Also phone your relatives, rekindle old friendships that became estranged, use our modern tools to reconnect to people you like. I'm sure most everyone will appreciate and return the favour.

I just hope the Italian gov protect the guys printing as they're about to get fucked in court over this.

Working from home has been quite the adjustment for me, it's fine and I'm able to do my job luckily, but jeez is it depressing just being sat in an office with no real human interaction.

My partner on the other hand does fitness classes which have all been cancelled now as gyms have shut so she is panicking about things as she's self employed and there's not really been any real help for her yet. Just got to ride this out really, we're also buying a house atm and planning a wedding so it's pretty scary times ahead for us, just hope we don't lose everything.

The court thing turned out to be fake news. The company subsidiary in Italy just couldn't give them the blue print for 'legal' reasons so they had to reverse engineer it on their own.
There was never any threat of a lawsuit.

Latest number here is 30 deaths, same as yesterday.
Most aged 81 - 84, youngest 63.

Infections up 600 (500 yesterday)

It seems to stabilize somewhat.

Also seeing a lot of stuff like this worldwide

Tests for this combo are being extended in France and rumors (but unsourced, a lot of crazy tales are gonna come out about what is happening in hospitals) that some physicians are already trying that without official backing. But I imagine it's gonna be at least a couple more weeks before we get any real feedback.

There's also a lot of suspicion leveraged at China but their doctors aren't less qualified & concerned, they've been testing a lot of existing treatments with a couple of months more time, I'd imagine if this was a cheap easy fix (which hydrochloroquin is AFAIK) this would be more common knowledge (not a doctor, maybe someone is actually following the medical data the PRC is sharing).

I heard someone on the CBC say to only look at news at specific times of the day for a specific amount of time.  I'm at the point where I am informed enough so I only watch the news now for the PMs address.

I'm mostly past poring over all the corona news as well. It just doesn't make much difference to me right now; I followed the federal response, and I followed the state response, all news past that is misery. And I'm not willing to load up on misery just yet when there's too much hitting the fan next few weeks.  :-\

At least drugs are approved fast  :idont

https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1241367245143642113

This is so irresponsible.  Forget the fact that there's no data on its efficacy for corona, these medications are already approved and in the wild and can be taken off-label.  All this will do is have thousands of people call their doctor demanding a prescription for these drugs.  When doctors won't do it, people are going to think their healthcare professionals have some sort of agenda because the president of the United fucking States is endorsing these medications ("I hope they're put to use immediately").   This guy can't do anything right for one fucking day and he makes every expert's job that much harder.

I don't even think this is strategic avariciousness on his part - I just think he's an impulsive idiot that doesn't understand the measured nature of healthcare or, even more generally, the scientific method.  It's like the guy in the Youtube comments that heard from a friend that colloidal silver cures cancer and that's enough to energize him for hours arguing about Big Pharma.   This medication could very well work for Corona, but all the activity involved with figuring that out is outside his control and conceptual understanding anyway.  He needs to just shut up until some real evidence shows up.

Anyone around NYC?
City seems like it is gonna get utterly battered the next week.

I'm from the burbs and my brother is at the heart of the action (he's an infectious diseases doctor at one of the largest hospitals). Right now 10k cases confirmed across NYS. He says by Tuesday will have the kits needed to go from 90 tests a day to 2k tests.

French Minister of Health says the "test strategy will evolve" in France.
I'm repeating myself but all of it screams "We're doing damage control for our unpreparedness and holding until we have the material means to manage this better".

The Government Spokesperson's argument on TV yesterday was "Well not everyone know how to use a mask properly", which is another level of gaslighting in the whole supply fiasco. There's ads everywhere on what common sense guidelines you should follow about washing hands and keeping a meter apart, surely it's not that hard to educate the public on how to wear them.

It's not even about the efficacy of the drug, the potential of the drugs, the faults of the study, or whateverthefuck.  It's about being discerning enough as a leader to shut up about monumentally consequential information until experts have confirmed and made conclusive statements about it.   He doesn't seem to grasp what he's doing.  If he keeps 'endorsing' this drug, it turns out to be ineffective, then all these people are going to scream at the doctors and scientists.

Scenes of Montparnasse Paris rail station crowded with hundreds of people apparently trying to go to the country for the lockdown. (The national railways have started downscaling city to city traffic a few days ago.)
 :picard

I'm lukewarm about the whole patronizing about the unruly citizenry but Jesus that's dumb. If I was selfish, I'd say the less crowded Paris is, the better for me, but potentially spreading that shit onto less affected regions as of now probably isn't the best idea.

