Being an 'older person' this stuff is very hard to understand sometimes.

It is common for equality movements to begin from the position that marginalized people deserve the same rights as the unoppressed majority. This is a complicated struggle that many people have fought and died during. Women who fought for the same rights as men, African Americans who fought for the same rights as whites, and queer people who fought for the same rights as straights. What sometimes happens, both on the broader and on the individual level, is that people fight to become part of the status quo instead of dismantling the status quo.

What this means is that people fighting for equality only achieve equality on the terms of their oppressors. Black people are treated with respect but only if they act like white people, women are treated with dignity but only if they act like men, and queer people are treated with respect as long as they don't act gay. This is, at best, a stepping stone to equality and not the goal of any actual equality movement. Some people stop here, believing they have achieved equality, and continue to reject their own identity in favor of the new identity mandated by their new tenuous allies.

An easy example I can think of in the feminist movement is famed artist Georgia O'Keefe. She worked very hard to gain respect within the art community, and was in fact respected, but only by shedding feminine aesthetic and divorcing her work from her gender. As she aged, she struggled with the fact second wave feminists celebrated her as a woman artist because she felt like she spent her whole life trying not to be seen as "a woman." She was never an enemy to this sort of change (to my knowledge) but it is worth highlighting that for her feminism was distracting from the fact she was a woman whereas future feminists wanted to emphasize the fact she was a woman.

This mindset, that equality comes from suppression rather than expression, is something we occasionally see in the queer community too.

Buck Angel believes queer people, especially trans people, should be adhering to strict cishet (cisgender/heterosexual) expectations of gender and sexuality because this is what he has been warped to believe is equality. Instead of seeing new age queer people as a succeeding generation of LGBT who started an equality movement of their own, he sees them as the enemy. He sees them as a threat to how he perceives equality.

This sort of inter-queer prejudice is not exclusive to any specific type of queer person. But Buck Angel is a good example of someone who found a degree of success and respect in his life and now believes he is the authority on that. He wields and flexes his success against other queer people in a way that benefits cishet definitions of normalcy because it is only within this framework he believes equality can exist. Not on queer terms, on straight terms.

There is room for trans people who adhere to binary gender norms. There are lots of trans people like this. This is not wrong, or bad, or a problem. Just like there are butch and femme lesbians, or gay men who are really flamboyant and gay men who are more reserved. There is not a wrong way to express your identity. What is wrong is using your identity as a weapon against other people - especially people fighting for the same respect as you. At that point you have found equality only in the sense you've become part of the oppressive status quo yourself.


Buck Angel's emotions are likely driven by fear on some level. Terrible crimes and gross inhumanities are committed against trans people all over the world. A lot of older trans people adopted a more reserved notion of trans identity as a necessity for survival. Letting someone know you were trans could end your career - or even your life. I cannot imagine the stress associated with that kind of existence. It must be very difficult to live your life wanting to be invisible and blend in so you can feel safe and then be met with a new generation of trans people who are far more out and proud than you ever dared to be. When so much of your survival depended on privacy, it is probably extremely difficult to reconcile the loud and proud youth movement of today with your own lifelong experience.

Buck Angel was a forerunner of the trans movement and a hero to trans men back when there were no others like him. He showed what could be possible with their bodies and in society. When queer culture surpassed him he had the choice to learn from his successors or oppose them. He chose to oppose them. He got what he always wanted: to sit at the same table as those who opposed his existence. Now he joins them in threatening, antagonizing, and opposing the civil rights of his own people.


I am cisgender so if I mispoke or explained something incorrectly I hope a trans member will correct me. I apologize if I was inexact in any explanation or example in the above.

It feels like (especially with Arielle) so much of this is down to what something in the black community called "respectability politics". That if you fall in line, present yourself a certain way that society agreed upon, you'll get the respect and acceptance you deserve anyway as a human being.
