Cindi, you can just avoid clicking on "Easy Mode" when you start a new game.  ???

Yeah, we gave them that with Ninja Gaiden. Then they said NG2 was too hard so they made Sigma easier. Then NG3 came out and whoops, it's baby town. Same thing happened with SMT. As soon as you give them an easy mode they want a little more. Next they want to take out more signature features tied to franchises. In SMT/Persona it's "game over when MC dies" well they got what they wanted with easy mode now they want that gone too. No. Never give in and don't even appeal to them. Let them suffer, or sell the game. Fuck them.

I don't like anything anymore so I'm just latching on to the few that I do like and I think that's a perfectly normal, human response.

Can you believe Cindi is raging in multiple threads at once about things she could easily ignore and they wouldn't impact her whatsoever?

I think we all can :salute
Why single out Cindi? It's not like anyone else ragging on game journos in here looks any better. :doge

Because she's also doing this about Marvel movies, in the same way where she just keeps repeating she doesn't like it and this thing she can easily ignore she instead fixates on like it actively ruins her enjoyment of things she likes.

Classic Cindi :rejoice

Classic Cindi or classic Cream?

Is the concept of streamlining really an inherently western philosophy? Yeah, I know there were jokes about linearity and stuff with FPS' last gen and stuff, but it just seems like the natural progression of individual games trying to cover more demographics in general. Older games from both east and west were hard as balls because the wider, less adept audience wasn't really taken into account.

I think game journalists being lowkey ableist babies over the lack of difficulty options is another issue entirely.

I'd put in an option for an easy mode that doesn't substantively change anything to prove a point.

nah, you make it exactly the same, but every time you die put in an unskippable cutscene with random phrases like;
"Ohhh buddy, too bad, you were so close!"
"Don't give up, you've almost got this! I believe in you!"
"Keep trying! You'll totally beat them next time!"
etc

I’d put in an easy mode where all the enemies have 1 hp.

Not gonna lie, I would enjoy Souls games more if everything had 1HP (including you) and you played it like fucking Bushido Blade

I think game journalists being lowkey ableist babies over the lack of difficulty options is another issue entirely.

For a long time though, Japanese games were far more resistant to it. Now that they've made the big time again they've greatly dumbed their games down.

It's unfortunate, and you're right. Games dumbing themselves down to rope in more players when games get more expensive is only natural. That doesn't mean that I have to like it.

So this generation I've slowly weaned off modern gaming and resorted to playing retro games pretty much the entire generation. Until Cuphead and Sekiro, there wasn't a single non-fighting game that I didn't find disappointing in some capacity this generation. For me, it's the worst gaming generation of my life time. Even the game series that I like (Persona, DQ, FF) are a shadow of their former selves.

So yeah, I've mostly retreated from modern games for this reason and fully expect to not keep up with or buy modern consoles in the next ten years. I'm not even sure I will be purchasing a ps5 or xbox 10 or whatever it's called. Honestly, the only system maker that still makes games that make me smile and enjoy is Nintendo. I'm just waiting on the new Switch announcements so I can buy one and splurge on what I've missed out on.

A friend told me that there comes a time to learn to accept change so I won't be mad anymore, and it's unfortunately hard. I'm still very much yelling at the clouds.

I think there is a mod for this.

BTW you can do this in Sekiro (with cheat engine).

Like why the fuck are so many people bitchmoaning about Sekiro, a game very deliberately designed to create a certain feel from the bottom up.

I fucking suck at souls games, and like I said upthread, found sekiro way easier to play.
I honestly believe a lot of the bitching isn't because its hard, its that its different enough from souls that people who don't want to change how they fucking play a game are mad because its not Ninja Souls.

I don't want every fucking game to play the same way. Works out for me that I don't like Souls that much that sekiro is different enough that I enjoyed it more.

Another example of a series eventually ruined by adding an easy mode option: Dead Rising. People bitching about how they want to enjoy DR1 but can't because the save system. The next few games take that option out and now the series is dead. Never placate. Never appeal. They can like it, deal with it, or sell it.

I'm kinda with Cindi on this, the article's premise may be seem reasonable and nothing to get upset about but it's all about creating a narrative. It's how it started with Zelda too, Skyward Sword got all good reviews yet all the conversation post-release in the press was about how it was just another tired Zelda game and not Skyrim. So what happens? We get BotW, which while a fantastic open world game, eschews the most important element of what had in my opinion made Zelda games good, mainly the dungeons. No doubt now that they've smelt blood, their next topic will be to hammer Nintendo until they provide Linklette option.

In the first place, I remember how so many members of the gaming press were gloating in their xenophobic glee over the downfall of Japanese games and supremacy of the Western devs at the start of last gen. Now that almost all Western games are generic trash that play like each other while JPN games dominate quality wise again, I doubt the good intention behind their advice.

And don't forget, it was Japan with a series discussed heavily above who streamlined RPG mechanics back in 1986. Try playing the early Wizardry, Ultima, Eternal Dagger, Wasteland... obtuse af where each key does something different and there's barely any direction.

You are being dramatic in response to Kotaku douche being dramatic about it;  it doesn't have to be framed in the context of "begging."  "Hey would be cool if this game had an easy mode."   I fail to see what is pathetic about that.

The pathetic part comes next when this gains traction on reee, Kotaku doesn't shut the fuck up about it, Waypoint and Polygon join in and From Software doesn't bow to demands.

Jason Schrier: "I've spoken to several current and former disabled folks since my article went live, including some I hadn't interviewed earlier. General consensus has been sadness and disappointment at From Software's statement, which read as disheartening to those who hoped for change."

i'm all for streamlining of games.

i remember the mental revelation playing the first dark souls that every enemy (at first at least) required focus and concentration to get past. filler in games is a criminal waste of time and the reason i can sink so much more time into MP games these days is because every moment is at least some demands of me. i don't actually mind walking simulators either because at least they're being honest about it, it's the games where you brainlessly have to mash through hundreds of goons just to get to some vaguely rewarding challenge that are the worst offenders.

i like conceptual streamlining too. nothing is a bigger red flag to me when a dev plays up how many different modes are available. the perfect game has one mode and one map that you never get tired of playing and any expansion on that is just admitting that you what you can't get right with quality you'll have make up for in quantity.

This was about the time the rise of the indie games and Phil Fish being the head asshole of that movement against Japanese games

In the first place people are crazy if they think it'll be all fine if From just lazily puts in an easy option where all they do is give the enemy less hp and make them less powerful. If they don't waste resources to craft a relatively balanced experience that meets a certain standard, all that'll result in is when the journos and the players that can only play it on easy mode get a weak experience they'll review bomb it afterwards. Better to gatekeep and keep the "riff raffs" out. It'll review better because they outlet will have to get a journo that can actually play into the game for couple of hours, and the type of player base that's into these sort of games is more likely to give it good word of mouth.

The guilt-tripping these gaming journos are using to argue for easy modes using disabled gamers as a proxy is some pathetic shit. Can't admit they are outright bad at games moderately harder than modern casual AAA tripe so they use "what about the disabled!" as a shield. And of course, if you try to push back against that, you'll be accused of being "elitist" and "ableist." Throw in some "toxic gamer" and "Gamergate" insinuations for good measure.

Also beating these games is about the only thing most of these dweebs will achieve in their lifetimes. It would be unfair to take that away from them.
