it's diversity has never been so accessible, I don't even get the mindset (except the entitlement of nerds that need to be vindicated on all fronts, from box office to institutional accolades, everyone else be damned).

Slightly related, but I actually went to the same university as the two dudes hired to be the "attackers" - Quincy University. One of them came up to me at the schools gym and asked me to take "sexy pictures" of him because he saw me filming sports highlights for the school and assumed I did photography. I guess he was trying to get a modeling career going. I did not do it btw.

 - its not a documentary about what the real life Green Book was.
 - The driver wasn't really buds with the star, and there wasn't any mutual respect and understanding. The star was a dick who treated him like the help that he was.
 - Some dredged up twitter timeline bullshit and some poorly phrased arguments made in an interview 
 - the directors previous films are definitely not oscar-bait

The implication here is that some guy from high school is very hairy and Rachel expresses disgust at this.

Now, is this problematic?

People who are hairy and self-conscious about it, such as myself, may have felt stung by this joke. But many other people may have laughed at it and never gave it a second thought.
