I guess MatPat hit too close to home? Or maybe some of them have a bit of a guilty conscious for engaging in cancel culture that lead to recent suicides. It is also strange how they swear cancel culture doesn't exist, and it is just rightwing fiction.

What the hell is an incident manager?

But for Den Kovacs, a video games journalist and KonMari disciple, Kondo — with her gentle, judgment-free encouragement — is a welcome antidote to harsh reality TV, not to mention American chaos.

“People really do feel ... chaotic, they feel overwhelmed,” said the 23-year-old from Livonia, Michigan. “So when they see someone who comes in, and she’s like, ‘I can fix this! We got this!’ ... people are like ‘Yes, I need this in my life.’”

Social media users have already reported a “Kondo effect” at local thrift stores, with more goods pouring in for resale — although a national spokesperson for Goodwill said it is “too soon to tell.”

Hobbes murdering people in the digital realm.
Quote

And in the digital age, it turns out even email inboxes and social media friends can be “KonMaried”.

“I just went down the [Facebook] list and asked myself, ‘Does this person spark joy?’,” Kovacs said.

“As soon as you start to ask that about someone, you suddenly realise the people that add value to you,” he said.

“You certainly appreciate them a lot more than you did before.”

Hypothetically if a person were to lead an effort to digitally "cancel" someone in the analog, the "cancelled" person probably did something to deserve it, like draw a cartoon which could be interpreted as Trumpian propaganda.

The silly behaviour of op and others refusing to look at context, hell-bent on their initial outraged takes is amusingly what a significant part of the artist's work is about. it's incredible.

Dude is gonna get got for "dismissing concerns surrounding transphobia".  :doge

Quote
Context isn't fully absolving. People have flaws and shortcomings, and an ally in most cases can disregard humanity in others. I'm willing to chalk this up to a poorly thoughtout comic, but this weird rhetoric that the artist couldn't possibly be transphobic because he's made positive comics in the past is equally short-sighted.

He might still be transphobic despite making comics specifically against transphobia!!

Who was the guy that didn't rape a women and Sugar Noodles was adamant that just because he didn't rape that one girl  it didn't mean he hadn't raped scores of others?  It's just another example of "actually, the worst assumption is wrong.  In fact it's the opposite," and yet Era gets mad that there is one less bigot in the world.

Is it really worse to admit you are wrong and the person you were wrong to presume a racist is actually nice?  Oh Gawd, the world isn't as shitty as I assumed, how awful!

Unironic use of the term "cancel culture" is just about as side-eye-inducing as unironic use of "SJW".

I mean, sure, in the sense that the people who think those terms are "suspicious" are probably the same people those terms were invented to mock, but when brooklyn 99 is making snowflake college intellectual giant dad jokes, your little culture war terms have entered the wider mainstream consciousness, and like it or not, people who DGAF about your stupid twitter bullshit know what kind of person and what kind of behaviours SJW is a pejorative for.

Following on from what I was speculating about earlier, I think there has actually been a quiet change in moderation policy at REEEE. Seems like there are less bans being handed out the last few days.

I may be completely wrong and it could be just because there is a lull in the controversial topics, or it could be that all of the sane people have abandoned ship.

I don't yet have any hard evidence to back it up, but I do think there has been a policy shift.

When every thought and feeling is 100% validated through your carefully curated in group, it can be hard to hear that your perception of reality is maybe not the actual reality. I wonder if they stopped getting so fucking triggered by EVERYTHING if they'd be happier individuals.

But again I think that a good part of their happiness is derived from being the victim.
as kara said a lot of times when you read french theory your knee-jerk reaction is "what the hell are you talking about you idiot" but in reee's case i think the concept of jouissance nails the bolded

i think part of the ERA puritanical push comes from the fact they simply don't have real friends.

i'm not talking about colleagues or similar people you meet through common interests, i'm talking about the lifers that you somehow got lumped in with through school or simple proximity and have a relationship based purely on shared experiences, rather than picking the correct friends from some social pantone chart.

if there was it should be reflected in the ban site in the coming weeks

the main thing I wonder is, when do you get to the point of realizing multiple 1-7 day bans don't really silence the viewpoints you don't want to see, so either you step up the perms or lay off of it and see what happens

I think you'll end up seeing a lot more threads closed for not being productive :doge because it prevents further posts that might be deserving of bans

ban the discussion instead of the people

that's why there's been a lot more meta around "uh can you clarify exactly what we're allowed to talk about here, you've closed this same John Carmack thread 3 times but now there's a meta-article about it, can we talk about that...?"

