Seems to be including games that arent available to purchase at all on PSN. Or just games that ARE supported but not released (since it is probably using the PS1 emulator they have)

When they revealed the og 5 titles on it, it was pretty clear that this would be an embarassment. Actually, there's more big IPs than I expected (though still missing tons of titles that are more necessary than Wild Arms and Cool Boarders) - however, for the big gets they also seemingly chose the inferior entries all the time (GTA, RE, Persona,...).

I dont think its a terrible lineup but considering the other choices out there there has to be some weird licensing issue for whatever reason...... on sony products

Like, parasite eve for JP but not NA?

It's not terrible like demi said, but there's some glaring omissions here.  Like...Rainbow Six over Castlevania Symphony Of The Night?  No Wipeout?  No Tenchu?
 :nope

Licensing issues have got to be part of the problem.  Maybe what stopped games like Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk'd Pro Skater from being included.  At least put in Motor Toon Grand Prix.  :'(

There's a cheap HDMI cable that's about to come out for PS2, too.  It's not the best and doesn't offer progressive scan though.  I'm probably going to end up getting one of those $100 Retrotink 2X upscalers.

Gta2 > gta1

Right??  Why would they go with GTA1 over GTA2 and Twisted Metal over Twisted Metal 2 for that matter?

To give Nintendo’s credit, because they’ve done so many collections and virtual console stuff they know what players consider is good. This is Sony’s first ever compilation of games like this. In the past they just dumped the games on psn so they don’t know what’s good.

I doubt ps1’s capability of looking good on hdmi. But eh. Component works for that system very well.

Don't think you need to be a rocket scientist to take a look at the most popular games on the system and make a compilation out of it.  There's some top selling games that didn't make it in and it's a bit of a head-scratcher.  Tomb Raider is another game that comes to mind.

One of the GOAT libraries was basically wasted on something NES Mini-tier, instead of channeling SNES Mini, which did surprisingly well with its 20 spots (though in both cases it's still way too few). I wanted to be edgy and get Jumping Flash used, since this is the thing that would interest me the most. But that shit goes for like 60€  :crazy

You'd have to spend more to buy a memory card and a controller, but yeah.  Haven't looked into homebrew in a long time but pretty sure you can install whatever games you want on it now.

Am still hoping for someone to announce that the PS1 Classic is just a repurposed PSTV in a new shell and easily hacked.  :P

Would have been great to have had something released with the system that never got an English release prior, like the Sony equivalent to Nintendo including Starfox 2 with the SNES Classic Mini.  First thing that comes to mind is Tobal 2.  Number two would be Slap Happy Rhythm Busters.

It’s a classic. The only street fighter on psx worth putting on it is Alpha 3. I love alpha 2 but the psx version sucks and has long load times. There’s too many good ps1 games.

That NA line up is pretty damn lame. Where's Syphon Filter? Front Mission 3? Tony Hawk pro Skater 2? Vagrant Story?!

The PS1 has a really fucking good library and of course Sony shits the bed gathering any of them together.

Syphon Filter is there, my bad, eyes are crusty. Point still stands. Rainbow Six should get kicked the fuck out.

I dunno. Metal Gear Solid, Coolboarders 2 (can understand why people wouldn't be jazzed about this, but I am personally), Wild Arms, Final Fantasy 7, Ridge Racer Type 4, Intelligent Qube (this is the WTF of the list, but I love it, played the shit out of the demo), Tekken 3, Super Puzzle Fighter Turbo, Biohazard/Resident Evil: Director's Cut and Rayman are all solid/classics.

There's a few clunkers (GTA isn't as good as GTA2 IMO, and this doesn't include the 1969 expansion), Persona (WTF, you can play the PSP retranslation on a goddamn phone if not your goddamn PSP. This TERRIBLE translation is there for JRPG fans that don't want FF7 and Wild Arms? REALLY?). But that list is mostly solid for the US.

The only thing I'd want from Japan is Armored Core and Parasite Eve. But you can't get them all. :/

I'd still say to get a Raspberry Pi, like I have for all these mini-consoles that are limited in their selection.

I'd dump GTA, Wild Arms and Rainbow Six at least. Would love to see Tombi, Wipeout and Alundra. Buying on the assumption it will be hackable. Don't care for SPF2 or Mr Driller either. Hard af to get a satisfying 20, but there's a fair few filler slots here. Really surprised the only popular adventure platformer that makes the list is Rayman (oops and Oddworld. Yeah I guess they're prob most popular/had the highest sales? Idk eh). Would pass on that every time for Klonoa DTP, Tombi 1, Pandemonium, Heart of Darkness or Castlevania SOTN.

