My partner and I adopted a 10 year old cat over a year ago. She’s a cute, vocal black cat named Tuna. My partner is very much a vet person and adores our cat, but back in May she took Tuna in for a check up with bloodwork and whatnot. The blood work showed some concerning signs. Based off the results, Tuna had abnormally high liver enzyme values. The vet wasn’t sure of the cause, bacterial or not, so they started a plan to treat it with various approaches to see if anything works. Tuna had an ultrasound and was prescribed antibiotics first- nothing changed. Tuna was then prescribed steroid pills- this apparently made things worse. So they recommended we see a specialist. My partner got back from the specialist in tears, because the process to treat whatever this is is so expensive. The specialist wants to do a surgical biopsy to gain more information which supposedly will cost $4-5k, then the treatment will start. I’m not sure how much treatment will be, or what we have to do. We don’t fully know what’s wrong and how extensive this issue is, our cat doesn’t show any signs of distress- she hasn’t acted abnormal in anyway since this diagnoses.
My partner has enough debt right now she has to pay off, but hates weighing her financial health against the life of her cat. I’m in school right now, living off of savings and subsidies, working part time.
This could damage us in the long term financially, but it’s a tough situation to be in. We were aware that there may be medical problems down the line, but we thought it might be a couple years before anything serious might have come up, which would allow for some time to save up money.

What are your thoughts?

TBH that is pretty ridiculous to charge someone $4-5K plus more for "treatment" for something that hasn't even been diagnosed yet on a 11 year old cat that is showing no signs of distress.   There have been some dumb pet threads on GAF/REE but I have sympathy for the OP on this one.  A lot of the responses are totally uncalled for and show why their only companion is a dog or cat, and even those probably wouldn't hesitate to shit in their dumbass owner's shoes.

Yeah I can agree this one probably is more of that sucks, although if the cat is not showing signs of distress and is happy and eating I personally wouldn't be going for more tests until something took a turn for the worse, I do however think there needs to be better teaching for people to say hey you have health insurance (where you need it) so if you're to get an animal why not spend a litle month to month so if something god forbid was to happen to them you're covered. It's just me really, I see so many of these gofundme for pets and I'm like instead of begging constantly why not just insure your animal? I mean especially when half of them start with my service animal or some shit.
