By coincidence, I've been on a reading kick lately of mid-20th century geo-political history. It all started by reading about the fall of France's 3rd Republic in 1940, and that led to further readings about putting Europe back together after the war. Inadvertently in all of this I've stumbled across what I think is history echoing itself. I could write pages about what I've read in the last four months, but to keep it short I'll say this: I think that we are at a moment in history where the lessons learned in 1945 are being forgotten. Some of this is good, and some of it is bad; we can't be prisoners to history but forgetting the lessons learned isn't great either. It is amazing at reading the history, how geo-political realities at the time led to decisions that grew and morphed into the American Military Imperialism that we all hate today. That said, in 1945 it made a lot of sense why the West said- "hey, we tried the whole disarming and isolation thing, and it didn't work. He need to do things very different next time."

I'm not trying to say you're wrong sphagnum, just that there are thousands of pages of doctoral studies that could be written on this topic, and your post triggered me to think about it. While World War 2 looms large in American history, we are reaching a point where the important details are being lost as any living memory of the period fades away. What's left is a memory dominated by people that only remember the fallout of the decisions made in response to 2 world wars- and I think there's a natural bias towards remembering the negative. So we think, "Man, what the fuck are we doing? This military imperialism is insane, immoral, and counter productive. We need to shift gears radically." And certainly we do, wars like Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq have been disasters, not to mention the always present smaller military actions that have killed tens of thousands over the last 70 years.

But I think there may be a huge cosmic irony if the lessons we learn undo the lessons of 1945, and put the world inadvertently back into a position like that of 1900. I'm mostly just spitballing here, and this is a challenging topic to cover with any credibility in 3 paragraphs, but I really do think we are living through a very interesting time of transition. The dominant experience that formed the model that has guided American (and world) politics for five generations (Greatest, Silent, Boomers, Xers, and maybe Millennials) is under assault in ways that it never has been. What will replace it, and how that new model may echo earlier ones, will be damn interesting.

I've come back from yet another unjust ban to tell you this before I go. This site is an appaling trash pile. Its members are largely simpleminded children, incapable of serious discussion. Its staff is mostly whoever will bow and scrape before the ones already in charge and promise to squelch any discussion that threatens the white cis male pseudo-progressive hegemony.

You think of yourselves as a progressive group, yet you all seem incapable of basic forgiveness, nor of holding stances that don't eventually lead to violence. You pretend to bar discussions that would hurt the LGBTQ&c. community yet won't tell the basic truth that many of your "progressive" heroes are bigoted against them, because it would conflict with your unstated goal of putting class concerns (read: being envious of anyone with more money than you) first. To this community, every minority is a convenient shield when it's time to bludgeon the insufficiently pure, but are an obstacle when they start protesting that they're being mistreated.

And when you can't deal with it? You just ban anyone who doesn't bend the knee. Can't ban them? Just ignore their concerns while longtime members accuse them of being bigots. Recent threads show this to be the case and yet no member who did this is even mildly disciplined. For anyone who isn't part of the inner circle, paying fealty to the selfish concerns of the privileged, a ban is inevitable.
