It feels like (especially with Arielle) so much of this is down to what something in the black community called "respectability politics". That if you fall in line, present yourself a certain way that society agreed upon, you'll get the respect and acceptance you deserve anyway as a human being. Which, to begin with is bullshit because you had to fight just for even the ones who conform to society to be accepted. Also they barely accept you. Also why should you have to conform in the first place if you aren't bothering anyone with your life style? Americans want you to "mind your business" until things look "too" different.

she doesn't fall in line and keep her head down and does as she's told, she doesn't agree with 100% everything being espoused by the group
she's not behaving respectably and conforming as expected
so they tell her fuck off and she gets ostracized, no wonder she would give up
