Day 10 - multiplayer FPS

So I don't really know what I was thinking with this day. Well, no I was thinking exactly what Great Rumbler was thinking, "gee I really like Unreal Tournament music", so why don't I make a day dedicated to multiplayer FPS osts. Except, do most multiplayer FPS games even have a score on their maps nowadays? Seems like a throwback mainly. Off the top of my head I would think about Unreal Tournament games, Quake 3 (my choice for today), Tribes series... and uh. Blanking. I don't think Halo has any music during multi, CoD? Battlefield? Nah, right? What about Titanfall? I'm just not sure. But sure would be nice for music to be front and center for a multiplayer FPS again that's really popular. Trends seem to circle around again so I wouldn't be shocked if 2025 brings some bangers into the multiplayer FPS genre again.

Oh? I never played it. At that time my PC was out of date, and by the time I had something capable I felt like it was too late for me to jump in.

And as I understand it the X360 orange box version was not very well optimized unlike the rest of that incredible package.

Day 11 - 2D game

I don't think I included any Mega Man in the previous challenges. On one hand most of us have heard the key tracks, even if you haven't played a Mega Man game. They are quintessential 8-bit tunes (and post 8-bit too to a lesser degree of common knowledge). Remixed plenty of times, played live in various arrangements. Mega Man music is practically in the overkill category of VGM tunes when it comes to recognizable game music. I'll go with this track. One that in particular lends itself to great remixes

Mega Man 3 - Wily Fortress 3 (I've seen all sorts of names used for this track which sort of makes it slightly hard to find on youtube)

Day 12 - music from a favorite level

I wanted to go with The End from MGS3. The old ass sniper with the parrot. Just an amazing boss battle. That whole game is just *muah*. Favorite in the series. But, that boss fight literally has no music 😂.

So I go with this other level that effing blew my mind the first time around and I still think it's cool as shit.
The fifth colossus from Shadow of the Colossus.

"we gonna grab on to its wing and go airborne? Holy shit holy shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!"

Not sure if the actual track title is correct

Day 14 - music from remake/remaster

It takes some balls to really remake tracks from a game to the point where they seem less like an arrangement as much as they do seem like a new composition or a heavily altered rendition. I sampled like 3 tracks from the Demon's Souls remaster and I wasn't necessarily sure I liked the new takes on the few tracks. Not sure if the original ones can be used in the game (would be cool. I think the Halo games did let you alter between the classic arrangements and the remastered arrangements on the Master Chief Collection).

the track I picked was Maiden in Black. Just on a personal level I find the new rendition to be a bit much. Too much going on in terms of how bombastic it sounds. There's something more "singular person" about the original track. And the whole stop start thing seems so on point that I was a bit confused that it wasn't used for the new rendition. Also, there is some pretty bad audio clipping around 2:12 and 2:20 or so. I listened to this track on 3 different uploads. Not sure if that's just people uploading the same track that maybe is at lower quality, or if the OST is truly compressed to shit and back. I'm not judging the soundtrack as a whole. I think it is cool to fully reimagine it. I just might not think it's as good as the OG possibly. Certainly not in the case of the Maiden in Black track

Demon's Souls - Maiden in Black remake

the OG (which I think is a lot better with more *sigh* soul, lel)

Day 15 - kart racer

Is Mario Kart Wii my favorite? From the MK series I mean. I don't know. But it is the one I played the most. It was a time where me and my one roommate were always down for Mario Kart and we could usually rope one or two more people in. It was the PSWii60 generation which was loooooong so it just became the kart racer of choice for us during that time period. I have loooooots of time logged in on the SNES and the GBA Mario Karts and I think those have some fantastic classic tunes. And Mario Kart 8 with all the real instruments and performances was a huge boon for the series.

But I'll just go with that "good feeling and time in my life" choice and place a MArio Kart Wii track.

Day 17 - music that made you check out a game

For me it's Nier. Game wasn't well received at first. Word of mouth spread that "no no, it's actually great. Just not really ideal for a single review run though so that's why it didn't register with those working on a deadline." That and that one goof at Kotaku who failed at fishing cause he was in the wrong location so he refused to even review it even though the map clearly marked a different spot. *shrug*.
But before the word of mouth started to get really strong I heard several tracks from the OST was like "holy shit this is amazing. Too bad the game ain't too hot". I watched my roommate play a bit. That's right around the time the game sort of got its second breath in the public eye. I would later go on to play it myself.

