France is the best place on Earth (obviously) but :doge
For all its fault and wankery, I think France's approach to race is a lot healthier than the dystopian nightmare of the US. It's not perfect and as a foreigner, black & trans person you're bound to face some form of bigotry at one point or another. Biggest issue would probably in job searching and finding a place to live : maybe they won't tell it to your face, but housing in Paris is already hard for stable employment French-born middle class couples (singles have it worse still), it may be an uphill battle. And one you can only fight with a job.

Being American will undoubtedly make it a lot easier for gaining entry but beyond that you'll probably get a lot of shallow hot takes you never asked for & some of the contempt that we harbor only for Americans.

If you don't have a solid job lined up and/or someone that can house you for several months, I wouldn't advice it, doubly so if you don't have some of the language down already.
Canada sounds a lot more practical if only for proximity.

Plus, you know, there's a more than 0% chance that France stumbles to the far right within 15 years.

And I love Belgium but the language clusterfuck there is a severe leash on job prospects, even in Brussels.

Holland is your best bet.

Or even better, take a vacation and visit The Netherlands, Germany and France and see which country you like best.
If you come here you probably wonder why we complain about anything when we live in a green bicycle paradise with the cleanest tap water, public transportation that connects every town, beautiful architecture, art, the best EDM artists, all the modern tech, internet with no bandwidth caps and a 28 hour work week on average but that's just what we do.  :trumps

Bro.... They don't like amerikkkans either (no one does lol... Except nintex), no matter how much you try to be french. I speak French pretty dece and had a good time there but they will pick you out like a sore thumb.

Edit: nvm you are completely clueless about the histories and economies of the countries you want to move to

It's not that I don't know.

It's that I don't care. Which you don't seem to get.

Google African immigrants in France? Why don't you Google black Americans in America?

"France is racist!!!!" isn't going to sway me. What, like America isn't? Great argument. Where you want me to go? Fucking Africa and not Europe? The place where it's illegal to be trans or gay? Nah. Whatever racism France and Europe has pales to America besides Nazism. And even the Nazis got their inspiration from American racism to begin with.
for the record Cindi, despite our racist history, I have Muslim friends, white friends, Asian friends, gay friends, true I only have one irl trans friends but trans is kinda rare, Cape Town is as close as you can get to a good multicultural society in the world imo, if you move out of the city, you're kinda outa luck tho

And if you think I want to move from America just because I think x place will be better for y identity you are mistaken.

I genuinely loathe the country.

Can't wait for tonight. More excuses and more hand wringing as candidates are caucused using a sketchy app.

"we can't do that here"

The bipartisan loophole of hell

40-50 years of stagnancy

"You got shot by a cop? Have you tried not being black? It seems you had marijuana in your system. You did something, didn't you?"

Every damn day something stressful happens and nothing changes.

"There is a crisis (financial, health, loan, whatever). Better do nothing."

"I did ______ so why should they be rewarded with ______" the country

It's radical to want to healthcare.

Truly a terrible, selfish country that utterly lacks compassion towards anything or anyone. Fuck you, got mine the country.

Watch. Within the next 48 hours SOMETHING will happen to prove me correct how broken the entire thing is and Americans will bask in its brokenness. Then we will be like :salute "ain't you proud?" "That's just the way things are"

We have a media that is so bought they can't give a fair treatment to all political candidates because of conflict of interest. Everything will remind you that America truly fucking blows.

Consider this month of February. Tell me good things about America.

You've got the super bowl half time show. Latinas showing skin??! Someone please think of the children!!

Then consider the NFL itself. "yeahhhhh, we hid the effects football can have on players for decades. No, we don't care."

Iowa caucus.

"Bernie Sanders?! He's too RADICAL!!!" every damn day.

"We can't do that in America" every damn day.

"I saw Bloomberg on tv. I support him. No I don't watch the debates"

A dude is being aired out daily for his racist and sexist comments and policies. Actual mayor,"we shouldn't hold people to the mistakes they've made" in support of him.

Trump talks ending student loan forgiveness program.

"This is unlawful Mr. President so rather than face your awfulness I will politely resign so you can fill the spot with someone more accommodating."

"You're the problem. You're the person that won't give for Michael Bloomberg. We need to stop Trump!!!" despite four years ago raging about how racist and sexist Trump was.

;Etc.

A place that has no values. Only cares about winning.

Brass to tacks, America fucking blows. Tell me what's good about it. It's clearly a sinking ship.

I'm fairly sure the only reason french news media is not causing a similar amount of distress is because you can't read it. It's not "try ignoring the issue", more "you might run into the same problems".

