This is the logical outcome of years of advocacy for deplatforming by western journalists.
No, it's the logical outcome of doing business in China.

It's only a matter of time until a privatized social credit scoring system comes to the west.
This is tinfoil hat nonsense by and large, but I'll play.

What I see coming instead, somewhat serious about this, are 'incentives' for better living from insureance companies. Sign up to have your lifestyle monitored for reduced rates. Misbehave? (Smoke, sedentary, etc.) Pay more. Everyone who doesn't sign up pays more by default.

having worked for a credit information company that is already experimenting with scraping every bit of information on the internet and trying to connect it with individuals, i can tell you that you are severely misinformed.

I've never had a credit card or taken out a loan, so I don't really care about credit scores, but social credit is just evil. It's like they're trying to recreate Burakumin through technology. I don't know how anyone could ever think it's a good idea unless they have evil in the heart.

There have been a number of articles about this over the years (rewards/discounts for wearing health trackers, concerns of internet use determining metrics (WSJ mirror, few admitting to using such techniques), among other activities) so yeah not all that conspiratorial at this point.

I guess EU citizens got partially saved by the GDPR - i have no idea about the current status on the AI projects we had running, but yeah - it's definitely not tinfoil stuff.
And i reckon google and the likes were country miles ahead of us already. But we already had all the hard data collected from government sources that google probably doesn't have, which makes it extra "scary" if you manage to connect it with the soft data google excels at.

blizzard's involvement matters in that it's what got gamers to notice and take action but jesus christ that better not be both the start and the end of it

imagine if china leadership wises up and says "ok unban the guy and give him his prize money and apologize" "but sir!" "just do it"

gamers say "good, finally  :hmph" and robble robble for a few more days and suddenly forget about the fucking hong kong crisis
Video games are already considered a hazardous substance in China. They'd rather ban the entire industry than break fucking national policy.
is this true? like, there's a gov document saying something to this effect in public domain?

I know/suspect that everybody's collecting everything they can, but we're talking social credit here.
Unless you're trying to tell me that they're doing this to prevent you from traveling abroad, or deny you access to institutions of higher learning based on what you may have said about the state online. That's the tinfoil portion.

It's a private company, they did it do make money, and they will want to apply it everywhere they can make money doing it. This seems obvious, no?
And in the context of western governments ceding control of the public space to corporations, the tinfoil portion is convincing yourself that what they will want to do is so much more benign than what the chinese already do.

They're going to deny you access to their goods and services at worst, for very familiar reasons, i.e. you can't pay. Anything I can imagine beyond this presumes our societies will develop into cyberpunk-like dystopias. I'm not the most optimistic person, but I don't see it get that bad.

I have mentioned insurance companies before though, and that's where I see the most sinister effects right around the corner. Wear a health tracker for reduced rates. It's a great deal and totally a good idea. You're fit, right? ...Right?!

There’s no emptiness in his life…everything around you brings increase upon increase, producing fruit and profit. I cannot even tell you what a pleasure it is. And not because the money’s growing…but because all this is your handiwork; because you see yourself being the cause and creator of it all, how from you, as from some sort of magician, abundance and good pour out on everything….Here, precisely here, man imitates God.”

So people are almost certain Overwatch 2 will be announced at Blizzcon?

Probably a trailer or something. Probably a single player focused announcement? Overwatch 2 is such a weird thing to think about... this isn't like a Team Fortress 2 situation.

Most talk seems to be around Diablo 4 and a WoW expansion. OW2 and a single player expansion are being talked about as both separate things and sometimes as the same thing so not sure on that one.

I honestly hate tip culture. Servers should be paid a normal amount and tipping be OPTIONAL. The fact its okay to pay them less than the minimum is beyond fucked and the fact you push the cost onto the customer is insane. A tip should be a BONUS to a good job. Not a mandatory "social" extra that you feel obligated to do because that person isn't even being paid decently. Its fucking stupid.

And for that matter, the big fish to fry here is Blizzard, an american company, for going directly against the basic rights espoused in our constitution in a public display to appease another country's authoritarian regime because they value profits more than the upholding of said values, humiliating not only our national image further than what it already is but also demonstrating how enthralled they are to an outside power.

Tipping sounds like a stupid way to incentivize good service, because the best waiters are the ones who don't pester you every 5 seconds, asking if everything is ok.
But then why would you tip them an extra, if all they have to do is interact with you as little as possible?  :doge
It's a catch 22, and the only answer is trays on the back of trained dogs, which you can "tip" with dog biscuits.

I don't think that's what people were saying and reacting with a couple weeks ago. You should know, you were very vocal against this movie.
A few people outright made censorship arguments; I should know because I directly argued with them. However, many more were trying to get people who had problems with the themes of the movie to lean in that direction of being characterised as being pro-censorship with loaded questions like "So what is the solution?" or "Should artists not create interesting art?" Like that shit was at all slick.

Indeed, I was vocal, but moreso against people trying to turn this film into a nerd culture war battleground in the vain of Gamergate simply because Joker is a damn comic book film. I'm more interested in reminding people that they weren't entirely vindicated just because a mass shooting didn't happen, as if anyone on this anti-gun forum actually wanted that to happen. What essentially happened- from my perspective- is that an impenetrable echo chamber formed wherein any criticism of the movie was immediately likened to hysterical moral panic, shutting down discussion and putting people in the position of having to dodge actual accusations of character, and subsequently positioning people who were defending the movie as being in a moral right.

Ie, a culture war. Over a fuckin' comic book movie.
Todd was right that the left can look like the far right when it comes to media that is controversial, but not in the way he intended at all.

I've already seen eyebrow-raising takes and dismissals towards negative readings of the film's themes that are indistinguishable from that disingenuous apolitical gamer rhetoric right in the confines of this very forum.

If they don't do it themselves, there's still a non-zero chance that fans excited about a good DC movie will lay that groundwork. Happened with Ghostbusters, and I wasn't fooling myself that it ever wouldn't happen again.

Or maybe nerds will surprise me and prove me wrong. I would like that.

Hey, I'm just trying to 'stop' this comic book film being used in a culture war by pre-emptively declaring its been co-opted by the 'other side' and that there is a 'non-zero' chance it will try and exploit unrelated fans.

Look at me not using this alt-right incel apologist film as kulturkampf! Also, for no fucking reason, remember GHOSTBUSTERS 2016?
