It's all part of the white supremacist radicalism that funnels those particularly extreme into these less moderated "free speech" corners of the internet. It starts on YouTube and Twitch and 4chan is just a step in the chain tbh.

YouTube has done more to spread White Supremacist terrorism than 4chan  :idont

well the second shooter from info gathered asked his sister and mum to bang him, had a history of making hit lists and had a lot of issues with bulling girls, identified as left, probably male feminist.

But now there's a laser focused on the alt right one earlier in the day. Why isn't the conversation more about how did these clearly mentally ill people gain access to guns? Instead of oh well they got radicalized by XYZ.

Yeah I can see why there would be a larger concern that actually the racially motivated attacks of smaller and larger scale have really escalated in frequency lately and absolutely needs to be dealt with.

Shitposting aside, i don't see how it "starts" on Youtube and Twitch, they're also steps in a chain, that probably loops into itself.
I'm not claiming these online communities aren't responsible in some (significant) part, but i'd argue being sensitive to that type of conditioning in the first place, is a problem that arises outside of the internet.

Again, why are we even giving merit to the ideals of these mass shooters? These are mental children. It's irrelevant to why it happened.

Didn't we learn the lessons from the past? When they tried to blame mass shootings on the entertainment they consumed. It didn't matter what music they listened to, what movies they watched, what video games they played.

I feel like this is the loop people are stuck in which lets them ignore that our society completely ignores the mental health of men 18-24 and ALSO let's them have easy access to guns.

There were 2 OTHER potential mass shootings that were prevented last week, (with males of that same age group) and it had nothing to do with politics/race or whatever.

It's kind of what i'm saying, a catalyst for rage it's just that in the end, the goal is to hurt people and lash out.
That said, the communities that let these type of mental wounds fester, aren't just randomly themed, these are the same thematics we've been dealing with since forever: Xenophobia, sexual/social inadequacy etc etc.

We can identify vectors for violent outbursts WHILE ALSO attempting to solve the overall problem of young male violence.

This kind of racially motivated violence IS on the rise, shutting down 8chan may or may not help, but it certainly won't hurt. Pushing YouTube to fix the algorithm that funneling vulnerable white boys toward the rhetoric of violence won't hurt either. Pushing Facebook to take a stand against memes that call for racial violence won't hurt either.

We shouldn't ignore people taking advantage of vulnerable white boys in favor of finding out why they're so vulnerable in the first place, we should do both.

Fucking duh.

Edit:

Also we clearly need to do something about the easy access of guns.

You're the one mentioning Youtube and Twitch as the start of the chain.  :yeshrug

I wouldn't argue against Youtube "fixing their algorithm" (whatever that means, in practical terms), i just see it as a step in the radicalization chain, is all.

EDIT: But yes, in general i agree with the idea that you can address as many "links" in the chain as you wish, at the same time.
And if we're talking priorities, i seriously cannot see how gun control isn't number 1, when the vast majority of these incidents all take place in the same country (whereas Youtube and such, are international platforms).

The problem is that a lot of the stuff you want regulated in social media has the danger of being done half assed. You Tube has an algorithm problem but they are more interested in controlling 4 seconds uses of copyright music...

Assholes hide behind “Free Speech” to spout idiotic vile shit but the people interested in controlling this are also interested in regulating it in a draconian way. How many assholes at RE said that “we should be like China about the internet” with a straight face?

Online, ya 100% it starts on these massive and poorly regulated social media sites. There are a lot of rabbit holes but they pretty much all lead to the same places which hide hateful ideology behind "free speech" bullshit.

I don't give a shit if they shut down 8chan (i can't even access it from my ISP)  ???

The argument for fixing big social media platform is also good in theory, but i don't think it's that simple as just fixing the algorithm.
Unless you want to apply a carpet ban on every right-wing/libertarian type channel, i don't see the line bwteen radicalizing and safe expression of ideas, as a crystal clear one.

Especially if we agree that a relatively normal person doesn't just stumble on a place like /pol/ and turns into Hitler Youth overnight.

Also The Bore:  Even though literal mass murderers post on and are cheered at 8chan, you shouldn't shut it down.

plz dnt take too srsly

I mean, unless literally everything posted on 8chan is an incitement to violence, thats whats known on resetterra ban messages as a false equivalence

The algorithm fix and other measures that they will propose will in a single swoop destroy the free internet as we know it.
- A crackdown on copyrighted material
- A crackdown on what they consider 'hatred' and 'violence'
- Anything related to porn
- Anything outside of 'mainstream' political positions
- Anything that might endanger the state or the populace
- A crackdown on alternative news sources

And as we know from how celebrities are hunted by decade old Tweets this will retroactively include your entire post history.

All these systems are already in place and developed by the likes of Facebook and Twitter and used in various ways (UK: porn credit card gate, China: wholesale censorship, Russia: feeding real-time info to the intelligence agencies).
We only needed a catalyst for it to be implemented on a much wider scale on all the major platforms and this might've been the magic bullet that does it.

Imagine just how much money the big internet platforms will save when they don't need moderators to weed through 'flagged' social-media posts manually but they can just blanket ban things.

Sure. But my concern is the solutions for that problem becomes where you turn the government into the babysitter of the internet (and all related social interactions). Where children are being put on watch lists at the age of 14 and being monitored the rest of their life. It's that dystopic reality I always feared.

Maybe I'm just being naive in thinking that we can stem that from happening completely and should just resign myself that it is inevitable and trying to fight it is pointless.

It's not totally alien to our history. Is there a significant difference from an FBI agent sitting outside (or inside) a KKK meeting or some other fringe group and taking notes versus someone in a data center doing the same thing on a message board? Not really.

alternatively: yes I'm sure big internet platforms will save SO MUCH MONEY by blanket banning over half their usebase

They just happen to be less frequent and less deadly as well  :thinking

Probably a coincidence, nothing to do with restrictive gun laws.

Well of course. I'm all for harsh gun laws, fuck the NRA and gun nuts.