That does not sound great, but least you're only doing one day and not both,

I have been working today remotely but it's mainly been looking at emails and then asking them people to read prior emails, it's been wild getting 500+ staff working remotely from our companies quite frankly shocking stance on flexible working previously, the hardest part was just insuring VPN could handle the load and rolling out teams as we have a weird password setup from the migration which requires configuration on a person to person case which I did feel like pulling my hair out over when I had the mountain of tickets. Also going from doing mainly project work back to staring in the coal face of support has reminded me why I don't wanna go back that full time, the doing fixes is fine, but dealing with people too stupid or "important" to read a company wide email I have sent to help them keep their job makes me that much more hateful to general users. Can't wait to see them try take away flexible working after this though.

So, I live in the center of my town

Government: "Stay inside, young and healthy people, even when the weather is nice. Only go out if you must. Save the boomers!"  :bolo

Boomer #1: "What a nice day for a stroll outside"

Boomer #2(in front of closed store): "Can't believe they closed all the stores *shakes hand* how are you doing?"

It's like a goddamn boomer party out there. These people are forcing us into a lockdown.
I was afraid this would happen once the sun would reveal itself this weekend  :-\

People are heading to parks, organizing for their kids to play together in their gardens.

Can't wait to see them try take away flexible working after this though.

I can't stand how so many people never read their email- every time any important updates are pushed out, the guy in charge of the rollouts sends a nice, detailed message explaining everything in layman's terms and includes screenshots, plus BIG RED FONT explaining that yes, you WILL be prompted to restart your computer.  These emails go out a few times a day in the days leading up the update/rollout.

.....

Cue lots of phone calls/emails demanding to know why their PCs are about to restart and that they can't stop it and/or what this "new software" is.

:dead

I work at a law firm and the vast majority of all the lawyers have laptops with VPN access already.  It's all the other people who don't or the few lawyers who opted for desktops in their offices who are blowing up our phones asking HOW DO I COMPUTER.  It's pretty hard to help someone out when you ask them to click on Start or the Windows button and they don't know what the fuck you're talking about or how to do it.  I particularly enjoy the hour-long calls from folks who want to use Citrix on their home PCs and it turns out they have like Windows '98 or some shit that isn't going to work.  And the clueless Mac user calls are the stuff of nightmares.

Wait, it doesn't? I just read about Citrix in my Network+ textbook and supposedly it-- No, wait, it was proprietary, MS licensed it for a while, got pissed (in more politer terms) and made Remote Desktop/Connection.

There's an open-source Citrix-like that works on OS X, *NIX/BSD and Windows (older versions like 98?), which is what I'm thinking of. :snoop

Re: IT Jerb

They have us working another weekend, but it's not as bad this time- boss was able to convince the higher-ups to let half of us work Saturday and the other half Sunday, so we actually get a day off after two weeks.  It's been so slow today that he even said I could sign off right now, but I can't because I have to wait for another co-worker, who has been on the phone with someone doing who knows what for over an hour- the guy went and bought some USB display adapter that doesn't work- HANG UP AND GIVE ME MY FUCKING WEEKEND ALREADY :punch

OTOH I'm just getting more overtime pay for sitting here browsing sites and playing video games

Yeah, it's just so frustrating because I spend a lot of time making it in clear English and for teams for example, on my email I literally said click this link which literally installed it for them and then for them to attempt to login and email me / raise a call so I can do any further changes to their account to enable them to work, I sent that email two weeks ago with a chaser sent last monday, roll on office work from home day I've got 80 fucking calls and people then emailing me to say "I can't use this" :fbm

Yeah sounds about the same as me, although within a law firm you must come up against some real asshole characters, I work within media and events so we have a real mixture of laptops, desktops and mac users which makes for an interesting mix of issues, we luckily already had logmein or datto on all of our kit across the various businesses we own so we could at least just remote onto their machines providing they knew how to sign into broadband, some freaks within our company didn't have a pc or broadband at home, WTF do they do at home weirdos.  We also had some old ass kits just like you did, it's a wild west out there.

stay safe breh, wait for that sweet sweet overtime and bonus money for all the extra shit we've had to do to get things moving in this new weird world.

Just dropping by to encourage any Boreans that smoke to drop the habit immediately, atleast try for the time being.
Seems poor outcomes may also relate to smoking habits and not just age. Might explain why many youth are hospitalized when smoking/e-cigs have become fashionable.
