So, I said the previous post was going to be my last. That was my original intent, no matter how it was received (although I will say I’m glad the reception is positive, so thank you). However, I began getting pinged by not only staff, but some trans members who were part of the Discord regarding Hexe’s post and they wanted something done about it. It’s going to be as quick as I can make it because I don’t have as long to deliberate, so.

I admitted not only in my post, but right there in the meeting, that the first perm of hers was wrong in the way it was conducted and drawn out, and that I am part of the reason she came back. I implore anyone else who was at the talks, if you think my character, my behavior, my words, were out of line, were hostile, were transphobic, and the channel hasn’t been scrubbed, to post anything you believe Era should know about how I acted in the meeting. Regardless, it is clear. What you said to me, Hexe, wasn’t defensible. I'll just say this: Trolls have various tactics for infiltrating other communities, and we, as staff, are human and therefore not immune to everything in that realm. I would posit that none of you ("you," as in any one member of the site) will be able to catch all of the trolls 100% of the time. I wish we had made better decisions there, but we didn't - but I will still refer you to my previous post where I can absolutely assure you that you all do not see 99% of the people registering here to troll you. It's not like we sat back and were like "omg BC is so cool," it's that it's just that the idea of creating an OT had never been a contentious issue before.

To your second point:

I speak from the hip and generally don't have any anxiety over speaking my mind, and I am comfortable with confronting issues (but Nep totally sped past me with her posts here, holy shit). But this leads into the issue that people seem to have with "PR-Speak." I will go on the record and say that I hate PR-Speak and will refrain from using it whenever possible. That said, I get why we use it in posts and ban messages - our words get twisted and picked apart at every turn, and if it's some sterile reponse it makes it a bit more to come at it. But we are human, and eventually after a long period of tension we say something we probably shouldn't. While we try to recruit moderators that have level heads, it's practically inevitable that at some point one of us will do something that may be unprofessional. I think Nep's post earlier in the thread explains a good deal as to our mindset over the past few weeks, so I won't go over that again.

A lot of people keep getting hung up on this notion of civility. We let everyone get away with a lot of hostility on the site, particularly when it's directed at an individual who suddenly ends up outing themselves as a troll, alt-right, or what-have-you. But this - this relationship between staff and the community - requires some level of actually acting like an adult. We aren't asking for deference, we are asking you to come to the table actually ready to talk like you are serious about having a conversation. Are we, as staff, immune to acting out? Of course not. But sometimes the dam breaks, there is a period of venting, and generally we are able to not let our inner rage monsters get the better of us. It sometimes slips out - I'm certainly guilty of it at times, but it's most definitely not the norm.

I do want to say something, in that I was the one that, mechanically, issued the ban for Sibylus, including the message, and as I said, I think it's apparent how my (and other staffers') mindset was over the past few weeks regarding this whole thing. I was not alone in determining the ban, but I came up with the banner. Do I regret the ban message? Yes. Do I think that the ban was justified? Yes. Will I resign? No (just to get that out of the way). These past few weeks have been trying for everyone, and I apologize for that unforced error, but it's just been A Week™. I know this one instance of communication wasn't great, but the majority of my interactions with users have been, for lack of a better term, stellar.

For instance, I've had hundreds of PMs over the time I've been on this site. I've overturned bans. I've reduced bans. I've simply had chats with people. I've even spent time explaining to people why the thing they did was unacceptable. Almost all of these have been perfectly normal conversations. Sure, sometimes I get one that starts off with some hostility, but generally I'm able to get to a point where we're actually talking, and the other user isn't tweaking at 11 the entire time. Not always, but most of the time. Even if the answer doesn't end up being something they like, we typically end on decent terms.

I've spent the last three years helping manage this site, and my (and our) goal is still the same - to provide marginalized groups a place to discuss their favorite pastime. One of the things that sticks out to me with ban appeals is the amount of people that say things like "I need this place, the rest of the options are filled with alt-right shitheads." And that's a problem. I, and the rest of staff, are perfectly aware that most other sites are filled with those assholes, and there really isn't a place where people that don't prescribe to that shitty ideology are able to discuss games. But I often feel like we're at a place where because the internet causes people to be at 11 all the fucking time, we constantly are fighting amongst each other even though we want the same thing. We don't want to fight with you. It's fucking exhausting. But this has got to be a two-way street. There is no version of this site that exists where moderation only applies to people that you (you, as in individually) disagree with. There are too many different groups on the site that have different ideas of what this site means to them that we A) cannot accommodate 100% of every single one of them and B) where we do not apply rules across the board. These discussions cannot be hostage situations - they have to be actual conversations.
