Long video discussion thread that isn't shit
« on: March 28, 2018, 02:34:54 PM »
Basically I want a thread where people can actually post potentially longer video content without it being shitted up by agenda posting or just meme posting or one poster versus 100 forums wars like that other thread started by etoilet. Videos can be about anything but would appreciate less useless content so its not a waste of my time to ever enter the thread.

Random examples below pulled out of my ass.

I've pimped these videos before in another thread but I'll do it again here. Obscurus Lupa posts reviews of bad movies and TV shows that are funny but her magnum opus is her baywatching series where she reviews every single baywatch episode. She's not even halfway yet. I think they are hilarious.

Great video, btw I was waiting for her to mention Blade Runner, I knew she was one of us.

But, but I have the solution for the Oscars ratings without wasting you 30 mins. Just one name: Bill Burr. Make him a host and let him loose on those pretentious assholes and watch ratings go through the roof. I'd give my left pinky to watch that.

I randomly watched a clip from the 1992 Oscars on youtube a couple weeks ago and was immediately struck by the nonstop flurry of iconic actors and big movies. IMO the thing that hurts the Oscars most now is that these new stars don't really fucking matter, and nobody sees the films nominated for major awards. In 1992 the Best Picture noms were:

Silence Of The Lambs (winner)
Beauty And The Beast
Bugsy
JFK
The Prince Of Tides

All successful films to varying degrees, and most feature major actors. Warren Beaty, Barbara Streisand, Kevin Costner, Anthony Hopkins, etc. Whereas today...who gives a fuck about anyone in The Shape Of Water?

The films people see today won't even sniff an Oscar nom, ie cape shit and various remakes and blockbuster sequels. There's seemingly not much room or interest in smaller films today, so those films go largely unnoticed. Then awards season comes around and no one has seen anything outside of...whatever Jennifer Lawrence starred in I guess.

I haven't seen Shape of Water yet but I did see Three Billboards, another big Oscar winner this year.

And....it wasn't a bad movie, I liked it well enough, but man the hyperbole....

Phoenix mostly covers it, but there is simply a larger divide between the movies that people pay to go see and the movies that the academy wants to reward to reflect their artistry.

The divide isn't new but the lack of genre diversity among the top box office films has exacerbated the process.

In terms of artistry I would to put Blade Runner 2049 at the top of my list. The story didn't quite grab me as much as I had hoped and the soundtrack was not as good as Vangelis score for the first one but other than that it should have taken home buckets of oscars.

Well it did win two in technical categories.

Taste is always variable. I wasn't a big fan of Shape of Water but certain segments seemed to like that movie

Blade Runner 2049 is such a good movie that I could hardly believe it exists in this day and age.

I think Star power has mostly been hit with inflation by Marvel. They obviously don't want another RDJ situation where they have to pay millions to continue a movie series.
So instead they just throw as many stars as possible in the new movies all fighting for 5 or 10 minutes of screen time beating CGI armies. Chris Hemsworth is not the star, like Bruce Willis of Robert de Niro was. Thor is.
If you have like 3 Chris's competing in front of the same green screen they kinda become a blur. Even if the movie is about one character, they still have 3 or 4 heroes on screen anyway.

The time when big actors or actresses would carry movies on their own is pretty much over. Especially with the likes of Kevin Spacey now shitcanned because of his adventures.

I would have been fine with Blade Runner winning more awards. Hell my favorite of the oscar movies was phantom thread which didn't even make back its budget. But the same debate would still be in place.

Blade Runner wasn't an especially mainstream movie and nobody saw it outside of film nerds. So while I think its a better movie than Shape of Water, its not a movie that the masses identify with.

I don't think that's actually true though. Blockbusters get a lot more visibility but there are dozens of indie distribution companies thriving these days. Annapurna, a24, lionsgate, amazon, magnolia, focus, to name a few off the top of my head

I don’t think it’s that people don’t want to see actor-driven, story-driven, auteur movies anymore, it’s just that they don’t care about seeing them in theaters. You go to the theater to got your eyeballs blown out by the Walt Disney Corporation, and then go home and rent Three Billboards on Amazon.

Because most of those airplane videos are pumped out from Asian countries for a quick buck and they use a bot to narrate them.

The voice reminds me of the darkly comical text-to-speech adaptation 4chan made years ago from an excerpt of Elliot Rodger's ridiculous and disturbed fantasies from his 'Day of Retribution' manifesto, set to classical music.