Trying to turn someone's suicide into being all about your victimhood is probably not the brightest move. Fair play to him for 'surviving' Alec though.

Also has PTSD become a common condition recently or am I just imagining a lot more people online passing themselves off as being afflicted by it? According to him he's barely met the guy in real life, if interacting with him mostly through text online was all it took to give him PTSD then I don't think it's quite fair blaming it on the dead guy.

PTSD has become a catch-all for someone made fun of you on the internet and it hurt your feelings. I have a trans coworker that requested extra work from home days for it even though we have multiple combat vets in our office including one that survived an ied attack, total zoomer move.

Quote
Honestly I don't think the intent matters that much here. The comic on its own reads as incredibly transphobic. It reads like the joke is trans people run from "the truth" and go into a safe space to make up their own truth. The artist's intent being something different or having made other comics that are more progressive or even critical of transphobia doesn't really change that.

In the end it's still just as harmful as if the reading people have was the intended reading.
Quote
When in the end people think the characters are meant to represent trans people, then yeah, it doesn't matter. Trans people are still hurt by it. Transphobes are still making fun of trans people for being hurt by it. Hell, the latter actually feel more validated to make fun of trans people offended by this because of there being reason to believe the intent may not be transphobic.

Meanwhile people who don't care give them even more validation as they join in on saying people are just outraged. (For example: literally the post above this one) As if the only ones who get mad are other cis people who aren't actually affected. Shit like this does actually affect transgender people, we constantly see jokes like the original comic except intentionally aimed at us. And seeing that so often feels pretty terrible.

An accidental wound is still a wound.

"Possibly misinterpreted" should be the default end on any topic-title these days.
My fucking god, yes it should.

Do your research people, seriously. How the hell do you manage to go through life when you’re IMMEDIATELY offended by everything? It’s become incredibly frustrating to see all these threads pop up here. Threads exactly like this one, where at the end there’s been a mistake, or it wasn’t that bad after all.

There’s nothing fun about browsing off-topic most of the time, and even gaming is infested with people being outraged.

It’s frustrating and exhausting, and frankly: this place fucking sucks now, because of you sensitive pieces of shit.

And IDGAF being banned because of this: you have all ruined everything that made this place fun. Maybe you’ll see it one day.

The old place is a cesspool, but this isn’t any better. The first few months were great. It’s sad that it didn’t stay that way.
Quote
this thread should be used as evidence that people should be taught like, ANY degree of media literacy. it's very, very easy to read that first comic as transphobic. I would say that it's the easiest possible interpretation. Context from OTHER comics by the same artist does nothing to make this comic in isolation not transphobic, regardless of intent. Especially when that other context isn't provided.

Also all of this.

Cishets, please, for the love of god, listen to trans people. You only need to look at the replies to the tweet to see that this is harmful.

nah this is what people want now

we're way past the point of respecting the dead or not flinging shit at them less than a week after death

right now everyone online is reaching around like "we did the right thing in targeting this guy, right?  the system has failed us so it's ok to drive people to suicide right?" and they get so much validation when people post "yes my son, see he was a bad person, you were correct and blameless"

I don't yet have any hard evidence to back it up, but I do think there has been a policy shift.

if there was it should be reflected in the ban site in the coming weeks

the main thing I wonder is, when do you get to the point of realizing multiple 1-7 day bans don't really silence the viewpoints you don't want to see, so either you step up the perms or lay off of it and see what happens

I agree with you. They are locking more threads and more people are waking up to it.

I'm also working on the theory that the policy change is that they are really only banning for the meta commentary and mod criticism and that we will see less and less of the history of history and bigotry stuff.

So it's not just me who thinks it's a bit insensitive to claim he 'survived' Alec when he didn't experience physical abuse (unless I missed that part somewhere). Particularly when it's about a situation where someone literally didn't survive

obviously that had to be posted online for all to see RIGHT NOW. cause if i give any time to respect a dead person there's a chance people might have moved on and i won't be able to grab more attention for myself :ego
