Wrasslemania has been moved to the WWE Performance Center. With no fans. In a gym. In Florida.

Time truly is a flat circle :lucas

Saw a youtube clip of John Cena talking it up in the ring and then some dude who I guess has voices in his head came in to share his point of view. It was strange. Like sitting in drama class and watching two people perform.

Same goes for the clip I saw of some women's tag team battle. It all looks like practice.

Text messages, however, can pose a particular problem, said Graham Brookie, the director and managing editor of the Digital Forensic Research Lab at the Atlantic Council. He said text messages are usually a trusted medium, in part because the sender needs to know the recipient’s phone number. They cannot be as easily forwarded as messages on other social media, like WhatsApp messages or Facebook posts.

“It’s a little bit more intentional,” he said.

By sourcing information to a relative or friend of a friend, the messages appear to be conversational and accessible while maintaining a “facade of credibility,” he said.

The disinformation follows a familiar playbook used on other social media, old-fashioned chain letters and emails: asking the recipient to forward the message to others, Mr. Brookie said.

“It’s the latest version of that threat,” he said. “It’s not something that is new, but it is something that is effective.”
Quote
The goal is not clear.

It’s not immediately clear who was responsible for the mass text messages on Sunday, or any of the others, according to Mr. Brookie, who was an adviser at the council until 2017. Text messages are hard to track, because data about them, kept by companies like AT&T or Verizon, is not necessarily accessible to the public, he said.

One of the few ways to track text messages is through crowdsourced reports on social media.

“We don’t know where they are coming from, which is one of the main vulnerabilities here,” Mr. Brookie said. “It could be anything from your everyday scammer to a hostile nation-state.”

And not knowing where the messages are coming from also makes it harder to ascertain the goal of the messages. Because the messages are urging people to stockpile goods, the goal could be financial gain, Mr. Brookie said. Or it could be to stoke chaos and confusion across the country, he added.

What can people do about it?

Mr. Brookie said people receiving text messages about the coronavirus should verify the source of the message as well as the source’s source. He said people should check for biases in the message.

“Does something feel like it’s trying to scare you?” he said. “Is it claiming it has all the facts while others don’t? Is it jumping to conclusions that you haven’t seen in other places? Is it using rhetorical tools in order to persuade you of something?”

He added, “if it’s not pointing to the latest, verified science-based information, like coronavirus.gov, then absolutely think twice about it.”

I mean, it's a foregone conclusion regardless of being substantiated or not. Every major Euro country is enforcing some sort of varying lockdown preventing unnecessary social gatherings, generally including closing up bars, restaurants (except take away) and all non essential shops. Several US states have already turned towards this. All signs point, even with the potential undertesting issue in the US, to the infection being probably on a similar level in the US than in Europe.

Also it's a bit of a broken record but I'm not pleased with the situation in France (and most other neighboring countries ?) with regards to masks, tests and fever checks. Asian countries really went hard on this AFAIK. It's one thing to ask citizens to be responsible but if you don't give them the tools to do so... It would also allow for a more targeted, selective response.

I mean accepting Macron's flourishes of being at war with this thing, you'd think the analogy would be to reassign productive capabilities towards this as a major priority.

The vibe around town is super dour but others seem totally oblivious. Saw a group of middle aged people hugging and shaking hands when I stopped to grab some food earlier.  :doge

My grandmother has COPD and my dumbass dad still smokes despite having heart issues. More worried about them than anything else.

Germany pretty much did the same things France did. Every store not deemed critically important is closed. Restaurants are only allowed to open between 6 AM - 6 PM.
Went to a wholesale store you need a business to enter which restaurants and small shops use to buy their stuff. A lot of stuff is gone. No rice, no noodles, no flour., no frozen food. Never seen so many empty shelves.

Working out the numbers right now and writing a document to explain to the government aid program that we'll lose about 50% of our revenue over the coming weeks.
Kinda sad that only employees with part time or full time contracts are covered and there's literally nothing for those on 0-hour contracts. Which some of our student workers have.

