I've recently been feeling depressed and lonely and trying to figure some things out. I'm trying to find a helpful label or group that can define how I'm feeling, but I can't and it makes me feel more lonely.

I was a really sheltered kid, not through any real fault of my parents, but simply because I was the first kid and they didn't know exactly what to do. I had very little exposure to sex growing up. I think I watched maybe three R-rated movies before I was 18. I barely had any understanding of the concept of sex beyond the very clinical explanations provided in sex ed in high school. I've always felt that I was about 3-4 years "behind" everyone else from an emotional development standpoint. I've always been extremely introverted since I was a little kid. I've never had more than one or two friends at a time, and social interaction has always exhausted me. I never had much of a desire to go out and make friends because the act of having to physically sit and talk to people would exhaust me and I just wanted to go home and do quiet activities like draw, write, play video games, or build Lego sets. As I got older, these hobbies never really changed, even as all my peers started hanging out, doing after-school activities, and going on dates. I didn't do any clubs or sports or activities throughout my entire school career, because I hated being around other people and just wanted to be alone.

What has always been confusing for me is my lack of sexual interest in other people. I first started to notice this around my freshman year of high school when my friends would tease me about not dating people, or if I had a crush on this person or that person, and I would always feel genuinely confused because I had absolutely no interest in these things. I do develop feelings for people on rare occasions, but they are usually very strong romantic attachments and never have any kind of sexual desire included. Because the people I always develop these feelings for are women, I've identified as a lesbian for about six years now. But I'm now 27 and I think I can count the entire sum total of every person I've ever felt romantic feelings for on one hand. I'm 27 years old and not only am I a virgin, I've never even been on a date, not because I'm an ugly wretch but because I have next to zero desire to actually seek out relationships with people. I'm so heavily introverted and so agoraphobic that I have no real problem spending all my time by myself. On the very rare occasion that I develop feelings for someone, it's usually because the person closely fits myself; otherwise I'm extremely picky with who I choose to spend time around. I don't feel like I'm missing out, and I never have, even in high school when everyone around me was actively thirsting for dates and sex all the time.

Now, after reading this you might come to the conclusion that I'm obviously asexual, and probably borderline aromantic. But what has always stopped me from identifying this way, and has always left me feeling estranged from any kinship with the asexual identity community, is that I do experience sexual thoughts and feelings, but never involving my actual self. I've long been a part of online fandoms and have been an active participant in reading and writing romantic and sexual fanfiction, yet I feel little to no interest in doing these things myself in real life. I experience sexual fantasies or ideas, probably on as regular a basis as anyone else, but they always involve fictitious or hypothetical people and scenarios, never myself. Asexual people often describe not feeling sexual attraction to anyone, but this doesn't properly describe my experience.

A while back I discovered a term that has been growing in popularity within the asexual community called "aegosexuality," sometimes called "autochorissexuality" or a few other complex names. This term seems to perfectly match how I feel, based on this common definition: Aegosexual people feel a disconnection between oneself and a sexual target/object of arousal; may involve sexual fantasies, or arousal in response to erotica or pornography, but lacking any desire to be a participant in the sexual activities therein. Common traits of people who identify this way include:

    Get aroused by sexual content but not actually want to engage in any sexual activities.
    Masturbate, but are neutral or repulsed by the idea of having sex with another person.
    Fantasise about sex, but envision people other than themselves, and/or view it in third person, as though they're watching it on TV, rather than imagining it in first person, through their own eyes.
    Predominantly or entirely fantasise about fictional characters or celebrities, rather than people in real life they know.
    Identify as asexual and feel no sexual attraction to people, but enjoy masturbating, be aroused by sexually explicit content, and/or have sexual fantasies.

These basically perfectly describe myself, but I don't feel comfortable describing myself this way because I don't know for sure, I guess? I can't tell if I'm legitimately asexual, if "aegosexuality" is actually a thing, if it fits me, or if I just have some weird sexual hang-up caused by decades of severe introversion and social anxiety that might be fixed by the right person. I can't tell if I'm asexual, aromantic, or just "scared" of romance and sex. I have no problem enjoying romantic and sexual content as long as I'm not the participant, but the thought of me doing these things scares me. I'm constantly lonely, but I can never find the right person(s) to spend time with, either platonically or romantically. All of this just confuses the shit out of me and leaves me feeling stupid and alone.
