That reminds me- Rally Cross was another popular Sony title that could have been on the Classic.  :doge  It had 4P split-screen which was rare for the PS1.

Which would likely be the reason it's not included. Because the PS1 mini is a thing, but the PS1 MultiTap is not a thing, and consumers would have beseeched Sony for instructions on how to play…

Missed opportunities to have had four ports or a mini multitap and sell extra controllers.  Nintendo will show them how it's done with the N64 Classic Mini.

I have heard some speculation that as these "classic mini" consoles move into the PS1/N64 and forward era that licensing and emulation is playing increasing problems. The NES and SNES have been for all purposes "perfectly" emulated by fans for ages now, let alone Nintendo.

The PS1 and N64 have yet to reach that state with either the fanbase or the companies themselves. Most people forget for example that the PS2's list of PS1 games that "didn't work" with the console increased with every revision of the hardware and certain Slim models can have some serious issues.

Lots was made of the fact that Sony reused the PS1 CPU in the PS2 and while that helped the console was still doing emulation of the GTE on the EE/GS. Games that ignored certain Sony libraries had some of the largest issues. I believe the Slims got rid of the PS1 CPU altogether, and they made revisions to the EE/GS especially after it was made a single chip. This caused backwards compability issues with PS2 titles, the media didn't much care about PS1 backwards compability at that point but it also took hits from this. Even fewer people paid attention to the PS3's situation on this.

I believe Sony's PS1 emulator has been derived from the PSP version they created since they had to emulate everything finally. Much like Dolphin, where you can get better results running the VC versions of N64 games through it than through N64 specific emulators, PSPPP shows similar results running PS1 classics. (I think I saw one of the knowledgeable GAFfers recommend emulating that version of Symphony of the Night over using a PS1 emulator.)

Rainbow Six continues to be the most baffling inclusion of all unless it's some kind of UbiSoft representation thing. If/when the N64 mini comes out the first thing I'm looking for is that console's crappy Rainbow Six port alongside Rayman 2.

why they gotta fuck up one of the GOAT libraries so bad :stahp  When Sony copies something, you'd at least think they'd improve on it a bit. Should have at least been PSN compatible, like the PSTV. Speaking of which, I should've picked one up when those were thrown away for 20 bucks, but I was put off when they killed hacks to remove game-limitations at that time. It's going to annoy me when the narrative is gonna go like "see, this gen is trash", even though it's just the not so well made collection that's the problem.  :-\

Surprised a lot of you guys are meh on Wild Arms. I mean there's definitely better rpgs on the system (an rpg-only PS1 classic would be awesome), but it's still a solid game with fun puzzle dungeons, an amazing soundtrack, and GOAT intro.

But that's my entire point: the N64 ships with four controller ports, it's feasible that two people who each buy their N64 Mini Classic can just use their controllers. This is how the Switch works. In your scenario, SOMEONE has to have the MultiTap.

Everything about appliance construction is doing an ROI on cost-of-goods. I mean, Sony could have just as easily built MultiTap functionality into the base unit. They decided that isn't what the product would be about.

Kotaku says some of the games are the PAL versions  :crazy  Yeah, I'm really better off picking up some of its few hidden gems that I missed via the used market, if they can't even get rid of the 50hz.

The emulator will likely have a simple switch for that. Though it is puzzling that they're using the PAL versions in the first place.

Did they outsource this?

Grabbing an open source emulator over using their own emulator, using only one version of the games across regions, etc. sounds like the kind of things you'd do if you didn't have full access to the resources.

edit: Thinking about it, it could explain using digital only controllers too. I can't imagine the cost savings to Sony being that high considering how long they have produced the Dual Shock and its near identical mold successors. But a third/second party producer might find it far more valuable to shrink the design.

Who is talking about the roms? Lmao

That doesn't negate my point: Nintendo goes out of their way to shutdown rom sites while turning around and selling roms from said rom sites back to you for $50 a pop. What makes them any different from Sony? If anything they're worse because their hardware is probably the same shitty-ass retro-console hardware that forgetting-that-company-that-does-all-in-ones uses. Just without the ability to put the actual 1980's cart into the hardware.

You (and anyone without a brain) should get a clue and skip the middleman and just pirate the goddamn roms, anything from the PSX and earlier can be played on a goddamn toaster now a days.

https://twitter.com/USgamernet/status/1067202420298510336

So Sony can't even be assed to pirate the US versions. Pirates stay winning.

YifanLu (switch hacker and vita/ps4 hacker) said on a stream that it should be as easy as putting in a USB stick and jailbreaking it to be able to run your own games on it.

Apparently they encrypted the files/firmware with a public key or some such, making it super easy to access the OS
