Quote
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea said on Friday morning that police were still investigating whether a crime was committed. The vehicle has not been located and no arrests have been made, the department confirmed. The spokesperson said the car was not used by the NYPD.

The vehicle’s license plate matches that of another car frequently shared on social media by Hakim Gibson, a pro-NYPD activist who currently runs a “law enforcement support page.” The Ford Taurus appears to be a former police car purchased from a police auction. According to Facebook posts, Gibson recently outfitted the car with a push bumper and spotlight, joking online that other drivers had often mistaken him for a police officer.

People always wonder what the end of the world looks like and they expect some big event like you see in the movies.

But in reality it's just people loitering about, wondering what happened and slowly dying off one by one.

One officer being charged in the Breonna Taylor shooting. Not sure what the charges are yet.

edit: the charges are pretty low-level and come from firing shots into the apartment next to Taylor's.

Demonstrators had gathered at 7 p.m. at Hollywood Forever Cemetery before marching through the streets of Hollywood.

Haven't seen it posted anywhere.

I think he's saying he doesn't think he can prove the officer intended to push him so hard that he'd fall over, or that the shove was reckless enough that you'd assume something like that would have happened.

Police shouldn't be shoving people in the first place though (or forcing people to protest by killing people).

The eventuality of falling over (and hitting one's head) surely is implied in the action of pushing someone? It's not as bad directly smashing their head on the pavement, but it's the very reason why you shouldn't go around pushing people (without cause, like in this case) in the first place.

Legally they had the right to attempt to move protesters because a curfew was in effect. I definitely don't think they expected him to lose his footing like that and fall over, they probably underestimated how old he was because he's tall and the mask was covering his face. I can see why they dropped the charges even if I personally think that crowd-control units being deployed against peaceful protesters is evil. I don't think i'll ever understand what compels a cop to opt in to something like that.

What have potential jurors been asked about?

Lawyers are now questioning the first prospective juror about her answers to the questionnaire.

She is asked whether she formed an opinion over the video of Floyd's arrest - she says yes, adding, "we're just humans...he said he can't breathe".

"Would you be willing to change that opinion if you find other information out later?" the attorney asks.

She takes a deep breath and says: "Yes."

Here's a look at some of the other key questions the jury pool was asked.

What do you know - any and all details - about this case from media reports?
Have you ever talked about George Floyd’s death with your family, friends, or co-workers, or discussed it online, for example, on social media?
Did you, or someone close to you, participate in any of the demonstrations or marches against police brutality that took place in Minneapolis after George Floyd’s death? If so, did you carry a sign?
How favorable or unfavorable are you about Blue Lives Matter?

Juror One has been dismissed

After some discussions between attorneys, Juror One has been dismissed.

A nursing assistant from Mexico, she explained her initial response to receiving the pre-trial questionnaire for potential jurors was: "Why me?"

After she expressed concern about her fluency in English, Chauvin's attorney Eric Nelson asked a series of questions about her proficiency, sometimes needing to rephrase or repeat what he meant.

She also told the defence that she solicited the help of her husband and translation tools to fill out the questionnaire.

The exchange convinced the defence to dismiss the woman "primarily based on language proficiency".

Announcing the decision, Judge Cahill noted it was not really about the language.

"It was more that she's not a sophisticated juror... given that there was some concern about lack of understanding of legal terms."

Quote
Juror Two says he has not seen the Floyd video

The graphic video of George Floyd's death is in part why this case became such a talking point even outside the US. But the second prospective juror says he hasn't seen this footage.

"I don't go out of my way to watch visual things," he explains.

He adds that as the video will likely be played during the trial, he was willing to place the "importance of that duty over my personal comfort".

Defence attorney Nelson has also been pushing the juror on his answers to the pre-trial questionnaire - specifically, his apparent support for Black Lives Matter.

The prospective juror clarifies that he supports the Black Lives Matter movement but believes the Black Lives Matter organisation is "too extreme".

Prospective Juror Two has been selected as the first official member of the jury.

This current guy - old Christian very scared for his safety for being on this case and having a protest outside - no concern for his safety due to COVID.

edit:  doesn't believe in institutionalized racism - strongly agree that the police treat whites and blacks equal  - media exaggerates the problem - 'I've done some research on BLM ... I have some misgivings'.  Favourable to Blue Lives Matter.

edit: The prosecution tried to bate him into disqualifying himself, didn't work

strongly agrees that 'it's not right to second guess police officers'

Watched it today too.  Feels like any potential juror with any kind of left-lean that they don't weasel out of like, 'I support BLM but they go too far' gets striked.  Also got really angry when the defense asked the last one that if having political beliefs about defunding the police would make him feel like he's 'walking into the lion's den' by being on the jury.

I'd be really surprised if Chauvin gets more than whatever the least charge is.  And seeing the jury, I have no faith in the others getting found guilty.

The prosecution gets the same amount of peremptory challenges as the defence, so it's not like it's stacked in any side's favor. And besides, do you really think a BLM supporter can be impartial? It's hard enough for the average person to be impartial, knowing that if they don't vote to convict there's going to be riots in the street.

As an aside- I was chosen for a jury duty and was challenged by the prosecution. My friend teaches law and by pure coincidence one of the lawyers on the prosecution was at a party he invited me to, so I asked her why I was rejected and she said I looked "too liberal". Which is a polite way of saying she didn't trust that I was smart enough to vote to convict because I had shoulder-length hair.

Listening again today.  Basically, only white men answer are the ones saying that they feared for their safety upon finding out which trial it is.  Just listening to it, the language used and how answers are received also is very much geared to short, direct and succinct answers, which also selects for race and gender, where the old white people tend to give more answers in absolutes where others tend to hedge their answers.  How they describe the videos also selects for this, where the white people describe it in neutral language, mostly it seems because they are writing as if they are writing an office report instead of say talking to a friend.

Wishing to know more does not imply not knowing anything, at least for me.  Also, you do not need to know everything about a process to feel like it is flawed.

No, I believe its 9 and 15

And besides, do you really think a BLM supporter can be impartial? It's hard enough for the average person to be impartial, knowing that if they don't vote to convict there's going to be riots in the street.

Yes as far as anyone can actually be impartial.  If you are selecting by asking about BLM, you might as well be asking if they watch Fox news or voted Trump, both of which would be wrong.

'Would you hold the testimony of a police officer higher than a bystander solely due to his position of a police officer'
'No.  For me, I think would be how it's said.  It would be more like how they talk, like if they talk with conviction or more confidence'

Then prosecution asks:

'If you ask a police officer for directions and he says this way and a bystander says no its the other way

Ya it's a reasonable thing to trust police over others given the situation, it was more how it played out that was funny and watching the guy struggle to come up with an answer that doesn't discredit what he just said about being neutral about cops.