I really liked GTA at the time when I didn't know better, and it would prob be regarded more fondly if it had analogue top down shooter controls, but the tank controls designed for the pre analogue era are beyond frustrating.

You can't/don't assign tasks to your teammates, there's no preplanning other than the entry point, it's just a god awful framerate PS1 FPS where you can hop into the other members if you die.

It's okay, but not adequate if you're doing just 20 games. It's as if SNES Mini got Breath of Fire instead of FF6 and Actraiser 2 over Castlevania. Some might actually prefer the former and there's now more games on this thing that I don't own yet, but you still gotta cover the basics/big hitters/really seldom classics if you want that 80-100$ pull.

Playstation — December 3, 1994
Dual Analog Controller — April 25, 1997
Playstation 2 — March 4, 2000

Your nostalgia or anecdotal experience isn't serving you well, here.

That's about half it's life. A bit less if you count to the introduction of the PS2. You could readily argue that the PS1 had legs beyond introduction of the PS2, but most publishers jumped ship to that new console with alacrity.

Most games didn't use them. Making games which required or even took strong advantage of the nonstandard hardware is a quick way to limit the potential sales base.

Ehhh. I mean. Ps2 came out in 2000 but most people didn’t jump in until 2001.

Also, while you could argue it came out “late” in its life, 1997 is prime ps2. FF7 came out in 97. The system didn’t get busy in a big way until specifically that year. Most people got PlayStations in 97 or 98. So it coming out in 97 is pretty impactful. Let’s not forget that back then, rumble was a huge, new, defining feature. Few people didn’t upgrade to at least one dual shock once it came out after the dual analog.

Finally, you are relying on Japanese release dates. I am not Japanese, I’m American. And the ps1 came out in September 95. So by our perspective, dual analog controller came out less than two years into its life. So uh, definitely not nostalgia. When you consider that its biggest games used analog, and sony based an entire, iconic game around the set up, that most of us were still using our systems and playing ps1 well into 2001 (Final Fantasy IX, Vagrant Story, and Chrono Cross all came out in 2000) it’s like the equivalent of a N64 mini not having 64 Ram upgrade games. The dual analog was an iconic, integral part of the system and to criticise Sony for not having it in a mini PlayStation isn’t nostalgia. Especially given the entire point of the mini system is...nostalgia.

Dual analog/Dual Shock was still a pretty big deal.  There were games released in bundles with the controller like Tekken 3 and games re-released for it like Resident Evil Director's Cut.

And it's not like the PS1 just went away after the PS2 came out- especially when the console launched outside of Japan towards the end of 2000. Capcom released Dino Crisis 2, Mega Man Legends 2, and Breath Of Fire IV, Square released Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy IX, and Activision released Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, Spider-Man, and Tenchu 2 in 2000 for example.  Sony also re-released the PS1 as the PSone with the optional attachable screen turning it into a semi-portable console that breathed some new life into the system.

Remember when Capcom re-released Resident Evil 1 and 2 to have rumble?

I mean chrono, I’m seeing your point but saying it came out in 97 and therefore  half way through the systems life makes no sense.

Here’s some of the best selling psx games as per Wikipedia:

Gran Turismo (10.85 million shipped)[1][2]
Final Fantasy VII (9.72 million)[3]
Gran Turismo 2 (9.97 million shipped)[1][2]
Final Fantasy VIII (7.86 million shipped)
Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (7.13 million)[4]
Crash Bandicoot (6.82 million)[4]
Metal Gear Solid (6.03 million)[4]
Final Fantasy IX (5.30 million approximately;)[5]
Tomb Raider II (5.24 million)[4]
Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back (5.17 million)

Correct me if I’m wrong here but of these games, only Gran Turismo 1, FFVII, and Crash Bandicoot 1 didn’t support analog.

Seems like good lists both US and JPN. With so many good games on the system, it'd be tough to make a great list that satisfied everyone in under 50 games.

Maybe it's my own anecdotal experience that's betraying me?

I was on-board with the PS (1) from the beginning, and almost all the games I remember strongly were all d-pad, and I didn't get Analog Controller-styled thing until the very end-of-life for my PS. OTOH, the DualShock 2 with PS2 is where I associate analog control being associated with gameplay. You guys are probably right.

