0.214% of NYC residents have died from COVID-19. So that's a 1.07% fatality rate. And no the fatality rate of the flu is not 0.1%--it's probably lower.

1. Antibody stats may be inflated.
2. There's a lag in deaths, so the actual rate may be higher.
3. The median age of New York City is a bit lower than the national average.

The floor for the fatality rate is 1%.

edit:
0.124% of the state has died of COVID-19. That equals a 1.0% fatality rate.

They probably don't have as many tests as they would need.
Financial Times reports that Ecuador statistics show a massive spike in deaths year on year in the Guayas region (+10k, contrast with France +20k).

Looking at places like South Korea and New Zealand which seem to have pummeled covid19 into submission and getting extra depressed about the discourse in America.

NZ passed a large stimulus that directly subsidized workers on a monthly basis, whether they were full time, part time, or unemployed. The US could have easily done the same. Instead they basically starved people, fucked up the small business loans, and forced people back to work.

Those federal UE benefits expire on June 31st. No way the senate renews it, even if we get hit with another wave of cases/layoffs.

It's not just the fiscal response, but the disease control itself.

South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, etc. have all had some combination of early intervention, isolation, mass testing etc. that let them get daily new cases down into single digits.

But there seems to be relatively little discussion of what we can learn and copy from these, much less just using them as a light at the end of the tunnel. Instead we've got a vocal minority (including officeholders and opinionmakers) still downplaying the danger of the virus and wringing their hands about just how long we can keep up our current measures.

Knowing that the example of South Korea exists and is being ignored just makes "well, guess we'll just have to let grandma die!" that more infuriating.

Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce announced the change Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the declaration took effect.

“In the short time beginning on May 1, 2020, that face coverings have been required for entry into stores/restaurants, store employees have been threatened with physical violence and showered with verbal abuse," City Manager Norman McNickle said in a statement. "In addition, there has been one threat of violence using a firearm."

i'm not cheering for these businesses to fail but it does feel kinda good to see people not wanting to fuck around with the virus. these early openings are stupid and i'm glad the majority is seeing that.

I mean, surely there is more pressing things like returning the inmate overflow to homes and keeping an eye on them being sick/spreading it than Marijuana fare hoppers. Especially when the subway should be closed. :doge

Saw a news article in my local news that local business/restaurants are re-opening here in CA despite Newsom's order. Police aren't arresting or fining them so nothing is being enforced and all these dumbass protesting re-open people are just gonna start opening their businesses because that's how we do things in dumbass america.

This shit is never going to end here.  :-\

Eh, I feel like the open protests happening across America are mostly Trumpers (and all the trump signs at them sorta reinforces it) who feel like stay-at-home vs open is a Media/Liberals/Democrats v Conservatives thing and so they're out protesting because their side doesn't want to put up with what the left is making them do.

To me this is more a symptom of the great divide that's occurred between political parties where the other side is the enemy and it's always about doing the opposite of what the other side tells you to do. Also has to do with the lack of education, mistrust of the media on the Trump side, which is generally same groups as the Anti-Vax for the same reasons.

It might be part that, but I think there is more of a urban v rural divide going on here. This virus is hitting us disproportionately and those that live in remote parts or far flung suburbs are getting very restless because they’re not experiencing this the same way people living in higher density areas are. Those types of people (living in low density populations) are more likely to be trump supporters.

Here's Michigan for example, and most of the green counties are closer to 10-20 than 40-49:

Detroit's not the source of the protest, and things are very much "normal" except for the shutdown in the capital area (in the center of the lower part), even the cases count is low. So a lot of people get the impression it's for nothing if they aren't in the Detroit/I-75 corridor.

If the governor for example said she was increasing restrictions on the five yellow/red counties and reducing them everywhere else people would probably less resistant to some statewide general orders. Especially since they hate Detroit anyway.

I’m super curious about the shape of these daily death curves.

One would expect the peak to be about 1-2 weeks after social distancing measures are put in place, which has been fairly representative of the trends. But after the peak I would expect to see a statistically significant dip. Obviously it wouldn’t be a symmetrical bell curve, but a definite point where SD was put into place and a sharp, maybe small, but sharp decline. A place you could point to and say this was the result of social distancing.

What we do see is the peak, a plateau, and a gradual taper down. Like in Italy, the plateau itself lasted about two weeks of around 800 deaths per day. The death toll continued to climb well after social distancing, as you would expect given the incubation period of the virus, and then hovered for an additional two weeks at peak level deaths. That shouldn’t be the case. That would mean that during week two of lockdown/social distancing there were just as many new infections as pre-social distancing infection rates. And even when the daily death figure begins to inch downward, often over a month after lockdown, that suggests that 3-4 weeks in to lockdown you are only seeing a marginal decrease in new infections.

There has to be some missing data here...

The protest I shared earlier happened in a built-up suburb not too far from NYC, #6 on the counties list. So I don't really think it's an urban vs rural divide any more than it's a left vs right divide. LI went from wealthy white Republican in the 20th century to slight Democrat (due to increasing diversity and a shrinking middle class), but Trump won both counties due to him taking advantage of white anxiety over demographic change (MS13 has become an increasing problem around here in the past few years).
