The relevant narrative is how ResetERA.com became the reactionaries they probably once claimed to hate. They want to try people as war criminals, make exceptions for the death penalty (something they ban for under less heated circumstances) and use without trial, shut down entire websites and arrest their userbases, arrest anyone who's ever talked to an accused criminal, hold as complicit a moron on YouTube who literally does nothing approaching what they accuse him of because he was mentioned by an accused criminal, tear down an entire company and its employees for "promoting terrorism" for having an ill-advised internet goof, empower the Trump Administration to control Google, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. because these "further terrorism" and every other insane reactionary view that the first decade of this century were supposed to make "never again."

At this point I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing arguments in favor of torture on ResetERA.com. For a Twitch streamer misgendering someone or something.

That's their real ongoing crime. They're irrelevant so caring about their views is the wrong objective. What to care about is that we can't make fun of them and facetiously parody them anymore. They actually get to that point too fast. I had to make the above example so absurd to ensure they don't get there ever that it's not even amusing. And all this while being unable to identify the actual trolls and not paying me anything to run their Mod Admiralty for them.

I'm the real victim here. Can't you all see that?

Alright, benji, if you don't think posting quote-wall after quote-wall of people's reaction to the shooting and saying "lmao at these people" is itself a reaction to the shooting, then go ahead and take offense I guess.

All I'm saying is it's sad, and people are gonna take it poorly. And I don't think posting walls of poor reactions is any nobler than the reactions themselves. I ain't got no beef with you, man. That's just how I see the situation.

It might be worth pointing out reactions like ResetEra's are tied to the motives of the killer who explicitly detailed he is hoping to accelerate things into a Turner Diaries scenario, where liberuls taking muh guns away results in the white race "waking up". Increase racial animosity, increase tension over gun rights. Mass shootings have become so cynical in presentation they are now self-referential and include livestreaming memes. It's gone beyond just hoping to get attention for a personal manifesto or a straight forward vengeance towards girls. These incidents are so absurdly useful for partisan reasons that a killer like this can now use them to hurt his own "cause" to increase polarization in the long term. It was once primarily a gun rights issue, but now it is a Trump and racial (and free speech/open internet) issue. He wants people to get more angry about guns and to be angry about straight-white-males despite those being principles he believes in because he feels society (whites) is too "made into a giant dad" for a race war. This also happens to sometimes be the underlying motive for instances of islamic terrorism, where they simply don't care about blowback in the slightest. To see how we get here, just look at previous ResetEra terror threads where they look on with great anticipation for the race/religion of the shooter. It's like your team winning or losing the big game if it's a radical muslim (right-wing) or 4chan cac (left-wing). ResetEra is a stand in for the whole internet. I could understand why you would find it tacky, but I don't think there is any separating of the cause and reaction in the age of twitch mass-killings.

e: "made into a giant dad" what the hell do these word filters even mean

You're right; the reactions of people to this and other things like this will likely have a lasting impact. How people react does matter. And using RE as a test case for how the extreme left will react may actually be useful. And as Nate said, the reactions on the extreme right are extremely disgusting. The best way to combat an extremist and his plans is not with opposite extremism, but rather with levelheadedness. Unfortunately, I think that's becoming more and more difficult to come by.

Yeah, it all boils down to the most insidious forms of guilt by association. They have embraced it wholeheartedly, and if it were confined to just RE it wouldn't be so bad. But guilt by association seems to have taken root in our culture in ways I never thought possible even 10 years ago.

ResetERA.com is a self-proclaimed left. It's really quite hard to consider them progressive in their social views, or collectivist in their economics. They're mostly reactionaries who lash out at their perceived enemies (which includes all of the member base) first and decide the reasons never. Hence the constant obsession with optics and performative behaviors.

What's most annoying about ResetEra isn't really that they go with their most extreme emotional and irrational reaction, because everyone does that, it is that they immediately mow down anyone who dares tries to complicate that reaction.

I mean just think for a second: was this guy really supporting pewdiepie by shouting his name before committing one of the worst shootings in that nation's history? Do you think white supremacists feel any loyalty to pewdiepie besides "he makes the SJWs and mainstream media mad XD"?

PDP is part of the right-wing media that radicalizes people to become these Nazi fucks. He's a gateway into the bullshit. People usually don't just jump right into the deep end. He's implicitly part of the problem.
Quote
He isn't the only person who perpetuates the rhetoric that killers like this eat up. But he needs to be talked about and held accountable because he has a large audience and a large amount of sway within the world that gamers like ourselves walk in.
Quote
Speaking of Mansons, I guess you feel Charles Manson shouldn't have gone to prison, since he didn't actually murder anyone either.

