I can't believe "ownership" isn't donating all the remaining money after costs to various progressive charities. They're keeping alt right terrorists like the ACLU alive by not donating to others.
Opportunity to pull out my favorite launch window thread: https://www.resetera.com/threads/resetera-revenue-should-go-back-to-the-community-and-gaming-charity-causes.826/
Quote
NeoGAF was the most popular video game forum. I suspect that era is over now. One of my concerns, and many, many other members' concerns with that forum is how the owner financially managed it. It became user hostile with viglinks, intrusive ads, and hijack your browser mobile ads. More importantly, it was a forum built up of community generated content for free, moderated by unpaid volunteers, all set up for the profit of one single person. This set up disgusted me and I know it disgusted many others.

During the mass exodus, I knew this is our chance as a community to fix the above issue. If the community made the content, the community should be the ones determining how to spend the site revenue. I offered to fund the entirety of Resetera to accomplish this goal, but the current forum owner ignored me. There's a lot going on, I guess.

I understand this forum is new and there's a lot to work out. Perfect. Since we're not on a determined path, I propose all revenue generated by this forum be used to pay for the forum itself, to generate ways to create better content for the community, and send all other revenue toward another, gaming related causes. For example, game development for the underprivileged, the underrepresented minorities and women, Child's Play kind of endeavors, etc.

Granted, yes, the site is new, there's no money, no one's determined anything with money, etc., etc. However, it's important to have this discussion now. We can work toward being a better, more inclusive community. Do you have any thoughts on how the site should spend its generated revenue, if it ever gets to that point?
Quote
I hope the owners pay the moderators at least a little bit.
Quote
I wish they'd allow posters to be monthly contributors.
Quote
In all honesty I’m fine with the operators from the site profiting from it provided they remain transparent and no one person has the authority to shut the place down at any given moment or go power mad “cuz fuck you I paid for it”.
Quote
Could we just start a subscription model instead of ads? I'm happy to pay for this. Love this site already.
Quote
The people who maintain this community (both on the technical side and the moderators) should be given some sort of compensation, imo. The fact that the mods on such an immense site like GAF were being asked to donate their time is absolutely insulting given how much the site was pulling in from ad revenue, and how much that community was shaped by it's moderation. It probably gets complicated with determining who to pay and how much and on what basis do you decide that scale, but I feel like it's something that should be considered if ResetERA maintains it's momentum of users and content creation.
Quote
I also think that if revenue goes towards charities or some cause, it should be focused on fighting against abuse in all its forms -- abuse by the government (donations to the ACLU), abuse towards employees particularly in the games industry, and physical and institutional abuse of women.
Quote
if ResetEra takes NeoGAF's place, the admins no longer need to maintain day jobs, and I'd bet that's the primary reason why we're all here
Quote
I'm fine with them making some money. It won't all to one person and at least they seem like good people who won't ego trip and brag to us about how cool they are.
Quote
I have no problem with people making money.

I do have a problem with just admins/owners getting money while mods don’t get anything. Mods keep the forum in check.
Quote
a reset era podcast
a reset era youtube channel
a reset era news site

and all that money gained from those should go back into making those better. i think it going back into one guys pockets will just end up back where we started.

Jim got screwed over if any of you recall. He was a good dude.
Quote
That said, what do people think of the possibility of setting this up as a non-profit corporation? It undoubtedly serves a public purpose. Donations or contributions would be tax deductible, everyone working on the site could be paid competitive wages, and any profits would be put back into the site for use however the community decides.

Quote
Mods moderate and the community makes the content. Both are important functions. The mods should not be the only ones paid.

Not a mention of fruit baskets in sight.

I was really surprised to discover the mods on gaf were not being reimbursed at all considering the amount of crap they had to put up with, the time they devoted and how much revenue the site was pulling in.
Quote
Not sure tbh. Afaik they weren't paid a salary, but I had always hoped that Evilore at least gave them all a healthy Christmas bonus. A console, some games, something. Evilore made a lot of money, enough to travel the world and not work as he has stated in the past. Mods, or site admins not getting anything always seemed ridiculous to me.

Absolutely fantastic for sure. I'm not surprised this issue hasn't yet been addressed. It's still early. But I figured we should start the conversation now. It's a massive way for us to distinguish our community.

Imagine funding really great gaming investigative journalism. Or a unique indie game. A documentary on a game development. Sending underprivileged kids to game development school. We can do that.

Mods and administrators should be paid a salary. It's a tremendous amount of work to keep a place like this running and moderated, and it's completely unfair to expect people to take on such a commitment without helping them to pay the bills.

