For one thing, it was obvious from the first trailers, Oceans 8 fit right into the Oceans franchise and was just doing a "ladies night" spin on the concept and even reused characters from earlier films, Ghostbusters was a Paul Feig-Melissa McCarthy set of comedy sketches using the Ghostbusters license.

Also way more people care about the Ghostbusters as a franchise and so on. Oceans itself is a remake/reboot franchise.

People care about Captain Marvel for the same reason they did Black Panther, it's part of a multi-billion dollar Disney franchise.

Eh, Ghostbusters is sorta deified in pop culture as "one of the best comedies" so any remake was going to have vocal detractors, and an all female remake was definitely going to rustle some jimmies because misogynists. I'm sure they leaned into it though to help keep the movie in the news cycle. The fact that it turned out bad is hilarious because it validated all those angry nerds and gave brave warriors an uphill battle on the internet to defend it.

Ocean's 11 is just a dumb Clooney movie who cares. Ocean's 8 was about as good as the Clooney one so it's not even controversial in that regard.

If they didn't want the narrative to be "WATCH THIS, AND STICK IT TO THE MRA!" it fucking wouldn't be.

Brie Larsons comments were not "fuck white men", and if a studio wanted an unrelated to the film in question meta-commentary about film reviewers killed, it would have been killed.