There are different degrees of responsibilty when it comes to public figures with a lot of power, and to excuse them of any need to take responsibility for the effect their words and actions have on their followers is incredibly naïve at best. Do you really believe CEO's don't have any involvement in the scandals their companies are plagued with?

Imagine being PDP right now. Imagine being a greedy piece of shit leech who's claim to fame is profiting and building an empire off the back of other people's work. Imagine you become so successful that you feel like you can say and do whatever you want. I blame PDP for his contribution here for the same reasons Jim Jones is responsible for what happened at Jonestown, even though his followers "chose" to do what they did.

There's directed, intentional influence along the exact lines of the resulting action, right down to being flippant about mass ethnic killings; PDP is a figure who relishes in his influence over these audiences, and the cult-like following is obvious in any setting where people are critical of him.

This thread shows that we still have such a long way to go. So many obvious assholes making excuses for hate and racism. It's just so depressing. But here's to all in this thread who stood up against the tide of hate and ignorance and complacency. Keep up the fight.

Era cleaning itself from all the long disguised, alt-right tools who can't hold back their true selves. Good.

Also, when is Google going to obliterate this fucking asshole's channel from existence? Ah sorry, let me guess... "Freedom of speech" right?
like the war it is based on, ResetERA.com stands on the frontlines

i seriously can't fucking believe that the staff actually have taken the position that PEWDIEPIE is complicit in a mass murder ala Charles Manson/Jim Jones :neogaf

parody is dead forever, there's really nowhere to go from this, not even watching them tear each other apart over the primaries :dead

no wonder the moderators are losing it:
OFFICIAL STAFF COMMUNICATION
The other threads were locked because they weren't being used to discuss the documentary or Michael Jackson so much as they were being used to take shots at members across threads or try to rile up trouble for the staff. We are looking at rebooting the main thread. We have been working tirelessly under high stress to moderate these topics and have actioned many posters who violated our policies.

If this thread proves unmanageable it'll go the same way as the others, and that serves no one in the end. Get back on topic.

Let that be an actual lesson he understands. Your voice has a huge influence when you have millions of followers. He's been denying that responsibility for too long.
No thank you. Now's not the time for him to somehow "learn". His decisions were intentional and the facts were in front of him. Even today his apology is pathetic. He needs to be deplatformed NOW. There are deaths directly attributed now.

How hard is it for these people to see that their words/social media can carry such a weight.
That would mean actually genuienly empathizing with the struggles of marginalized people.

Anyone actively seeking to conceive in 2019 is either willfully ignorant of the climate crisis that will irrevocably destroy any semblance of global stability within that child’s lifetime, and possibly before that child even reaches adulthood, or they’re just selfish bastards who don’t care.

I truly don’t mean this to be condescending, but I do not know of a single person who is up to date on climate science who believes we will actually pull through it without resorting to magical CCS technology that may never exist. Instead they talk about mitigation, preserving as much of the quality of life to which we are accustomed for as long as we can. Environmental hospice. I mean just last month we learned that stratocumulus clouds will vanish entirely by 2100 and tack another 8 degrees of warming on top of the 4 caused by direct heating alone prior to that event. That does not even account for about a dozen other feedback loops that we know about, to say nothing of the ones we don’t. By the end of the normal lifespan of a child born today, we are on track for a world fundamentally incompatible with human life, full stop.
Ha, and PewDiePie thinks he's going to get away with this!

Hmmm... When does just being a realist get confused with depression. Is it a mental illness to take a look at the state of the planet and our global society and where we are headed and maybe think it might not be the wisest or most moral of choices to bring another resource gobbler into the world... Is that mental illness? I swear half the problems with humanity right now is that we are so blasé about everything and never grasp the impact we have on the world and each other, and so it continues.

And no, my partner and myself don't want kids. We would rather be "selfish" and look after ourselves and give ourselves a good life rather than bring up more kids who struggled like we did in youth, and into a much worse world to boot.
Quote
If I had kids probably they will be fighting for resources and water thanks to the climate change so no thank you.

My wife really wants a kid, and wants one soon. I don't want to make a person who might die of famine in a developed nation in their lifetime.

I'm actually quite glad that so much of that forum will never reproduce, either voluntarily or involuntarily. The less young impressionable minds they get access to the better.
