Movies legit, I give it 5 out of 5 mass shootings

I can't believe the dude who made the Hangover flicks actually pulled off a brutal dark comedy starring the Joker

I'm interested in reading the script. I feel like Todd Phillips was the wrong choice to direct it after seeing it tonight, and that it was largely saved by Phoenix's performance.

Ultimately it's going to be part of the Clockwork Orange, Falling Down, and Fight Club slice of cinema/storytelling where people are too fucking meatheaded to grok what was actually attempting to be conveyed, but that's what happens in a world full of fillers.

I feel as though a lot of the complaints levied against the film on Gotham championing Arthur can be answered by placing it squarely on his delusions of grandeur. I believe, even the parts that aren't obviously cut straight from his delusions, are still tainted by an unreliable narrator of sorts. With that said, If you're walking away from this fist pumping over the chaos the Joker caused, you're of the ilk that loves the Walter Whites of cinema. A trash fire of a person.

I watched the movie and all the alt-right themes that they are desperate to write about are actually not in there.

In fact if you want to make an analogy the movie has more strong left wing messaging. Such as the decline of the welfare state and social programs.

I was getting at this earlier. Its an interesting balance because the death of the welfare capitalist state is the material fuel for the unrest in the movie, but it's counterbalanced by portraying the movement in question as a group of revanchist bloodthirsty lumpen criminals getting behind a terrorist with no moral compass. The rich and powerful elites are portrayed as corrupt, but the legitimacy of the movement is undermined by it's spiritual leadership in the Joker and even it's name. They are not even interested in a set of demands other than to murder and burn the Winners in society.

It's sort of an enlightened centrist big brain movie on some level. In this view nobody has a coherent / defensible political position or theory of justice and Humans Are All Shit.

Movie is Bernie Sanders’ Fahrenheit 911

I'm surprised it's doing as well as it is and audience rated so highly, the vibe exiting the theater was somber and seemed like a lot of people didn't like it

I give Joker 3 incels out of 4. Rise up!
All the hoopla around the movie going to be a rallying call of all inept morons in the world. Heh. If this had nothing to do with comics at all, nobody would think that at all.
Also, this movie is not a good flick for anyone under 17. Couldn't imagine seeing this surrounded by a bunch of high schoolers. Not because it's too deep or anything. The pace and tone makes it a total non-popcorn muncher that I could see younger audiences view lame or boring. That or making fun of Joaquin for being as vulnerable as he has ever been at taking on a character that's way out there.

Saw it today.

No lie: We're about halfway through the movie, near the part where things sort of disintegrate for Arthur. And the movie stops.

The fire alarm comes up and I'm thinking, "Holy shit, the incels are rising up."

We exit, calmly, and it turns out the entire building, a multilevel complex, is being evacuated. I don't think there was any violence or anything, but there may have been a real fire. I just caught the bus home and certainly haven't seen anything on the news.

Am debating whether to return to the theater later this week to watch the rest of the movie...

???

You get free tickets and more for sticking around.

Should've stayed and watched the insurrection.

It was raining and I am a snowflake. Plus, you know the line to get refunds would take longer to navigate than it would to watch the movie from the beginning.

I'll return with my ticket stub and righteous indignation at some later date.

Finally saw it - good film. Yeah sure the messaging is thinly veiled and problematic to a degree but as a film its well made, well acted and very immersive.

+:
- J Phoenix is superb
- Great world building, I liked the filthy Gotham City presented here

-:
- "we live in a society" blowback etc
- song cues really suck and broke my immersion every time

There's an early copy of the script on the internet, but apparently Phillips and Phoenix rewrote a lot of it on the set. I imagine that was mostly dialogue and also some of the aspects like turning scenes into dreams/hallucinations/unclear as I figure these were more straight-forward based on what everyone got riled up about regarding the script's leak. Whole parts of the internet were freaking out over the problematic notions of Arthur's relationship with Sophie and the whole thing never happens. :lol

Gotham the TV series had a similar version of the city, although it also had some aspects taking after Tim Burton like weird time-displaced anachronisms.

I'm sure it wasn't at all intentional, but I found some of the establishing shots of Gotham to be very similar to the ones in the series. That whole New York City/Chicago CGI'd together mashup to create a very urbanized form of outer-bureaus/suburbs. More believable than Nolan's megalopolis form of Gotham I think.

I loved Phantasm, but the Joker only being 69% on RT is highway robbery. As far as live action comic adaptions go... probably the best so far.

It was really good as an origin story that I didn't think the joker needed. Certainly could run as a spin-off comic series (DC comics should bank on it with some proper storytelling)

That's more of an origin story related to Batman. This is pre-batman stuff. There's many years until Bruce is anything