Or to put it another way, salaries ensure that we can retain the best admins and moderators. It's an investment in the site, and an important one.

Any profit above that fair salary should go to charity.

What is important, though, is that we decide the direction of this forum. It's community generated content. The revenue shouldn't be used to line the owner's pockets. It should go into a community focused effort.

It would be easier to scale the heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro than to get Cerium to cough up any of that sweet community-generated revenue. Surely there’s someone out there who has learned the hard way.

If this ad revenue estimate is roughly accurate and Cerium takes half or more of what's left after expenses, that's a pretty good gig (especially if you have some more other work by the side). Less so for the others but still...

I imagine GAF generated more by virtue of larger userbase and traffic... Lore maybe made 100k$ gross per year (it was sort of the common wisdom, wasn't it ?). Man he should have sold even for low 7 figures, unless he was cashing even more than that.

it was a pretty open secret that Lore wasn't receiving the seven figure type offers for the site by the end, I think he even admitted it had been a while since somebody made an offer despite the GamePro cover, GameTrailers documentaries, etc.

though he had also been pretty open about not wanting to sell it, and people had been moving on from forums as the center of websites

NeoGAF.com still had good enough traffic that the ads should have been doing well, I mean look at ResetERA.com's views traffic on major gaming threads compared to the ~7000 posters that post everything.

ResetERA.com has a pretty stable niche, even if it's like 1/4th of 2016 NeoGAF.com, everyone just fucked off from GAF when it imploded and you don't really get people coming back from that

On Saturday, the actress, who has since spoken out about her sexuality, reflected on the time she told her parents about dating a woman during the Making Change On and Off the Screen panel at SXSW Conference and Festival.

"I am from Austin, Texas. My dad is out of central casting Texan. Good Southern man, and I was raised in a religious home," she described on the panel, according to People. "And being an outspoken lesbian, atheist, vegetarian, I remember when I told them about my relationship, that I was in love with this woman, and at the beginning of that it was just tears, tears."

According to the actress, her parents "didn't know how to process it because, for them, it was being thrown into a binary system of processing it, negative or positive."

However, over time, her parents' attitude shifted.

"Five years later, I was getting an award, and I asked my parents to drive out to Dallas," Heard recalled. "And I see them sitting front and center and here I am getting this 'gay' award…My parents in five years, look at the journey."

In her words, "Attitudes and hearts can change."

...

While she said she never hid her sexuality from family and friends, Heard also faced pushback from the industry once she went public about it.

"They pointed to no other working romantic lead, no other actress, that was out," she told Allure. "I didn't come out. I was never in. It's limiting, that LGBTQ thing. It served a function as an umbrella for marginalized people to whom rights were being denied, but it loses its efficacy because of the nuanced nature of humanity."

The Aquaman star continued, "As we become more educated and expand the facts of our nature, we keep adding letters. It was a great shield, but now we're stuck behind it. It's so important to resist labels. I don't care how many letters you add. At some point, it's going to spell 'WE ARE HUMAN.'"
good job with the abusive lesbian trope, Amber

Why do people even have knee-jerk reactions like what the fuck is your knee supposed to be doing

It's not about the tendon reflex is it?  Sounds more like suddenly standing up with a jerk

What's a premium web server cost on Azure? 3 grand a year? Double that for load balancing, hell, triple it and you hit 10 grand maybe with a LB in place too?

Cerium rolling in dat dough.

Capitalism works!

Step right up and do the pricing yourself!

a defamation filing with boxes of evidence is overkill to just improve his already superior public opinion in an ongoing divorce case

Not when altering that opinion could save or cost Johnny literally hundreds of millions of dollars.
Your skepticism in Hollywood court fights is warranted, but in this case it's not a typical defamation filing intended to be withdrawn when the fights over, it's an atomic bomb:

See, no need for college to be a accountant for near billionaires.

That's the entire point. Depp sued his financial managers saying they were negligent but then the managers turned around and showed receipts

Allegedly Depp has managed to fritter away almost all of his $650m fortune on sprawling mansions, old guitars, Andy Warhol artworks, designer clothes, luxury cars, private jets, a 40 strong entourage, a cluster of islands in the Bahamas and vintage wine.

“It’s my money. If I want to buy 15,000 cotton balls a day, it’s my thing,” Depp told The Wall Street Journal last year.

everyone waxing poetic about knee-jerk reactions right now is in the middle of a knee-jerk reaction. this "news" is three years old.

get a grip and do the thing you claim to be so good at and wait before jumping to conclusions, seriously. we don't know anything new one way or the other.

Idris Elba should sue for defamation
