I disagree with your analogy because well Black Panther is kind of tied to his race. Joel from the Last of Us is not. He’s also not a “nostalgia” character. I understand what you’re saying, but I also think an adaptation really has no rules of what it has to do. It can change anything and everything.

But more so my problem is the quick knee jerk reaction the type of fandom GAF has to changes like this. Unfortunately, I do not give them the benefit of the doubt in regards to their disagreement with a type of casting. Ideally what you are saying is an understandable and reasonable stance. Eater.com had an interesting article about all those stories that were so popular about white kids making fun of ethnic kids foods at lunch.  The second half was how various ethnic food writers and chefs were miffed about that being the popular narrative at the time.  They said that never happened to them, nobody gave them a chance for their side of the story, and kids were either interested in the food or didn't care.  One writer even said that that when it was the: "it" thing to complain about that and pho (or whatever ethnic food) getting popular he wrote an article like that.

Ali would've been a better Joel than Pascal to me, he gives off the rugged guy better.
Pascal has a bit of a baby face look going, and even in Mandalorian, everytime the helmet comes off, he looks very vulnerable and non-threatening, which is the opposite of the vibe Joel should give off.