Day 18 - music from first sequel

Half-Life 2 - Triage at Dawn

Been a little too long since I last played this track so I don't remember when it showed up, but as soon as I heard it on some upload featuring the entire ost, I knew that was the track I wanted from this game.

edit: looking at a quick clip it seems to be when
Quote
This is after Ravenholm when you go through the mines and come out at the train tracks with the snipers. The scene takes place in the building you enter after you can't proceed any further on the tracks.
"Winston's been hit" has been associated with it too as the music plays while an NPC is tending to Winston, but if you type in "winston's been hit" it's evolved into a meme.

Day 20 - game you haven't finished

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

My Gamecube is at my folks place. I'm in the final area (or on my way to it I think). From what I've read the game gets really hard at this point and with a lack of continuity (it's an RPG after all) I feel like it's hard to get back into it. I still want to finish it, but I wish I never read it gets hard now haha. I've been putting it off multiple times I've been back "home" home.

@Tiesto

3D World I was able to finally beat the final level. Not sure  how many tries. Many. maaaannnnyyyyyy. Odyssey the final challenge I still can't beat. Not that I got all the other moons, cause eh it ain't quite the same like getting 120 Stars (or 240) in the Galaxy games since the moons kind of carry a lesser weight and I don't particularly find the motivation to actually get every last moon. But I would love to actually beat the final Odyssey challenge. It kicks my ass though hardcore.

Day 22 - game that got you through a tough time

The summer of 2012 was not the prime time of my life. Entertainment that was helping me out at the time was Katawa Shoujo (game), Crystal Castles (music) and also Max Payne 3. Not that Max Payne 3 was that helpful, but I was playing it at the time and I've used Katawa Shoujo in another list in the past even though I'd say Katawa Shoujo played a much bigger role in making one feel better. Love Katawa Shoujo. But for the sake of music diversity, Max Payne 3 it is.

Echo - Back in 2017 I was able to do the Odyssey level almost flawlessly up to the part where you have to change into the bird with the long beak and propel yourself up the moving platforms. I always overshoot or undershoot, can never time it correctly. Then I die and have to do the whole level again, and that kills my determination. I looked at a guide for the level and it looks like the rest of the level is easy, it's just that one part I cannot manage.

Also with Max Payne 3, my future father in law's best friend was a mocap actor for that game...

Day 21 - Music from an Eastern Composer

I'm gonna do a track from Hiroki Kikuta, who I love for his work on the Mana titles. He uses a lot of unorthodox instruments (gamelan!) and the new agey/world music inspiration sets his games apart from most other RPG soundtracks that employ a classical music/buttrock hybrid. This track is super catchy and gives me nostalgia for my first experience importing games and struggling through them in Japanese:

Day 22 - Game That Got You Through A Tough Time

Around Thanksgiving 2002, my father unexpectedly and suddenly passed away. Of course this was extremely shocking and upsetting... my brother (who lived at home) had a GC and a copy of Sunshine so I played a bunch of that to try and take my mind off things... it's probably my least favorite Mario and the soundtrack was extremely forgettable. But here's something from the game that's relevant to a tough time we're all having:

Day 24 - PSP game

Locoroco was such a fitting PSP game. If you didn't know better you'd think it was a cell phone game from any recent year. I'm not saying that as an insult. More that in some ways back in the mid 2000s it was a little precursor to what handheld games could be instead of trying to just mimic the console experience on the handheld.

Not one to really flaunt the "I am a gamer" cause lord knows how off-putting that can be  :lol. But I have a custom Journey shirt. I think this track would have been ideal for the "final level" day too, but it's ok as I have a different game that sort of is just as fitting as the one I chose here.

The track Apotheosis is a special track that can overfill one with emotion without any context. But those who have played the game will recall what happened to your character just before the great finale (hint: snow and cold). I don't really feel like speculating right now what the final level represents as that seems to be open to interpretation. Either way it brings closure as one does complete their, ehem, journey. But the way it plays out is this insane amount of feeling of being uplifted. Your overfilled with this sense of joy and knowing you are reaching your destination. It's a spectacular conclusion. The track has several little bits that kind of make my ears pique and make my heart jump to really cement that which is playing out. Like the start that abruptly picks up and kick starts you. Then we move on to the kind of main meat of the track as the string instruments get into this backing groove that lays down the foundation for the "leading instruments" if you will. And it just keeps building and building. There is a second transition that comes around 3:15. Still building off of the previous part, but escalating the emotion of elation I suppose? And then the strings get higher and higher and... we shift again. A sort of outro for what just played and a segue into the next and final phase of the track.

To me it's a defining Austin Wintory track. It's one I point to and say "this guy knows what he's doing and has the command to make it come together." What a track, what a game. Nothing but great memories.

Day 28 - music associate with winter

I know I've shared Napple Tale in the past which I think is a notable Dreamcast game for multiple reasons. Let's go with Earthbound though and Snowman. Classic track. Many remixes on the internet, in Smash. Who doesn't like this track?
