Nobody deserves to die, and I didn't say anyone did, but this has exposed so many broken elements of American society. We have an entire channel that's downplaying it and calling it a liberal conspiracy. So yes, America deserves what happens next. Does anyone deserves to die? No. But when you have mass social failure like this, it's time to look in the mirror.

looking over the news about the younger patients being admitted too
I think it becomes a case of basic stats where if the denominator becomes so large even a low probability results in a large number

the youth are undertested base off of SK numbers, therefore there is likely a huge number of youth infected and based off social media feel no qualms about distancing are going to propagate things crazily
therefore, even if just 0.1% of say the young and healthy develop critical condition, unchecked spread and disregard for distancing means there will a large number of young hitting hospitals

basically I'm saying majority of people will be fine, but if everyone especially the young don't take precaution, then the number of infected will be massive without reason, and even a small slice of that number is catastrophic to resources

Those UK projections (worst case ?) are similar to the one Le Monde mentioned for France, between 300k and 500k deaths...

Also I said it a number of times and I won't copy paste the long emails in French but basically supervisors in the hospitals of Eastern France are being grim : they're constantly reorganizing but any adjustement is rendered obsolete in the day by the escalation of cases. They've reached capacity for beds, supplies are getting hammered (despite one of the hospital having decent stocks, they're supposed to take in charge any issue that might arise for a nearby nuclear power plant). Emergencies are clogged by COVID related cases despite filtering aggressively all other causes. All of their deaths are COVID-related in the last day.

I'm afraid the number of deaths will start to ramp up pretty severely in the next week. I didn't check the exact timeline but basically we only maybe escalated to the level of Italian measures a couple of days early.

I just told more of our employees to WFH and we are getting the distance thing working. Still have no idea how to handle our front desk for calls in (1980 phone system can't have calls be picked up off-site) and mail in (lots of checks and things coming in) and mail out (checks and stuff), so we still need a receptionist at least. So if they mandatory office closed/wfh we are gonna have issues, but otherwise I think everyone else can wfh and it'll work.

Our marketing is also a mass mailing campaign and need to use our commercial printer at work to print all the letters & envelopes and have someone stamp and mail them all. Not very wfh and drives a lot of business in, but may have to pause it I guess.

I saw in our county (OC) on Friday they finally released some numbers after the lack of transparency. As of Thursday only 124 people tested in the county total (3.19 million population), and 13 positives including 1 community spread, 1,100 test kits total available.
So basically we have no idea how many people, how spread out it is, who has it, in our community right now because they're not testing hardly anyone!

And everyone was out at packed bars and clubs last night and now newsom closes the bars/clubs -_-

Better than nothing, but we're always behind the bar on this stuff and being reactive instead of proactive. It'll help but we definitely could've saved a lot more lives by doing more sooner.

I don't think testing at this stage can offer more than a representative sample... That said, the US authorities really messed it up with keeping up at what should have been appropriate efforts on that front.

There are cities in the US that have implemented curfews and NYC is considering doing it in the next couple of days, wouldn't be surprising that Paris would

What cities in the US are doing a curfew?

Also what cities are doing drive-thru testing? I hope they do that in my city, cause I'd like friends/family to be able to get tested without risk if they need to. Most of my family and myself included, are afraid of going to doctors offices right now and delaying follow ups for other non-life threatening stuff, because of the risk.

I was thinking actually... If the true figure of people infected with the coronavirus is almost certainly considerably higher than the reported figure, then perhaps the mortality rate is also off and is actually considerably lower than reported. My reasoning behind this is, it seems to me that the reported deaths would be much more accurate than reported cases. Mainly because you would imagine that anyone severely ill would be tested and/or a cause of death would be ascertained.

Unless you subscribe to the English model, what is the point of not starting with it as soon as possible?
The sooner you can get people contained, the most effective the infection slow down will be.
Unless you're just hoping it won't hit your area as bad, but you'd be delusional to think so, when you're not some remote island only reachable by seaplane.

Yes. Most certainly. Sadly the exact mortality rate is a bit of an academic consideration at this point, Euro hospitals are getting hammered as is.

To be honest, I (and many others) have treated it too lightly. I agree with you. I don't know if the French authorities are entirely reactive or if they're boiling the frog a bit but we went to Macron's address on Thursday closing schools to a possible curfew and stricter lockdown (rumors of one person per household being allowed to go shopping food, basically) on four days... With the somewhat contradictory decision to keep elections for mayor's today on.

In retrospect they should maybe have had just gone maximum on Thursday but heh...

I guess that's it until April 15, at the very least.

Yeah. It doesn't change the fact that thousands of people are going to die. One thing it does emphasise though is that your chances dying from it is pretty low.

Damn. I guess the NBA and NHL will have to immediately go into playoffs mode. Perhaps even a limited version of cutting down the number of rounds instead of just making series best of 5. And to make playoffs fair make it so the records are those of equal games, they should go to every teams respective record to be the... o m g.

Simply put if one team in the league has only played 69 games, then teams that have played 70 or 71 will all be reverted to their record when they only played 69 games. There!

I will say though, the one thing that Atlantic article pointed out was, the fact that it is mild or asymptomatic in most people is exactly the reason it is so dangerous. And that is interesting in itself. It is able to kill so many people exactly because it is able to spread through so many people. Viruses with a much higher mortality rate only seem to kill people in the hundreds worldwide in contrast. That is because killing the host so quickly means it doesn't have a chance to spread. The coronavirus seems to have the right balance to potentially kill hundreds of thousands of people.

Hence why the Diamond Princess represents an excellent source of study.