It's not so much that you have problems with America, Cindi. It's more about that sudden decision to go with France, even though as you agree, you aren't particularly informed about it and are handwaving lots of things because it's more like you've decided and are in filling the reasons after.
I'm fairly sure the only reason french news media is not causing a similar amount of distress is because you can't read it. It's not "try ignoring the issue", more "you might run into the same problems".
Also you're in a sphere that only deals with the most sensational bullshit 24/7, how often are you talking about ANY OF THAT SHIT in normal life with random people you meet?
This was closer to what I was trying to get at by mentioning French political culture. Cindi points to the voter turnout, but isn't aware that the French Left has collapsed repeatedly including recently, the French "normal" Right has too, both in scandals (like go to prison type) and incompetence. The French keep electing Presidents they despise within a year, not at our levels but at single digit support levels. They have only a slightly less FPTP type system that pushes towards two parties and those parties are increasingly turning into races pitting one-and-done technocrats vs. nationalists. And plenty of immigrant blame to go around, especially dark skinned immigrants. Front National is close enough to an electoral power that it's dragging the "traditional" right towards its positions on immigration, "law and order", Islam, etc.

The religiosity thing was how France isn't too far removed from having straight up religion as parts of party platforms, Catholicism, mainly. In the U.S. we have religion but it's a generic-God-lovin kill the gays with abortions, wait, not abortions, type religion. Not one tied to a specific church.

Sure, the United States doesn't riot every time somebody proposes a minor change to some obscure program. But we're also a country that still has the same state from 1789 designed to disseminate our passions away from the public sphere. The French have tried like eight or nine since then and hated all of them including the Fifth Republic. (And nearly had more thanks to crisis like Algeria, etc.)

And then there's the French health care system compared to other European or single-payer ones... :teehee

Vom will totally back me up here and not at all point out that I'm exaggerating for effect.

You're exaggerating for effect. I'm not even sure what the religiosity-as-party-platform bit is. It's not really a FPTP system and while it strives at undercutting too many parties, it's never (at least for several decades) been a strict two party system.

Rotterdam would probably be a good fit, lots of diverse communities there and as a port city there's a lot of work. A smaller City such as Leiden or Delft could also work.
Delft especially has a sizable LGTBQ+ community and in Leiden there's just tons of young people.

In case of Germany, pick a city like Berlin or Frankfurt. Outside of Berlin pick West Germany instead of East Germany.
The eastern parts of the country are the more racist ones.

I remember when I went to Brussels I was shocked at the levels or homelessness, it's not quite big city in America levels but pretty bad. Had a good time there too, even if the nightlife felt a little sketch.

Brussels is a coarse city by certain aspects, feels like France a stage more advanced in decay.
Great place though, would probably live there if there was a solid enough job prospect to make it viable.

One positive is I can still learn French.

One negative is that it's still next to America.

Another positive is that it gets cold there and there's snow.

It's the ideal place but why does my heart say France? Why?! :stahp

2) you won’t learn French if you’re in Toronto.  Or anywhere outside of Quebec.

Montreal is cosmopolitan and lefty-liberal in its politics  I’ve visited the city probably a dozen times, go almost every year, and love it there to visit.  It’s very bilingual as a city, You can get by in English pretty well there, so there would be less language-culture shock in trying to get by (but maybe since I stick mostly to downtown and old Montreal as a tourist, that may color my perception).

The xenophobia in Quebec is mostly in the rest of the province, I would say, in the rural areas and maybe Quebec City.  Montreal is very diverse.

Hey Cindi, have you lived somewhere with significantly cooler weather before? It’s something that’s always on my mind because it affects my health, but make sure climate/weather aren’t an afterthought in your decision. Just offering some advice; it’s also affected my mood way more than I ever thought it could. I’m not sure how much thought people generally put into weather when moving other than “I can live with that,” so I thought I’d mention it.

Asked some photojournalist contacts what my options are immigrating to Canada. Personally chatted with a Montreal Jamaican man about the place. I'm very much interested. He's a photojournalist and gave me insight on a way in. We also talked about being black there and already have a sort of bond as we discussed the black diversity. Montreal might be good for me. It'll be tough getting in but it should be worth it. I'll see about visiting this year.

Tonight is the first time in months I've felt anything positive about America.

I truly feel that this election is a proxy civil war. It's not a civil war through violence but through finding the vision of America we truly want. If Bernie wins I'll stick around to see where it all goes for at least a year but I'll still be preparing for a potential departure. Especially since Trump and co. are already running with RUSSIA WANTS SANDERS which will be four years of Republicans calling the election not genuine.

My cynical self thinks this could lead to violence since Fox news will run with it and those types tend to fall to violent means.

So even if Bernie wins we may very well still lose. Even more reason to get out.