Trying to see if I can work something out for them but it seems dire at this point.
I'm at least allowing some of them to work more hours this week on existing projects.  :thinking

Luckily some of them still live with their parents so they won't be left out on the streets or anything but it's going to suck telling them they will have no income for the foreseeable future.  :fbm

A day after ordering all bars and restaurants in Illinois closed to the public, Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Monday ordered gatherings of 50 or more people to be canceled in line with new CDC guidelines issued Sunday.

Quote
The ban applies to gyms, fitness centers, bowling alleys, private clubs and theaters, according to an executive order Pritzker issued. It doesn’t apply to grocery stores, hospitals, pharmacies, gas stations banks or shelters. Pritzker acknowledged the CDC is now recommending capping events at 10.

Technically movie theaters can be open, but I guess can't seat more than 50 people. Some of them have closed for time being anyway like the Music Box or the Gene Siskel Film Center. But AMC is trucking along saying they will try to spread people out. I didn't see any update from Regal theaters which is another very large chain. They seem to be continuing too as long as they keep things under 50 people.

I'm one of those "cheap Tuesday's" people, but not this week fellas. And I doubt that these chains will be able to legally stay open in Illinois by the time the weekend rolls around.

This paper says that a lockdown would last 18 months that's probably why the Dutch are stopping just shy of doing that but everything else.
imagine if everything stopped for 18 months, what would be left of the civilized world?  :stahp

It basically lasted three days in France before it went from "you can seat 100 people max" to "close them down".

UK is apparently dropping their herd immunity strategy and moving on to more serious measures as is the US.
I feel like our PM just did a sort of A/B popular vote test to see how people would respond to the message of: "You're all going to be infected and some of you will die".

It'll probably lead to people demanding the government to lock down and quarantine them which is easier to manage and maintain than imposing it against their will.

Unsubstantiated rumor:

My brother just texted me telling me his fiancé heard from a friend who works directly with the ceo of an urgent care provider that well, here’s the text

“[redacted]’s friend works directly with the CEO of [redacted]. Their Chief Medical Officer got an update from the CDC. They believe there will be a nationwide 2 week quarantine in place by midweek. “

I heard the same from a very reliable source.

Go out and get what you need now if you have to, imo.

One of my friends heard this from a buddy that used to work at the NSA.

I was like “you sweet summer child, thinking that working at the NSA absolves you from rank stupidity and gullibility to conspiracy”.

Quote
In the U.S. there are over 1,600 confirmed cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with 41 deaths. Makary said that the number of cases, though, is likely much higher.

“Don’t believe the numbers when you see, even on our Johns Hopkins website, that 1,600 Americans have the virus,” he said. “No, that means 1,600 got the test, tested positive. There are probably 25 to 50 people who have the virus for every one person who is confirmed.”

He added: “I think we have between 50,000 and half a million cases right now walking around in the United States.”

In a study of 24 passengers who’d just flown from Israel, 7 tested positive for coronavirus, of which 4 had no symptoms — and *the viral load of specimens from asymptomatic patients was higher than from the 3 patients who had symptoms

Shouldn’t be a surprise. The ‘symptoms’ are a result of your body’s immune system working in overdrive to eliminate the threat. So naturally there would be less specimens.

Girlfriend and her sister both had a feeling "like an elephant was standing on their chests", neither had a fever, cough, etc though. They both went to the hospital where they had some labwork and an x-ray done, but no COVID tests since they weren't showing enough symptoms.  :-\

Doctors think it's an everyday respiratory infection but my girlfriend is gonna self-isolate. So looks like skype dates for the next few weeks.

X-ray results for both of them came back (my gf went here and her sister back to her home in PA), they show pleurisy of the lungs, probably from a viral or bacterial infection. So probably nothing to do with covid. But still gonna keep to skype for now instead of in-person...
