Today on the news they used "squash the sombrero” I was very confused by that term.

UK right?  I genuinely heared the sombrero thing on The Last Leg.  They need to express their somewhat abstract ideas in racist terms in order to disseminate it to the general public.  I hear that instead of using 'social distancing' they are saying 'pretend the person in front of you smells like curry' and 'work from home' is 'work like a Pole'.

A lot of people have a hard time wrapping their heads around imperfect info and are quick to blame malice instead of "incompetence".

You're talking about the top leaders in big business and government. To call it malice would assume they earned their way up. Some people just need to believe in the system.

Weird flex but OK.

The first patient has arrived at the Central Park overflow facility, meaning at least one hospital has run out of beds. We're not even at the height of the crisis yet.

I try to wear a humorous mask on here at all times but this is making me sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

Not much to do other than trying to avoid it for yourself and your relatives, or at least it avoid it now when hospitals are jammed.
I know at least of one confirmed death and one positive case (immunodeficiency but probably out of the woods according to his doc) at... One degree of separation ? Second circle ? It still feels kind of unreal, despite thousands dying, apart from the paranoia everyone you cough or have an headache. I guess that's very wartime like (I read that some people in Beyrouth found this lockdown better than the one during the civil war...), you still try to live your life.

UEFA is delaying matches planned in June.
I guess they expect that large gatherings, travel or just normal sport activity (even crowd free) won't be resumed by then in Europe.

From what I've gathered the plan in Europe is to do a 2 months lock down on / 1 month lock down partially off sequence of sorts for the remainder of the year on a national level.
This gives the national economies some breathing room and people some relief to organize limited social gatherings. But this will only be done if the healthcare systems can manage it and under the assumption that higher temperatures have an impact on the virus.

Unless something happens that removes the need for such measures I don't expect borders to open and air travel to resume until after August/September when they'll likely have enough surplus tests and production of tests to test anyone prior to boarding a plane.

That's an idea thrown into some Imperial College paper (granted, a lot of Euro government consulted an expert there) but I'm skeptical about it. I don't think most small business can just turn on / off like that, a lot of shit that got disrupted will take over a month to untangle. I think people, provided the bare minimum of necessities can be met, would actually prefer a longer lockdown than going in and out for a year.

In theory that's not impossible even if the economy get destroyed, I suppose : It would be wartime life, miserable but doable. I want to believe there's a better way to do this but at this point in time it's difficult to tell : We're still in the dark about the virus, the CFR, how potent is the immunity (reinfection has not been entirely ruled out even if deemed very unlikely), medication is on trial, fast tests are still in development and a vaccine is more than a year away.

The presidents for the region Great East and PACA in France confirms that "US buyers" are trying to outbid them even as the cargo is about to arrive. Sometimes they win, sometimes they don't.

It's apparently the same circus in the US with several states, the Feds and FEMA doing bidding wars on ventilators.

I'm hopeful a total lockdown isn't needed when we have more far spread testing, better data on rate of people who were infected through antidote tests, smartphone data and a well thought out balance of social activity and staying at home. South Korea seems to do fine without a lockdown of the country, although I suspect social compliance is more pronounced there vs. western societies.

The difficulty will be to balance social activity and business needs.

There's the added problem of civil unrest if this lockdown continues and drags on. The economy will be ruined and a lot of people will still lose relatives.

Business people and investors are now tweeting and writing op-eds about how the economy is going to shit and this just isn't worth it.
They say we should just isolate the weak and vulnerable instead. Now these voices are muffled by the daily high death reports but in a month the situation will be very different as people are fired from their jobs and all the measures have taken effect hopefully reducing the death toll. They'll be sitting at home jobless and buried in bills, elections will be postponed and police and healthcare understaffed. It'll also be very unequal as tech companies and people able to work from home will still be able to make a living.
Imagine what happens to the US if Trump understandably postpones the elections until March or May 2021?

Entire industries like travel and events are going to collapse within the next 3 months and after the first 6 months governments the world over will either have to bailout everybody with hopes of avoiding hyperinflation or opt to introduce austerity or tax increases.
Chances are that if you open up after 2 months for a bit the spending temporarily soars as people can partake in activities they couldn't before. Still, the economic damage of this thing will be felt for years perhaps even decades.

Our prime minister today said that people who expect the world to return to the way it was before the corona virus are 'living in an illusion' and the government will play a bigger part in all our lives going forward.

Not to whitewash France : when the order to requisition medical supplies came, 4 millions masks that were transitioning in Lyon from the Sweden manufacturer to Italy and Spain was seized. The authorities concerned accepted to release half of it for shipping after the Swedish government appealed directly.

Trump’s latest tonal and tactical shift (and almost certainly not the last) was driven by several factors, both personal and political. Trump learned that his close friend, 78-year-old New York real estate mogul Stan Chera, had contracted COVID-19 and fallen into a coma at NewYork-Presbyterian. “Boy, did that hit home. Stan is like one of his best friends,” said prominent New York Trump donor Bill White. Trump also grew concerned as the virus spread to Trump country. “The polling sucked. The campaign panicked about the numbers in red states. They don’t expect to win states that are getting blown to pieces with coronavirus,” a former West Wing official told me.

Law enforcement is investigating several controversial pop-up coronavirus test sites operating in central Louisville this week that the Metro Council president characterized as "scams."

City and state officials are advising residents to avoid the sites for testing, and Kentucky Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack said Wednesday all testing sites must work with the state.

Two medical marketing companies peddling coronavirus tests — including one that promises results in 24 hours — charged individuals who exhibited symptoms up to $250 per test.

The sites have been in various locations around the city, including Sojourn Church in Shelby Park, as well as Wayside Christian Mission and a Marathon gas station on Broadway downtown.

Quote
Metro Council President David James told The Courier Journal on Wednesday that the tests are scams.

City officials said they didn't know about the test sites before they began operating this week, but an email indicates the city provided guidance about health reporting requirements to Edward Beighley, president of BCK Marketing, who coordinated a testing location at Sojourn Church Midtown.

Just cause this hit my math-nerve, it's not really about the range, its that log graphs are good at plotting exponential phenomena, which generally happen to have large ranges.  If the underlying phenomenon was linear, a log graph would not be appropriate regardless of the range.