Analog controller didn't come out in the U.S. until August 1997. Dual Shock came out in Japan in November 1997 and the Dual Shock came out in U.S. in May 1998. When the Dual Shock became available in a territory Sony officially dropped support for the earlier version.

BUT and I think this might settle some stuff up here.

Sony had sent the analog controllers and their libraries around in the fall of 1996. That's how it had support in all the newest games in Japan when it came out. As I'm sure Chrono knows, Japan tended to get hardware with a tiny bit of software, there'd be a wait and then finally software. But this wasn't the case for a change, the latest titles like Bushido Blade already had it built in even though the game came out in Japan a month before the controller did. So by the time many of those games came to the U.S. they had already had it built in sometimes up to a year or more in Japan, with the U.S. controller release still to come.

Sony has long claimed they had the analog controller in development BEFORE the N64 truly showed, it just confirmed to them that it was viable when someone like Nintendo makes it the main part of their controller. I'm sure there's some fudging there but they probably had messed with the various ideas, you had stuff like the NegCon that used analog controls already available and supported in non-Namco games even. I imagine Sony had a variety of prototypes sitting there and when they saw the N64 controller said "alright, let's actually do one of these."

The original analog controller actually has a third mode on it, the Dual Shocks don't, it emulates Sony's Analog FLIGHTSTICK that games like WarHawk and Descent used. So it actually allows analog usage in games that don't have "true" support for the new controller. And there was probably some part of Sony's skunkworks trying to translate those sticks into a smaller controller that led to the dual analogs partly.

But because of the fact that it was an add-on, there weren't many analog-only titles, so PS2 was really the first time they knew you had the analogs. I never had any PS1 analog controllers personally, I was d-pad until "the end" which basically meant when I shifted over to PC/Dreamcast around 1998-99 and only kept up with a few PS1 games including some like TONY HAWK that were superior with the d-pad come fight me rite now.

I actually had a dual analog stick THRUSTMASTER controller for my PC before I did a console.

The first US dual analog also had lonnnggger handles FOR THOSE GIANT AMERICAN HANDS, then Sony standardized it across territories with the Dual Shock:

And the top of the sticks were like Xbox ones, concave instead of convex.

I think it’s...complicated.

Here’s the thing about PlayStation 1. It wasn’t like ps2 where analog was required. All the games with few exceptions that had analog were playable with d-pad. So you could get by and it wasn’t a necessity to buy a dual shock. But we were teens during this systems life. And having something like rumble was nothing to scoff at. Stuff like analog sticks and rumble were really cool, neat, innovative features for the time that enhanced the games for a lot of us. So to us its absence is confusing. But as I said, again, it also wasn’t a requirement. So both experiences are actually valid.

I was working at a game shop during this time and remember the dual analog and then dual shock being a big deal (the Saturn analog controller much, much less so) at the time, plus all the games that followed that made use of it.  People were nuts for stuff like this back then.  Anything 3D and/or with controller rumble was huge.

Analog controls in some games were also a thing before Sony's controllers.  Namco released their Negcon controller in 1995 and a number non-Namco racing games were compatible with it, plus the Ace Combat games and Tempest X3.

That reminds me- Rally Cross was another popular Sony title that could have been on the Classic.  :doge  It had 4P split-screen which was rare for the PS1.

4P split-screen got increasingly popular after Rally Cross did it. Some of the more impressive versions of it were Crash Team Racing, Quake II and Sled Storm. A lot of them are like say, Twisted Metal 4 though, where the framerate is only good on like two of the maps.

Funny enough, Rally Cross 2 is only 2-player.

Thinking about it, such a list of B-tier games might have have its perks. I'd be interested in trying several of these games out, for which I wouldn't really want to go through the hassle of getting them on their own legally (or even as ROMs) these days. Yet I might pick them up if they're on such a collection. Certainly not for full price though, we might start talking once this thing goes down to something like 60 - and preferably it should have enough space to be properly hackable. lol if the rumours are true and this will be just as limited as the og NES Mini release, then they can fuck off. SNES Mini though I nowadays see price-reduced in retail stores, so hopefully it's more like that.

A lot of the bigger PS1 games have been rereleased [or are likely to be rereleased at some point], so this does give some new life to decent games from that era that have gotten overlooked in the years since. There's some value to that.

Which would likely be the reason it's not included. Because the PS1 mini is a thing, but the PS1 MultiTap is not a thing, and consumers would have beseeched Sony for instructions on how to play…
