I also hang around translators, both professional ones and fan ones, and read a lot about what they talk about. On top of this, I'm a professional in the Anime industry who has proofed subtitles before and I can sniff out a lot of times where lines 'feel' translated because a lot of the time it's the result of idioms or sentence structure impacting the way a line becomes written. I fully appreciate the deep and vital importance of nuance when it comes to translation between languages.

I am Eritrean. I am not African American, even though I do live in America. There are differences between my life and background from those that are African American. Me acknowledging those difference does not mean I’m “not black”. And sometimes those differences can be meaningful depending on the context. And when it comes to transgender/cisgender, it’s not only meaningful in the hospital. I’m saying all this 100% with the mindset that this isn’t about separating transgender women or men as being “others”. It is frustrating when you get put on blast for not saying what the crowd is saying verbatim, even if others are being disgusting towards transgender people.

I feel like the very fact that every thread about trans people on this forum turns into an insane clusterfuck is maybe evidence that the problem isn’t that we’re not nice enough to transphobic cis people

Without fail, these threads become places for people to tell trans people why they’re wrong for being upset. Transphobia is alive and well and we’re told to put up with it for reason after reason. We’re told that we’re the ones who should educate, and when that fails we’re the ones who should be less sensitive. People invariably jump on a simple mantra like “trans women are women and trans men are men” to slap on whatever asterisks they feel are appropriate, and we‘re forced to argue in favor of our existences yet again. And the process repeats each and every time a new trans-related thread pops up. It’s exhausting.

And once again a thread about trans issues turns into Era’s Trans community having to play defense and validation on multiple points that don’t even have anything to do with the original point of the thread.
