Isn't Japan also not testing people at the rate they should be to make the numbers look better?

Our Governor is having a press conference here in two hours. Sounds like restrictions on gatherings of 250 people or more in the Seattle Metro (King, Snohomish and Pierce Counties).

Godspeed, Mr. Gundam.

Thanks, should be fine, but I truly appreciate the positive thoughts and likes. My wife and I were both WFH already so it's not much different. I'm still walking our daughter to school in the morning and then picking her up in the afternoon, but my doctors figured that was fine since it's all outdoors. Was hoping to get one last brewery trip in before surgery, but now that's probably a bad idea. Oh well, definitely first world problems.

My parents are in Australia right now until the day before my surgery visiting family up in Queensland after spending a month in New Zeland, and we're a little worried that they're gonna be stuck over there. Every time Trump announces a press conference we're always afraid he's gonna shut down air travel completely. We're going to need their help watching the kid while I'm in the hospital and a couple weeks after while I'm recovering.
Queensland isn't too bad yet. It's starting to get a little more widespread in Sydney and Melbourne apparently.

They were down in Hobart before flying up to Townsville to see our cousins.

They should be fine.

In Australia
As at 11:00 hrs on 10 March 2020, we have 100 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19), including 3 deaths, in Australia.

54 in New South Wales
12 in Queensland
6 in South Australia
2 in Tasmania
12 in Victoria
4 in Western Australia
10 associated with the Diamond Princess cruise ship

Of the two cases in Tasmania, 1 was in Hobart and the other Launceston (had travelled from Iran).

I don't think any of the cases identified in Queensland so far have been in Townsville which is 1300km from Brisbane where the majority of cases have been.

I'm not worried about them getting it, I'm more worried about Trump freaking out and shutting down international travel into the US. My parents are coming back the day before my surgery and my wife and I will need them here to help with our daughter while I'm in the hospital and recovering at home.

Heard from a friend the national guard is being told to be prepared to shut down SeaTac;  not like they have been ordered yet, but it's a possible plan.

Fuuuck. My parents are gonna get stuck in Australia and my wife is going to lose her mind. She's already pissed they went on this vacation when I had surgery planned.

UWMC where I'm having surgery is placing new rules on visitation. One per patient, and if they leave, they can't come back. Looks like my wife and I are gonna have a week long slumber party.

Washington state banned gatherings of 250 people or more. King County (where Seattle is) is banning gatherings of less than 250 people unless they meet strict health guidelines.

Also, Inslee spoke with Pence this morning and there is going be a federal response that may be similar to what we have in Washington.

Nah. He got infected at a party on Saturday and had no contact with his team. They'll be tested regardless, but that won't be the reason the games would be cancelled.

Watching the game behind closed doors now. Dreadful stuff. Feels like a training match at best.

Sounds like things are going great in Cali:

Quote
In Sacramento, the county health officer announced there would be no more quarantines and minimal tracing to determine how those testing positive for the novel coronavirus contracted the deadly, fast-moving disease. Those with symptoms face only voluntary restrictions for mingling in the community.

“The cat is already out of the bag,” said Peter Beilenson, Sacramento County’s health director. “The community spread has already occurred.”

Quote
“Our detection is so poor that if we detect one [case] we absolutely have a lot more than that,” said Marc Lipsitch, a professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. “We have failed to detect cases to such a degree that there are probably many, many cases that are spreading undetected and the only way to deal with that problem are measures like social distancing that don’t require tracing cases.

What this new phase of fighting the novel coronavirus looks like varies widely as health officials grapple with how to keep people away from one another, a daunting prospect when many Americans are unaware, or skeptical, of the actual risks of the disease. Mixed messages from federal, state and local authorities have confused many about the suggested precautions they should take, said Lipstich and others.

“I don’t think that people are grasping that it’s serious right now,” said Harvard epidemiologist Michael Mina. “And I think right now is our last chance to prevent massive numbers of cases.””

Quote
When authorities urge businesses and governments to delay events like Coachella, as happened Tuesday, it mitigates risks but also hits low-income workers, who are losing jobs, contributing to the chance the nation will slip into a recession.

“In most jobs in this country, you can’t work from a laptop on your couch,” said Adriane Casalotti, the chief of government and public affairs at the National Assn. of County and City Health Officials. “We’re out there asking real people to choose between the public’s health and their own financial well-being — them keeping their jobs. For individual families, this is complicated and messy.”

The disparate realities of mitigation are especially apparent in California, where Gov. Newsom has made it clear counties have the lead in responding to the virus.

Quote
Widespread quarantine measures can’t be sustained, Sisson said, especially for healthcare workers. California is already taxed with a shortage of medical providers, and forcing quarantines on front-line staff is a burden the system can’t bear as the virus spreads.

If counties keep quarantining healthcare workers for potential exposure, “we wouldn’t have any healthcare workers left,” she said.

Sisson added that the county does not have the capacity to continue to trace every contact because it lacks the manpower, even with an offer from the state for additional help.

“Even a handful of cases tested our capacity,” she said.

Casalotti said that in addition to tracing contacts, health officials felt burdened by containment because it required caring for those in isolation — a costly and labor-intensive prospect. Health workers often deliver groceries to keep patients away from busy public spaces where they could transmit the virus, for example.

“It’s hard work to do even when the numbers are in the hundreds,” said John Auerbach, the chief executive of Trust for America’s Health.

But Dr. Stanley Perlman, a microbiologist at the University of Iowa who studies coronaviruses, pointed out that drastic measures in Wuhan seem to have significantly slowed the spread of the virus. China’s massive quarantine was a never-before-seen public health experiment.

“Certainly what they did seems to have worked,” Perlman said.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-03-11/california-steps-back-from-containment-new-york-sends-in-national-guard

Sounds like we're going to have an outbreak and a lot of people are going to die because our healthcare system sucks/the government's response sucks/people are too poor to miss work/businesses aren't going to eat the cost of shutting down.

Jealous of y'all working from home. Our office is just not equipped for that, we're still in the paper age and never got digital like some law firms. And there's a lot of constant people talking to each other on the staff level, so nothing gets done if people are out. I get yelled at when I try to work from home :|

We're getting more and more cases here in OC, but no one is staying home yet. I drove to LA and back this morning and the freeway traffic was way lighter than I'm used to. Everyone I talked to in LA said a lot of people were already doing WFH so less people commuting and LA traffic is actually bearable. OC traffic still the same.

oh and since SF is cancelling gatherings over 1000 and Washington over 250, my horror group is set to go to midsummer scream in the summer in Long Beach Convention Center. Has about 30,000 attendees and it smells like normal nerds who do not have hygiene smell.

I'm not planning on going, but I'm guessing it'll get delayed/cancelled. Seems kinda crazy not too.

Seattle Public Schools closing for two weeks starting tomorrow. Gonna pick up my daughter in a little while.

We're also learning that my wife will likely not be able to stay with me or visit me while I'm recovering after my surgery. The wording is that she can be in the hospital during the surgery, she can see me once I'm done but then she has to leave. 5-7 days by myself in the cardiac ICU. Fuuuuck.
