I don't really understand the "I feel nothing, they're not real" reasoning. Characters in film, TV and literature are not real, either. Do you never feel anything when consuming fiction?

 

Generally speaking, fiction is about building and get people feel something for fictional characters or events. Most people are not going to automatically feel sorry for a bunch of pixels just because. Not everyone is so hyper sensitive...

Personally, I don't like it and hate it when a game forces me to do it. I was playing Dragon's Dogma recently and it annoyed me that I basically had to kill every wolf and bat I came across. First because I don't like killing animals and second because they give so little xp that killing them is a waste of time. Attacking people in games is different because they're generally villains, although I do have a problem with murder simulators like nu Tomb Raider.
